NATIONAL [PREFERRED TERM] MONTH, PT 4

Here's a few oddballs that had been posted at Musica del Alma. That's past tense because the songs are still online but the blog itself is MIA. So the actual song links are good, but I left the source post links just in case it's a technical issue and Musica del Alma, the blog, reappears.

Musica del Alma specialized in Latin music in all its variations. Here's some I still had links to. The first two are covers. Sunny and the Sunliners doing the Meters' "Cissy Strut" and then a Fela cover from Phirpo y sus Caribes from Colombia. Go figure. "La Locuro de los Hippies" ("The Madness of Hippies") is an oddball fuzzfest for the ages. As if the title alone wasn't all time. Do dig the relentless tambourine bashing.

THE WAR ON CASUAL

A chance click on a old post and I'm gone. Sunny Ozuna, Sunny and the Sunliners. Fuck yeah, been a while. I'm not going to ruin the hunt for you. Here's a couple from their funky era. They did all sorts of stuff, but these are the two that set me off tonight, particularly the drums in the instrumental break in the middle of "Get Down" at about 1:25. Go browse YouTube. Pick a Sunny and the Sunliners song and, before listening to it, try to guess what the music will be like, based solely on the title.

It's Sunny Ozuna Hour over here. Pop one. It's that kinda music. I'd say there really isn't anything that needs to be said, but that would be a cop out. I'm just not in the mood for gabbing. There's a lot to be said. For now, just guzzle these.

COLOMBIAN FELA COVER. REALLY.

This is how things happen around here (again). Yesterday I was ran into a link to a cover of the Meters' "Sissy Strut." If you know the Meters, you know the song. It's been covered a lot. (Must've been the go-to cover back in the 70's.) The particular version I clicked on was done by Sunny & the Sunliners, a band that I was getting a fairly giddy about a few weeks ago. Needless to say, "Cissy Strut" + Sunny and the Sunliners = Get outta my way! Boy, was I lucky that the clicking finger had a light touch; because the host blog, Musica del Alma, is a really good one. I intend to be lurking around over there with regularity. Check it out. My spot check revealed some consistently good stuff. After just a quick look around, I found another neat cover, of Fela's "Let's Start," by a Colombian band called Phirpo y sus Caribes. Too good not to share. If I was you I'd just bookmark that site.

HIP HUGGIN' MINI (SLIGHT RETURN)

Here's just a quick one. I've posted another version, but was jazzed to find this one. It's "Hip Huggin' Mini," with the previously posted version (just a couple days ago) by Sunny and the Sunliners. This just found version is by Tender Joe Richardson (awesome name, right?). Way cool. Check out the hosting blog, the accurately titled 45 Blog. There's a lot of really good stuff there, most obscure with just a few kinda corny. The stag humor discs are a nice touch.

THE DIG NEVER ENDS

This is how things happen around here. I was so taken with Sunny and the Sunliners' "No One Else Will Do" (posted yesterday) that I thought I'd do some digging. I knew the band's name, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember from where. After I heard the cover of Little Willie John's "Talk To Me" by his earlier band, Sunny and the Sunglows, it came to me. Radio DJ Dick "Huggy Boy" Hugg used to play it all the time, back when he was on XPRS (the station that inspired the Blasters' "Border Radio"). So, if you were around Southern California and listened to Huggy Boy in the early eighties, you'll realize why the original version by Little Willie John never seemed to be the familiar one. (If you're not into ballads, read on.)

Sunny Ozuna, was the leader of both bands, as well as a solo artist. (Today he fronts Sunny Ozuna and the Skyliner Band.) The evolution of his music went from the balladry of "Smile Now, Cry Later" and "Talk To Me," to the swinging Latin soul of' "No One Else Will Do" and "Hip Huggin' Mini," with a detour doing a load of Tex Mex stuff. Somewhere in there, the Sunliners also served as backing band for the early Archie Bell and the Drells. After all of that, they got downright funky (as evidenced by "Get Down" below.) Yesterday I didn't know shit about Sunny Ozuna. Today he's on my "further listening" list. That's how things happen around here.

WORTHY CLICK ALERT

You know how it is. Sometimes you get so hell bent on getting things done that you forget to let yourself wander. And you probably know what a relief it is when you just succumb to goofing off. Then you will understand that instead of the usual half assed cornucopia of mp3 links, videos and the like; today I am just going to strongly recommend a blog that has a ton of good stuff, Nitro-Retro. A whole mess of soul, funk, international, beat, and mod type stuff, and the majority of it relatively obscure and really good, worthy of an entirely random click. The first three below were found on two back to back posts from September 2010. That should give you an indication of how much stuff is on there. The fourth song below is the original version of "Ramblin' Rose," the song the MC5 covered. All four, grade A stuff. Really, you should just budget a couple hours, go there and get lost. I did, and it felt good.
