TORCH? WHATEVER. HERE, YOU TAKE IT.

I was listening to one of the Back From the Grave series of garage compilations last night. If you're into garage bands from the sixties, you probably know there are a zillion compilations out there. The Nuggets series from Rhino, the Pebbles compilations from three different companies (fictitious names and "licensed from"s, the only real company involved was Bomp), Sundazed's Garage Beat series, some from Norton, and a whole bunch of one-offs. I like the Back From the Grave series. They're raunchier, the bands give less fucks. I never really realized until last night just how much that not giving a fuck attitude influenced which of these compilation series I preferred. I put on Back From the Grave Volumes 1 & 2 (the CD version) and after a couple songs I had to go outside. When I came back in, "The Rat's Revenge" by the Rats was playing. It had been I while since I listened to it and hearing it fresh I was struck by how the Rats really did not give a fuck. Absolutely no chart aspirations here. "Fuck it, we'll never be the Stones, let's just continue playing the steakhouse and put out a 45 just to do it." You never know, right? Completely stupid crap sometimes becomes a hit (see "Surfin' Bird"). Whatever the story is behind it (I didn't brush up) it is the attitude it projects that I dig. Alas, I couldn't find an mp3 of "Rat's Revenge". As a consolation, here's some Oblivians, from decades later. They also carried the zero fucks given torch.

BERNIE VS THE HOUSE OF CARDS

As happy as I am that Joe Biden won the election, I am and always have been a Bernie Sanders supporter. He was my choice in the primary election and the person whose positions on issues come closest to mine. Big on that list is income inequality. Sanders is for increasing taxes on the ultra-rich. I'm with that, fully in.

In the past week the stock market was hit with a massive buy of GameStop from members of a Reddit group who knew Wall Street was banking on GameStop to go out of business. Realizing that there is power in numbers, a bunch of them started buying up GameStop stock sending the market into a WTF frenzy. Now, I'm not a trader, day or otherwise, but from what I understand all sorts of rich investors are all of a sudden concerned what will happen to their games now. A bunch of Reddit users in their bedrooms and at their kitchen tables leveled the playing field. If that can happen to GameStop, what will happen to their next bet on failure?

Right about know you're thinking, "What has this got to do with music?" I knew you were going to ask that. Well today Bernie Sanders tweeted "Oh look, another billionaire is mad that he might have to pay more taxes while children in America go hungry and veterans sleep on the street. Cry me a river. Yes. We will make Wall Street billionaires pay their fair share of taxes and create an economy that works for all of us." Here here, my man!

Buried in that quote is an expression I've only heard in song and rarely heard spoken, only two people that I can think of off the top of my head. One of the people that used the phrase was Johnny Rotten back in the Sex Pistols days. During an interview, the song cane on and Rotten excitedly said the title and proclaimed "I love this song!" The second time I noticed that someone had used the term, also the title of the song, was Sanders in his tweet today. So, here's Julie London's "Cry Me A River", a total smoky lounge torch singer sort of thing. Also down there is a clip from The Girl Can't Help It, in which Tom Ewell's character comes home drunk, puts on London's record and starts hallucinating, seeing London in his living room, then his kitchen, then in the living room again and the looking ultra-sultry, lying on his bed. Anyone who's ever come home shitfaced and then tried to put on a record will relate to how those few seconds set everything up.

DID YOU GET ALL OF US?

I was just dorking around trying to think of something to post. It occurred to my that it had been some time since the Budos Band had been thrown your way. Then I looked, roughly seven years. It's about time. Their music has a certain vibe. This is smoky hazy music, for kicking back, barbecuing, reading, hot tubbing, heavy petting. It has a good beat and you can dance to it. Sorta.

These are all from their first few LPs. They later went a little more metal. I dig this vibe more. There's planty of good metal out there but not much of whatever this is. Afro-beat-Ethio-jazz-pass-the-bong.

CHECK THAT BOX

Tonight I learned that Gary Burger, from the Monks, recorded with Faust. Well, I'll be dipped in shit.  "Beware (The Transatlantic Feedback)", from a Monks tribute compilation Silver Monk Time. It's also got the Fall, the Raincoats, Jon Spencer and a bunch of other people. I didn't know it existed so, cool, another thing to look out for if it can be had on the cheap.

The other thing I learned tonight is totally unrelated. I did not know that Mountain's "Long Red" has been sampled over 600 times. The post at Melting Pot cites Eric B. & Rakim's "Eric B. Is President" as an example. I remember hearing that song when it came out and at that time it had been several years since I heard the Mountain song. Now that I think about it, until tonight it had been probably ten to fifteen years since I listened to Eric B. & Rakim. Man, I gotta start digging shit out more.

I REALLY MISS THIS LADY

This started with a nice three year old surprise, a Curtis Mayfield sound-alike that's not afraid to throw in more contemporary elements. Hard to believe it was a 2017 release. Seriously, where has this guy been hiding? A definite seventies vibe courtesy of his voice and the strings. And speaking of voice, strings and seventies soul, there's another down there from the late great Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and that one reminded me of a great video where Ms Jones absolutely tears it up. Paris, 2011, she's 55 years old, a nine minute tour de force. She goes through a litany of vintage dance moves, the boogaloo, the pony, the funky chicken, the tighten up, the jerk, and the swim. Six or so minutes into the song, Prince pops his head in, trying to show off with some completely out of place guitar licks. The momentum of the song doesn't really slow down because Jones and the Dap-Kings all but ignore him and keep on doing what they do. Boogie.

DEEP, AS RABBIT HOLES GO.

I did as promised last night, binged on mod jazz organ stuff. It's a deep pool. I'm still kind of scrounging around out back, but here's two really good ones. Graham Bond had as his drummer a young Ginger Baker (top left above). The Artwoods had a young Jon Lord (Deep Purple) as their organist. These both swing like monkeys,

NICE VIBE WHATEVER IT'S CALLED

Here's a good one, posted by the Probe way back in 2005 and, don'tcha just know it, it's still online. "Heide" by Hank Jacobs, which the Probe describes as "like Jackie Mittoo jamming with Cambodian rock band". Me? Despite a strong attraction to anything that mentions Jackie Mittoo, I'm thinking more in the vein of Mulatu Astatke, often referred to as the father of Ethio-jazz, but then again it might just be a similar smoky vibe. Listen to "Heide" and let me know what you think it is.

There's a mess of his stuff over at YouTube, "Heide" seems to be the oddball. The rest of his stuff seems to be that mod jazz organ stuff, of which I'm about to binge.

DOESN'T WORK IN DIGITAL. BUY THRASHED.

This is such a great package. The title song is a slice of good ol' fashioned American snottiness. Worth the price of a banged up copy, which is the only way to hear it. This is not a museum piece. This is something you run across with a slightly split sleeve and among the scuffs on the vinyl, what looks to be a beverage stain. Two bucks. Five bucks. Whatever, consider the lineage of ownership. Look at the cover image, iconic. This is an excellent example of a record you will run into and remember only vaguely but know that it's in your head for a reason. See it, buy it.

I had no idea what to post to match my mood. So I pulled a Coltrane LP out and put it on. Totally hit the spot. First serendipitous event in the post-45 era. It fits my mood. I think everyone is sort of in that mood. I heard "It's a new day." in conversation four different times today. It seemed to be a combination of relief and cautious hope.

GTFO

I've been waiting to wake up for four years. In November of 2016 I had the worst fucking nightmare. Under ordinary circumstances I would have gone on with my day and forgotten all about it. "It was only a dream." That always helped after other nightmares, which had sometimes found me getting arrested, falling from the sky, and being chased by a giant rolling ball of chop suey. For some reason the "only a dream" thing wouldn't work this time. So I went back to bed. I didn't sleep well. The nightmare kept reoccurring, each time worse and worse. Here's the weird part, the nightmare had so many scenarios that were so Bizarro World and beyond comprehension that I could not possibly have been thinking of them previously to seed this surreal nightmare. That's when the nightmare got even worse. The main protagonist was a simpleton, a lazy infantile blowhard. And he was everywhere. A real creep. I'm going to cut out. I've got to get a good nights sleep. This shit stops tonight.

SCIENTIST MEETS NEIGHBOR IN THE ALLEY

Oh shit, I was just reminded that I never mentioned this. Those of you who know reggae, know that when it comes to dub King Tubby was the man. You might also know that he had a protégé named Scientist. Scientist was in his early twenties when he released his first LP in 1980, and that's about the time I started listening to him. That long ago, four decades. But that's not what I forgot to mention.

There's a woman who moved in across the alley about a year ago. She's involved in the local reggae scene and was lamenting the recent loss of San Diego reggae DJ Carlos Culture. This is where we made the reggae connection. A short time later she told me about the memorial or wake or whatever it was. She mentioned some heavy hitters that were there. Then a few days later she told that she had been hanging with some of the people that were also at the wake, at one point hanging in the alley. She asked me if I knew who Scientist was, I said of course blah, blah, blah. Then she told me that Scientist was one of the people she was hanging with in the alley. My alley. I go out to that alley three or four times a day. That line from Endless Summer, "You really missed it, you should have been here yesterday." That's the story of my life.

LOCKDOWN THEATER NIGHT 41

Here's some good ol' fashioned cable access for you. Cable access was/is a channel that cable companies are supposed to provide for noncommercial broadcasting by members of the general public. Kind of a precursor to YouTube only less spontaneous. As you can imagine, the draw of free screen time in the pre-YouTube era attracted some oddballs. there was some stuff of serious merit as well.

On the previous post about Sylvain Sylvain, I linked to a video on YouTube. Some of you might have noticed that in the description at YouTube, the poster mentioned a full length video "Paul Tschinkel's Inner Tube", a compilation of clips from a public access show of the same name. The video has Johnny Thunders (acoustic), the Heartreakers (live) Sylvain, Mink DeVille, Levi and the Rockats, Jayne County, Suicide, the Contortions, 8 Eyed Spy, and the Feelies, among others I can't ID. These are from the late seventies to '81 or so. Most are live clips from small venues.

This Paul Tschinkel was prolific. His YouTube channel has a lot of other music clips, along with a lot of art oriented clips. Basquiat, Koons, Sherman, Schnabel, you get the drift. If you dig art, budget twice as much time.

RESPECT

You may have heard, Sylvain Sylvain died a couple days ago from cancer. He was a co-founder of the New York Dolls, the rhythm guitarist and the guy who came up with the name. His band-mate Johnny Thunders gets a lot of credit, rightfully so, for his swagger if nothing else. David Johansen was a good front man and is recognized as such. But. There's a but. Now, I've never read a long detailed bio of the Dolls so this is just an educated guess. I kinda think Sylvain is due a lot more credit for his contribution. I was never enthralled with his post-Dolls stuff (though I really never gave it a chance), but he brought the Dolls together, wrote songs and played guitar with them. He's always had my respect just for that.

THE EVER EXPANDING GENRE OF WHAT?

You know you got it bad when you see the band name Hallelujah Chicken Run Band and it seems familiar. I don't know where I saw it before but I don't think it was the hosting site. I knew they were African, but that's about it. After hearing this song I did remember that my first impression, whenever it was, was that they didn't fit into any distinct African sub-category, Cool.

The hosting blog says it's an "exciting form of afrorock called chimurenga." Another blog says "Fusing traditional Shona music with Congolese rumba and Zimbabwean rock." Huh? I guess I ain't got it that bad.

CARD CARRYING DUES PAYER

These days practically nothing seems all that shocking musically. I mean, really, just about everything radical that could be done, has been done. When was the last time you heard something and thought "Whoa! What the fuck is that?"?. To put things into perspective, let's set the Wayback Machine to the fall of 1977. The chart-toppers are Debby Boone (Pat Boone's daughter), KC and the Sunshine Band, Carly Simon, Shaun Cassidy, a disco version of the Star Wars theme, and "Boogie Nights" by Heatwave. You might understand how red blooded rockers were just waiting for things to change. Some already had a project in the works. The Sex Pistols did.

I'd heard about the Sex Pistols, knew what they looked like and had an idea of what they were about but had not heard them. When I finally did hear them I wondered where all the comparisons to the Ramones came from. This was not "Beat on the Brat" nonsense. The Sex Pistols raged. Like a pressure cooker that finally popped a lid. They shook shit up.

Yesterday (or the day before?) it was reported that there will be a TV series about the Sex Pistols on FX to be directed by Danny Boyle (the guy who did the film Yesterday). The part I like about it is that it's based on guitarist Steve Jones' book, Lonely Boy: Tales From A Sex Pistol. (Jones, above.) The book is a good read. I've read a shitload of accounts of early UK punk over the years, including two memoirs by John Lydon (né Johnny Rotten). Jones's tale can seem almost Forest Gump-like in his uncanny string of being in the right place at the right time. But he and drummer Paul Cook struggled long before the Pistols got off the ground. Dude was a classic petty thief.

Though he's done his share of rock star skirt chasing and had plenty of success over the years, you get the feeling that Jones knows the bottom could drop out at any moment. Reading his take on the Pistols saga makes you feel like you're having a beer with him. Lydon's memoirs, on the other hand, read like a guy who's full of himself, self important and ego driven. Not to say his books aren't good. They just seem self aggrandizing. Jone's book seems more honest. Now that I know that Lydon is (was?) a Trump supporter, it all makes sense. Blowhards attract. I love it that it probably pisses him off to no end that Jones got the deal. Tee-hee. Oh well, he can always go start a band with his Trump bro Ted Nugent.

DISREGARD TITLE.

Okay, I'd been going back and forth about posting this one. I didn't want to seem like I was taking Wednesday's shit show at the Capitol lightly, but once Jeri Jorden's "Riots" popped into my head, it would not leave. The invasion of the Capitol was less a riot than an invasion. I'm still shaking my head. It's just fucking unbelievable that there were that many people gullible enough to actually believe that the election was rigged, especially considering the source of their information. Someone who has lied consistently for the last four years. (The Washington Post kept a running tally but stopped counting on November 5 at 29,508 misleading claims or lies since he was elected,)

After thinking about it, I figured that you deserved the song and if I didn't post it, then the Trump idiots have won. Fuck them, fuck him. You need to hear the sax in this song. It's major league squonk. As far as sax is concerned, the closest contender in the dissonance sweepstakes is Lara Logic's solo in X-Ray Spex's "Oh Bondage, Up Yours". So here's both...oh, and fuck Donald Trump.

AJAX ROCK

Being away from TV today I'm a little preoccupied with getting caught up on just what the fuck happened  in Washington. I'm cutting it short. I gotta say though, I don't shock easy but every little detail I happened to catch was...man, it was just a completely surreal shit show. I'm gonna leave it at that. For some reason when I was just hearing the magnitude of the chaos, this song started going off in my head. It's got a little bit of pissed off in it. A nice Sonics-type crunch. They're just banging the shit out of their instruments, particularly the drummer. I've posted it in the past, but I forgot that it was the very first song I posted here. Which means absolutely nothing.

IT'S PARTISAN SOMEWHERE

I just realized, the Beatles vs Stones debate probably doesn't happen anymore. If you're of a certain age, you're thinking "Beatles vs Stones debate? What the hell is that?" Back in the day, it was a thing. You were a Beatles fiend or a Rolling Stones fiend. It was a binary choice. They. Could. Not. Be. Tied. Everybody had to take a stand. If you didn't, you were a music plebeian. I'm sure there were couples where it was a big enough deal that a marriage might not move forward if one didn't relent.

Last week I ran across some Exile on Main St.-era Stones videos (1972). Playing live in a studio, a sound-stage or something. Pretty clean footage, and nice to see them in a controlled environment, live without the distraction of an audience. Then last night I ran into a great Beatles related video. Peter Jackson, the guy who made the Lord of the Rings movies, got a hold of fifty something hours of Beatles footage, from when they were making Let It Be. The clip was about six minutes, including a introduction by Jackson. It's a teaser for a documentary he's making from the footage, now apparently delayed due to the pandemic. The footage is from roughly 1969, presented as sort of a montage, some synced to the backing track, them rehearsing "Get Back". It's excellent. There's a link down there with Paul McCartney raving to Howard Stern about how good the footage is.

TO EARNESTNESS!

Boy, after the year that was 2020, this was nice to run across. It's not the latest hot shot band, a rare record, or some ridiculous trivial backstory of a song.  It was a short video that did what seemed impossible. It reminded me that life goes on, the wheels still move, and there is hope for the younger generations. It's like this: As you get older, you get jaded. Been there, done that and that sort of thing. You forget what life was like when you were younger and all the melarchy streaming out of the six o'clock news was stuff that was happening to other people.

I'm not sure how many of you have been hanging around here for over five years, but in the event that you haven't, let me introduce you to Kara, a guitar student I don't know. Five years ago I was posting Freddy King's "San-Ho-Zay", and ran into a cover by Kara who was, at the time, roughly ten years old. It was posted on YouTube by her guitar teacher, Michael Stevens. I was struck by the innocence of someone in the position I was when I took guitar lessons at about the same age. (I ultimately walked away from lessons, but my brother continued with them and would end up being an hot shit guitarist by the time he left high school.) I hoped that she kept up with it because she showed promise, and the song selection was an excellent one. Intrigued, I contacted Stevens and he filled in the blanks, telling me that he posted videos of his students to help them with poise, as many of them had never played in front of anyone outside of their households.

Over the ensuing years Stevens hepped me to new videos showing Kara's progress. The first few were blues songs and she had a pretty good feel for them. A couple other Freddy King songs, "Hideaway" and "The Stumble" and Albert King's "Born Under A Bad Sign". During the next few years the videos were of more recent songs, more acoustic guitar. The latest video that Stevens shared was Kara playing Radiohead's "Karma Police". It seemed recent to me. Wow, it came out in 1997. Time flies.

Anyway, it was a nice way to start the new year. Something encouraging. Stevens is still teaching and Kara's still taking lessons. As I've come to know Stevens, as little as I do, I know three things. He teaches guitar, he likes to cook, and he's a Ritchie Blackmore fiend. I wonder when that conversation will come up?

WELL, IT IS A FENDER.

What a waste of a day off. Everything is closed and you can't hang out with anybody. Fuggit. I started re-reading another book, Surf Beat: Rock 'n' Roll's Forgotten Revolution, by Kent Crowley. It's a pretty thorough history of surf music, the best on the subject that I've yet read (albeit two). I'm only fifty or so pages into it and I'm already reminded of the questions I had the last time I read it. I'm still wondering why no one has written a full length biography of Dick Dale. What the hell? I'm also wondering why Eddie and the Showmen's work is out of print. And the big question, why don't recordings exist of Kathy Marshall, the Queen of the Surf Guitar? [Note: These and other questions just turned into a two hour surf music related detour. Thus, the short end to this post. I can't stay in front of a screen all night. I gotta get back to doing nothing.]

Anyway, the book mentions an early instrumental by Ritchie Valens, "Fast Freight" as being right on the cusp of early rock 'n' roll splitting off into surf. It was released under the name Arvee Allens. Del-Fi Records label owner Bob Keane was creating a back up plan in a Duane Eddy mold, in the event that his first two vocal hits were flukes.
