PASSING THE TORCH LIKE A HOT POTATO

Here's a good juxtaposition. Robert Johnson's "Preachin' Blues" covered by the Gun Club as "Preaching the Blues". The Gun Club (above) were an L.A. band made up of off-duty members of the punk scene. They rip the shit out of the song. (Before anybody gets a fact checker hard on, I know Johnson didn't write it and I'm not even sure his version was the first.) After hearing the Gun Club I got distracted and when I get distracted, I relish it as an excuse to bale. So, wrapping things up, as a chaser there's Beehive and the Barracudas' cover of the Gun Club's "Sex Beat".

WHEN 1980 WAS "LATE"

Bob Biggs, the guy behind Slash Records, died a few days ago. He came aboard in the waning days of Slash, the magazine, and funded Slash Records, taking over that avenue when the magazine folded. I hadn't reviewed the Slash discography in a while and was surprised when I took a look. Everybody into punk rock will remember Slash as the label that put out the seminal first LPs by the Germs and X. I had forgotten that the Slash discography also included the first Dream Syndicate LP, the first Gun Club LP, Rank and File, the Blasters and Los Lobos. Each of those bands was significant, in a big way. The label also had the Violent Femmes, L7, and Faith No More. Reading further I realized that I had probably never read through the entire discography. If I had I would have definitely remembered that Slash put out two Burning Spear LPs. That I did not know.

Here's just three songs. There are more by the other bands mentioned above elsewhere on other posts here. Just use the search box (at the top left above the mast head) or the tags to the right. I'm not going to cut and paste links all night.

MAKE THAT THREE.

Most of you know who Robert Johnson is and some of you know exactly how many known photos of him there are. I hadn't checked in a while, but I know the last time I did, probably about twenty years ago, there were two. Now there are three. And that's big news. It was recently posted online, as in the last day or two, and is from the cover of a book about him by his sister. She had the photo with others in a cedar chest for years. The whole story about it is at Vanity Fair.

For those of you who don't know shit, Johnson was a blues man, had a short life, highly influential, sold his soul to the devil, blah, blah, blah. There's tons of shit elsewhere. There's a couple songs down there and a couple covers (the Stones and the Gun Club) but the real reason is just to hep you to photo #3.

HAVE THEM HANKIES AT READY

Here's a couple semi-tearjerkers, Kris Kristofferson's version of "For the Good Times" (made a hit by crossover geezer Ray Price), and one of the last Gun Club songs recorded before Jefferey Lee Pierce went solo. Both are at For the Sake of the Song where there's always a lot of interesting stuff that you don't see anywhere else.

L.A. BLUES (SLIGHT RETURN)

I happen to have just read a blurb in a book about the Gun Club and so I started listening to them again tonight, and now you're stuck with them again. I gotta say, their stuff has aged well. If you've heard them before (and if you hang around here it's likely you have) you know what era they're from. But if you haven't, it might be hard to peg when this stuff was recorded. These are punk scene satellites and their version of roots. Pretty effective if you ask me.

COMMENCE GOOFING OFF

I've no clue what you listen to while you get stuff done or why. I try not to think too much about what I listen to on those occasions. I don't want those associations to stick. I can tell you what I won't play while I get shit done. The Cramps, Pussy Galore or Gun Club. They're reserved for leisure. Nights that I know full well shit ain't getting done. Do the dishes later. Let's Party.

Pussy Galore - Renegade at Recidivism Go there to get it. Scroll down a bit, it's there.
Pussy Galore  - Exile on Main St. at Xtrmntr A cover of the whole LP. I've seen it referred to as a train wreck, and that's about as accurate as it gets. Any band that audacious was someone to watch.
Gun Club - Fire of Love (LP) (streaming) at YouTube You can find lots of live videos at YouTube, but if you haven't heard them, start with this, their first LP.

COP OUT NIGHT

There's a two parter over at Adios Lounge, two long parts, about the Gun Club. I haven't read it because I don't want to get sucked in, not tonight, But it's worth a bookmark to read later. The stuff over there is usually worth reading. So I'm gonna duck out. Here's just a taste. The meat is over there.

L.A.BLUES

I don't have the slightest idea what it would be like hearing the Gun Club for the first time. I've heard them so regularly over the years I can't imagine what they would sound like out of context, so if you're not familiar with them, I'm not sure I want to ruin it for you. Imagine, if you will, the Stones without Jagger, with Keith in charge and untempered. Except they're an American band from Los Angeles, interpreting the blues in a much different way, and sound nothing like the Stones. You'll either dig them, or maybe think they're complete shit. I don't care. Much has been written about them and I don't feel like writing much, so I'm buggin' out early. If you feel like what reading what I wrote about Jefferey Lee Pierce a few years ago, you can check this post. If you already know them and haven't seen the documentary, Ghost On the Highway, there you go. It can be slow moving, but I've seen worse. I'm a wild man. I bent my spoon eating hard ice cream.

FOR THE LOVE OF DIRT

The Japandroids covering the Gun Club? Neneh Cherry covering the Stooges? Found on the NPR site? What the hell is going on here? Is this Bizarro World? This reminds me of the time I saw a photograph of a cheap stereo in a Sears catalog with the New York Dolls' Too Much Too Soon LP leaned up against it. (It was about 1980, several years after the album came out, so I figured that some hipster had infiltrated.) Yeah, I know, NPR is really okay, but still, Stooges and Gun Club? Who would have guessed way back when? I kind of like the idea of some old fogeys giving these things a listen after watching Masterpiece Theater. (Oh shit, I just realized I missed the Early Bird special.)

The Japandroids new LP has a cover of the Gun Club's "For the Love of Ivy," which is pretty faithful to the original. Nothing earth shattering by any means, but nice of them to tip their hats. The Neneh Cherry cover of the Stooges "Dirt" though, is something I'll probably shell out for at some point. It's on her latest LP, The Cherry Thing, with jazz combo The Thing. They do a bunch of other covers too, among them Suicide's "Dream Baby Dream." Those two from The Cherry Thing deserve a listen, so I'm not waiting until online downloads present themselves.

Note: After consulting Wikipedia (I know), I realize that this is just a loose Seinfeld type interpretation of Bizarro World, but I left that line in so I could hep you to the Bizarro Code: "Us do opposite of all Earthly things! Us hate beauty! Us love ugliness! Is big crime to make anything perfect on Bizarro World!" (I want to party with these guys.) I kind of scanned the rest of the Wiki page, and I gotta tell you, the more I read about Bizarro World, the closer I am to packing my bags. If you're not hooked by the second paragraph, you don't have enough weird in you.

GOING TO THE STORE?

Boy, this is a mixed bunch, with only the loosest of threads. I was puttin' around town today listening to an old mix that I made that had the Flamin' Groovies, the Blues Explosion and a few other bands that got me all riled up and wishing I was having one of those good ol' "Really, they said I was having a party tonight?" type impromptu what-the-hell, if you can't beat 'em join 'em type Saturday night throwdowns, just like the good old days. Problem is, that ol' gang of mine has, literally, moved on. Time was, there was a steady stream of drop-ins on just about every weekend night (and some during the week) that would give cause to hiding a few beers in the vegetable drawer. People get married, move away, buy homes where they can afford them, and start families. Not me. Just like John Milner said in the movie American Grafitti, "I'm staying right here, having fun, as usual." It is what it is, to use a phrase I hate to use. We all grow up in different ways and I suppose. now that I'm a little older, my way is leaving beer right out in the open. So I guess this is for the "Do you have a paper plate?' "Who pissed on the seat?" "Is that the last one?" "He's upstairs" "Can I play this?" friends. They know who they are. I have carpet stains named after some of you, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Love you more because of it. XO you loiterers.

ANOTHER MIXED BAG

Just browsing today, thanks. Landed on the Hound Blog and, I must say, he's done it again. A great post about the Jesters, one of the last bands to record for Sun Records, and one of many bands called the Jesters. I never heard of these Jesters, and that's what the Hound is good at, pulling something out of his ass that prompts the "where the hell have I been?" reaction. If you're thinking rockabilly because of the Sun Records connection, think again. These mid-60's Jesters play stuff that would fit nicely sandwiched between, aww, let's see, Nuggets type stuff, the Gun Club, Them, mid-60's Stones, and what not. Listen to "Get Gone Baby" and tell me it doesn't sound a little like the Gun Club. Oh, and listen to the version of "Cadillac Man" below, the A-side of the only 45 that the Jesters actually had released on Sun. It's Jim Dickinson on vocals, a suitably wacked out version that didn't fly when it was released. (And that was their only A side, and it wasn't even with their own singer. I tell ya, that Jim Dickinson had his finger in everybody's pie.) There's half a dozen more at Hound's blog, all great fodder for your next game of "Stump the Hipster." Good stuff Maynard.

After hearing "Get Gone Baby," I thought I'd look for the Gun Club's "For the Love of Ivy," because that's the song it reminded me of. I didn't find it, but what I did find was the White Stripes covering the Gun Club's "Jack on Fire" (along with 32 other covers, link below), and a Gun Club cover of Creedence's "Run Through the Jungle." So, I'm two links into a chain of covers, and thinking that this may have opened up a can of worms and take all night. Thankfully, I found a suitable stopping point, Creedence doing "My Baby Left Me," a cover of the Arthur Crudup song that Elvis did while at Sun. So, I'm back at Sun Records, always a suitable place to stop.

JACK ON FIRE

He came along at the right time, when the L.A. punk scene desperately needed to get past it's predominantly one dimensional scenester thing. Despite being untrained and primarily a musicologist and fan, in a most punk way, Jeffrey Lee Pierce just got up there and did it. He immersed himself in the music and imagery of the rural South, and he bucked the methodology of his peers. Instead of going all out to seem irreverent, he changed the way reverence sounds.

Pierce always took the leap. When he liked a band, he became the president of their fan club. When he became enamored with reggae, he spent a year in Jamaica. And when he thought a friend should front a band, he assembled members beforehand. By example, he encouraged others to take leaps, both figuratively and literally.

In the documentary, Ghost on the Highway, Henry Rollins describes the type of person that Pierce was. "Don't give them a real job. They can't even balance a check book, they can't do anything. But they can do that thing. Jeffrey was one of those guys." His passions were uniquely suited for doing what he did, regular day-to-day life be damned. When that meant touring, recording, and living and breathing music, it's no surprise that drugs and alcohol crept in. After bouts with hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver, Pierce died from a brain hemorrhage in 1996, at the relatively young age of 37. We'll never know if he was predisposed to wrecking himself with or without music. All we can take is the music itself, as a gift, and testament to someone whose entire adult life was spent consumed in what he loved.

In interviews, one thing that rock n' roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis is always quick to point out is the rarity of true song stylists, a performer who can really make any song their own. Lewis, humble as he is, points to himself, Hank Williams, Al Jolson and Jimmy Rodgers as the only real song stylists. With all due respect (which, for the Killer, is something I truly mean), I think it would be hard to deny that Jeffrey Lee Pierce was more than a singer. Listen to both his and Robert Johnson's versions of "Preaching the Blues" (below). Give it up, he was a bona fide song stylist.
