IT STARTED OUT BACK BY THE DUMPSTER

Yeah, so yesterday's post was thrown together quickly. My friends were coming over and I didn't want to sacrifice hanging out to sit in front of a computer. It turned out that the friends brought one of their friends, a guy from the Midwest that I'd never met. As often happens with these friends, talked turned to music. First it was chit chat about Thundercat (who my friend's son had turned them onto) and after I mentioned that I'd read that Thundercat was, for a few years, the bassist of Suicidal Tendencies, the talk turned to other types of music. All of a sudden, I forget the exact seque, the Midwest friend and I were talking Dirtbombs, then Mick Collins, the Gories, and by that point we were off the rails. Ty Seagull, King Khan and so on. It was great, it had been a while. One of those excitable music related volleys. Like I used to have with my brothers, lucky enough back then to get a fix daily. Good times.

WGASA NIGHT SPECIAL

Don't know wgasa? The story goes like this. The San Diego Zoological Society already had the "World Famous" San Diego Zoo (it is a good zoo) and were getting ready to either open, or add an attraction to, the San Diego Wild Animal Park (now called Safari Park"), which isn't in San Diego proper but about thirty miles North. The attraction was a tram that would zip you around the park which was like a zoo but with way more open space to give the illusion of natural habitats. Anyway, according to the story, prior to the debut, the suits were having meetings, decisions had to be made. One of the things that had yet to be decided: they had to think of a name for this tram. Someone, bold and bored, said, "Who Gives A Shit Anyway?" There you have it. WGASA. That's what tonight is. I'll just post some random crap, because this Jeff the Brotherhood video has me more interested in a fuckin' summertime nature party. Good times. Who gives a shit anyway?

WHERE YOU BEEN?

I hadn't thought about these guys in a while but I ran into a mention of them today. I had to hear one, did a random search and found one, at the Urban Outfitters site of all places. Where, over there I'm not sure. But it hit the spot for a quick fix.

KING OF SOMETHING

I like the type of band that has horns and keyboards. A complete band. Not that other set-ups don't work, but when you add keyboards (think the Faces), or horns (say, Rocket From the Crypt) it makes that sound all that bigger. When you have both (Exile on Main St. era Stones) it's like having overdubs at your disposal. To pull that off, and maintain some sort of edge, is not and easy thing to do. Chicago? No. Blood, Sweat and Tears? No. King Khan and the Shrines? Yes. that's over simplifying things, comparing apples and oranges. I don't care. The point is that Khan and his mob do it well.

I'd never seen the live clip posted below, and that's what I'm digging on right now. A  49 minute set. Check the intro, sounding not too far from Jerry Dammers' Spatial AKA Orchestra. And then Khan comes out and it turns into a full on rock 'n' soul throw down. Is Khan the real thing? C'mon, let's not over analyze things, who the fuck cares? It's that kind of music. It that sense, he's very much the real thing.

YOU WANT MORE?

There's so many reasons why Halloween is a hoot. When you're young, it's all the candy, and as you get older, that's augmented by hijinks, toilet papering, egging and so on. Then, oh yeah, the late teens, time to hit the keg parties and check out who shows up in sleazy costumes only to be gaped at by others that just matched a cowboy hat with a bandana and a flannel shirt they wear everyday anyways. Then, when official drinking age is reached, things really start rolling. It's all about bars, clubs and more parties, and the big ol' everyone's going Halloween blowout in a rented hotel ballroom. There's quite a few years in this mode, believe me.. Once that becomes ho-hum, it's back to house parties, not as warm-ups, but as the main event. That's where mixes come in handy. So if that's where you find yourself, here's some more last minute mixes, really good ones, courtesy of Grey Haas. To start things off, there's three other songs by King Khan and the BBQ Show, a Sonic Youth cover by Mudhoney, and my new favorite theremin slinger, Lydia Kavina. Spooky, that one, hard to believe it's played live.

GIVE 'EM CANDY CIGARETTES

Oh hell yeah. King Khan and the BBQ Show's "Zombie" would be good enough for the night, but this post at Indie Rock Cafe [sic] has a few others worth hearing. There had to be something good, because there's fifty songs. You might find some that you like more than others. I picked the ones below because they all have some neat guitar, and at least they have some umph. Halloween music has to have some of that, or at least sound spooky or creepy. Some of the songs in the post are are all lah-de-dah with acoustic guitars, hand claps, and other such off topic nonsense. You know what scared me most about the post? Clicking on the Budos Band song and hearing the first few bars. Immediately thinking, "Oh holy shit, I had no idea they'd gotten so sucky". When I came to, I realized that it was just that their link was dead, so the player automatically advanced to Belle and Sebastian. An't no ghoul got time for that.

WELL, LOOK WHO'S BACK

Ladies, single file. King Khan is back. After six years of getting his personal shit taken care of, he's got a new LP coming out at the end of summer. What's that you say? I know, new releases don't generally create excitement here, but this guy is one of the trusty goofballs that keep things interesting. How, you might ask? There's the music that, even if you knew nothing about him, speaks for itself. As good as his music is (and believe me, it passes muster here) there is the Lou Reed Incident. Quick back story: Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson had invited Khan and Co. to play at the Sydney Opera House. Reed and Anderson liked their set, and invited them to their rehearsal the next day.  Khan was sitting next to Reed after Reed had just finished singing a song (continued below video).



From an excellent interview at Rollo and Grady, here's the exciting conclusion, in Khan's words: "I looked at Lou, who was sitting right next to me, and I said, “Lou, that song was really great, but you got something on your sweater.” He looks down and I totally flick his nose, like, “Bam.” He looks up at me. I guess he couldn’t believe that I did that. I was like, “Gotcha.” [Laughs] His face! It was like an ancient turtle was bitten by a fucking mosquito or something like that. He just looked at me and said, “Please. Don’t ever do that again.”. Admit it, you want to party with this guy. Here's two of the new ones and assorted shake from a previous post.

GOING TO THE STORE?


Boy, this is a mixed bunch, with only the loosest of threads. I was puttin' around town today listening to an old mix that I made that had the Flamin' Groovies, the Blues Explosion and a few other bands that got me all riled up and wishing I was having one of those good ol' "Really, they said I was having a party tonight?" type impromptu what-the-hell, if you can't beat 'em join 'em type Saturday night throwdowns, just like the good old days. Problem is, that ol' gang of mine has, literally, moved on. Time was, there was a steady stream of drop-ins on just about every weekend night (and some during the week) that would give cause to hiding a few beers in the vegetable drawer. People get married, move away, buy homes where they can afford them, and start families. Not me. Just like John Milner said in the movie American Grafitti, "I'm staying right here, having fun, as usual." It is what it is, to use a phrase I hate to use. We all grow up in different ways and I suppose. now that I'm a little older, my way is leaving beer right out in the open. So I guess this is for the "Do you have a paper plate?' "Who pissed on the seat?" "Is that the last one?" "He's upstairs" "Can I play this?" friends. They know who they are. I have carpet stains named after some of you, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Love you more because of it. XO you loiterers.

THE RETURN OF KING KHAN


I was sucked in big time today, at Rollo & Grady. They just posted an interview with King Khan, and I like Khan. Though, at times I've felt like a rubber neck, because the guy has been so close to nuts. Turns out he did have issues, and they eventually came to a head. After a series of tumultuous events, he checked himself in. You can read all the details at Rollo & Grady, including his road back. Among other recent events, an encounter with Lou Reed. You are not going to believe this: Khan nose-thwacked Lou Reed. On purpose. As in, "What's that spot on your shirt?" thwacking. And he lived to tell the story. This is big folks. Bigger than the Pete Townsend/Abbie Hoffman incident, or Dylan going electric at Newport. Pet Sounds? Mince meat compared to this. Someone nose-thwacked Lou Reed. Damn, does that have a nice ring to it.
Rock n' roll is alive.

A KING KHAN PRIMER: DUDE'S A NUT


I don't know what to make of King Khan and I don't have to. All I need to know is his batting average, in terms of how often I dig a random download of his. That would be a long winded way of saying he's pretty much batting a thousand. A little suspect, I would agree (so don't bother saying it). But, I have to add that I picked up a used CD of his, and it's pretty damn good, beginning to end. Dare I say it, but I haven't heard a anything he's done that I don't like. Not bad for a Canadian (I'm kidding, maple leafers!).
.
So what's he sound like? Jeez, let's see, a little garage, a little psych, a lot of rock n' roll, a little bit o' horns, some tamborine and farfisa, and an ounce of ballad. Oh, and not entirely retro. Confused? You don't have to know what to make of him either. Just dig the vastly under-rated boss sounds of the guy with the Bollywood looks and the Pabst beer gut.
