GAL COSTA, REST IN PEACE

On the way home tonight I heard that Gal Costa died yesterday. I really love her music. Every thing below was posted back in June and it's not about her in particular but there's a few of her songs. Given the circumstances I've no reservations about re-posting it. Plus I'm lazy.

I have a new next door neighbor, a Brazilian. There's a lot of Brazilians in my neighborhood. Let me tell you, they know how to have a good time. Several years ago when there were other Brazilians living in my complex, it was when Brazil won the World Cup. They went absolutely ape shit. I put on some Brazilian music as a soundtrack to the spectacle in the courtyard and they barged in my apartment and were jumping up and down on my couch. That vision had me hearing music in my head the for last 24 hours. Os Mutantes, bossa nova, Gal Costa, the whole damn Gilberto family, all the Brazilian stuff I was familiar with. Then, on the way home from the beach today I walked by a house that had bossa nova playing, floating out the screen door. That settled it. When I got home I went looking for some bossa nova that I didn't have, something new to me. I found it, a great mix, but shit. Turns out the first hour of the mix was bossa nova and the second hour was anything goes including douchebags. It's indelibly tainted, it includes a song by Mike Love, king of all popular music douchebags. I cannot, in good conscience, pass that on. I feel tainted just mentioning his name. Here's some Brazil (Brasil to natives) related stuff. Some of you crazy leather wearing nuts might think it too laid back. Loosen the hell up. The rest of you, here's the skinny. Network Awesome's collection of Tropicalia related videos is what instigated all this. It does kind of skip around a bit, so if you want the story of the Brazilian Tropicalist movement, check out Brazil - The Tropicalist Revolution at YouTube. There's also a link to a post with a bunch of Gal Costa's stuff down there. She was a singer in the movement. Good stuff. Then there's another link too the top eleven bossa nova songs, put together by someone who knows a lot more than me on the subject. I'll take his word for it. There's another link to a compilation of bossa nova in spanish. Not that it matters here. Spanish, Portuguese, I don't care. This is a good mix, all light and airy n' shit. I can't figure out how to download all of the songs, so pipe in if you can, or you can just stream it. THE ORIGINAL BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT

Here are a couple from a long lost Os Mutantes LP, recorded in France some forty years ago. Unreleased at the time because it wasn't commercial enough, it was released in 2000, and Aquarium Drunkard just posted a couple of the cuts. I'm not sure if they're one of those sites that disables direct linking to mp3s, but if they are, you know the drill (go there to get them). ANOTHER DAMN GRAB BAG

Here's some unrelated stuff that I could probably tie together if I tried, but it's easier to just call it what it is: unrelated stuff that I don't feel tying together. In other words, more stuff from the junk drawer.

The first one is a video I came across. Usually these sort of after market home edited video specials blow, but this one is good. The audio is the Groupies' "Primitive" (the one the Cramps covered), and the visual is an old clip of burlesque stripper Blaze Starr. The fit together really well. Is it safe for work? You should just turn it all the way up, lean back in your chair, go full screen on your bad self, and find out.

I couldn't find an mp3 of the Cramps cover, but in the hunt for it, ran into a bounty of Southern Culture On The Skids live stuff, including a cover of "Primitive." There's 40 shows of theirs at the link below, which begs the question: are Southern Culture on the Skids shows some sort of Deadhead rehab? I spot checked a few and some are entirely listenable. I'll let you figure out which ones are up to your particular snuff.

Next up is a totally unrelated (I can't emphasize that enough) song I just had to post. It's unfortunate that the mp3 shows the name of the band and the song, because it would be better if you didn't know anything about the origin. It takes all sorts, and in the case of this little ditty, I have to admire their over-the-top-ness. It's grind core, death metal, or something-or-other core. I'll call it "Beavis and Butthead meet the Tazmanian Devil core" because that's what it sounds like. Just listen to it, and see if it doesn't bring a "stoners let loose in Guitar Center" smile to your face. What makes it more amusing is that it's labeled as a demo, which means they were presumably recording it to get it down before going into the studio, or an even funnier possibility, to try and get signed.

Then, down there at the bottom are a couple Os Mutantes songs that were posted on Aquarium Drunkard. Just throwing them down there as a palate cleanser. Aquarium Drunkard is another one of the fine blogs that I always seem to end up at, and worth bookmarking.

Left of center? Check. From another country? Check. Mellow? Wait,...what? Ah, what the hell, I can do mellow two days in a row. "Unprecedented: day two of mellow." (Enjoy it while you can.)

What is this? Brazillian tropicalia-psych-pop? I guess. Probably need a few more hyphens to accurately describe Os Mutantes. Everybody tries to, I don't really care. It just sounds good. In Wax Poetics, head Mutante Sergio Diaz cited Rubber Soul, Revolver, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Duane Eddy, Les Paul, Sly & the Family Stone, Jimmy Smith, Nat King Cole, the Everlys, and the Ventures, along with some Brazillian names (you probably wouldn't recognize anyways) as influences. But that doesn't really narrow it down, does it?

They have a new album out. It's quite a big deal to a lot of folks, because it's their first in over thirty years. Seriously, hipsters of all ages are gonna be drooling all over this one, especially on vinyl. It's that kind of record. Good thing they recently reissued their back catalog too, because that's what level two hipsters will jump for. But it's good. Left of center and, albeit mellow, just weird enough to plug a few mix holes.
