DEEP, AS RABBIT HOLES GO.

I did as promised last night, binged on mod jazz organ stuff. It's a deep pool. I'm still kind of scrounging around out back, but here's two really good ones. Graham Bond had as his drummer a young Ginger Baker (top left above). The Artwoods had a young Jon Lord (Deep Purple) as their organist. These both swing like monkeys,

IT IS DYNAMIC AND EXCITING

I don't know. You can call the Graham Bond Organization anything. Lump them in with jazz, R & B, blues, I don't care. Whatever it is, after revisiting mod shit earlier today, it really hit the spot. This stuff was hip amongst a certain set in England in the mid-sixties, but it sure wasn't here in the U.S. I think the jazz part of it scared off the kids, or maybe it was an abundance of organ or, in some cases, the absence of guitar. Whatever it was, it was our loss. Just check out these two. Graham Bond Organization's "Wade in the Water" just completely swings. Two and a half minutes of organ and sax head butting. Listen to the drums. That's Ginger Baker right there, going off as per usual. The other song, the Artwoods "Walk On the Wild Side" is slower and longer, but of similar vintage and the same general scene. Substituting guitar for sax, it features a pre-Deep Purple Jon Lord on organ.

IT'S RECORD STORE DAY SOMEWHERE

You may have heard Jon Lord's early band, the Artwoods. I had not. As strange as it now seems, I'd never heard of them before his recent passing. Now I'm hooked. There's a lot of stuff going on, a mix of rave-up guitar, Hammond grooves, fuzz, and a dash of garage. I feel like an idiot for not knowing them earlier. Here's links to two posts, each with a couple of their cuts. You should definitely check out the post at Aquarium Drunkard, an edition of Clifton's Corner packed with good shit by others too.

Because tomorrow's Record Store Day (or today is depending oon where you are), there's some record store videos below too. Totally unrelated to the Artwoods. I'm just too lazy to do two posts.
