EDDIE'S SAFE.

Oh,  wow. I ran into a cover of Eddie Cochran's "Something Else" by Led Zeppelin, from a live 1969 BBC thing. The music backing is pretty straight, about the way you'd expect them to sound covering it. Then, Robert Plant. Gads! While Plant almost quivers you can't help but wonder if he's just having a laugh. It's a really wimpy delivery. Hell, Sid Vicious sings it more convincingly, albeit with more attitude than is really necessary (it is Sid Vicious). I just added the Flamin' Groovies because it was done the same year as Led Zep's. Yee haw, contrast and compare your ass off.

HEY YOU, WITH THE FUCKIN' SANDALS

I'm not enough of a Led Zepp fiend to bother with this one, not tonight anyway, but I know some people are total fiends. Some of my friends are, I know. If you want to join me on the lazy train, I'll save you a click to look at the song list, but you'll have to get turned-on by the Probe directly. (Link below.) Here's the playlist:

YOUR KID ON BLACK DOG

I ran into a documentary on Led Zeppelin, and I thought I'd throw a couple tunes on too. As I've mentioned before, finding things to download is getting harder and harder. Somewhat safe mp3 search engines are a thing of the past. Blogs are going belly up right and left. It's getting to the point that I've checked my old posts for songs. So to go with the documentary you get couple random songs, an oddball cover and a funny video. Total bric-a-brac.

LOMAX LAMENT

I'm in the middle of reading In Search of the Blues, a great book by an old friend of mine from high school. It's about the song collectors of the 1920s and 30s and their journeys trying to run down the undiluted, unadulterated, pure sound of the real blues. Blues as bona fide folk music passed down organically through live intimate performances, without the influence of recorded music or other modern influences. It's a great book. You should buy it. The friend that wrote it used to let me sleep at her apartment in Brooklyn when she was out of town. Yeah, buy two copies.

If you know anything about these song collectors, you know that John Lomax was one of the first to attempt recordings for listening rather than just to transcribe lyrics. (Most of the song collectors before him used wax cylinders for recording which are only good for a couple dozen plays.) Lomax "discovered" Leadbelly and brought him north to New York City, where his fear that Leadbelly would would be influenced by modern music and habits would be borne out. When I heard the difference between Leadbelly's "The Gallis Pole" and Led Zeppelin's "Gallows Pole" I could only think of two things. One was that Lomax was probably rolling in his grave. The other was that Blues Hammer, the fictitious band in the film Ghost World was one of the best examples of music related dark humor ever committed to celluloid.

REMEMBER WHEN THIS USED TO HAPPEN?

A friend posted a thing on Facebook today of kids reacting to the music of Led Zeppelin. Sounds straight forward enough right? Some of the kids show signs of familiarity from hearing them when their parents played them, one from having heard one of the songs from a video game or cartoon, and one kid who tries to appear above it all, voicing a distaste for "real instruments". There are some that really get off on the songs.

I've mentioned several times in past posts how lucky I was to have grown up sharing a bedroom with two brothers who were also music fiends. That all came rushing back when I watched the video. See that kid above? Totally digs Zeppelin. His reactions to the songs totally reminds me of my younger brother at that age. It also takes me back to the enthusiasm that you have as a kid when you first start buying records. The "This is the shit!" mind set. Fuck yeah.

NICE SANDALS, ROCKER.

Okay, so there's an older lady that moved in across the alley. She's 77, thin and walks with a cane. She was out there having a smoke, as was I. Not having seen her come or go before, I figured she was new to the neighborhood, so I introduced myself. Her name was Jeanie.

I know I'll be talking to Jeanie again soon. Gotta remember her name. This one is easy, a song association, "Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie" by Eddie Cochran. Come to think of it, at her age she would have been in high school when that song was released. Note to self: Ask Jeanie if she knows the song "Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie" by Eddie Cochran.

I went looking for the song. Squat. I expanded my search and all sorts of shit popped up. Amongst it, a collection of Led Zeppelin rarities that included two Eddie Cochran covers. First thought: this is gonna be rich.

The covers sound just like what you would expect Led Zeppelin covering Eddie Cochran to sound like, basically like shit. Okay, it does sound like Zeppelin and if you didn't know the songs they would sound like anything else they were doing at the time. But if you do know the songs and you like Eddie Cochran just fine, there are parts that will make you cringe. For example, near the end of the first verse of "C'mon Everybody", when Plant sings "who cares" it sounds like a parody of a seventies rock vocalist. Totally whiney.

All fourteen tracks are in one file, and there's plenty of listenable stuff here. You just have to let the whole thing roll or pick through it to find individual songs. The Cochran covers are at 11:22 ("Something Else") and 31:55 ("C'mon Everybody"). Along with those are covers of Sonny Boy Williamson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin' Wolf, you get the idea.

The Sex Pistols covered the same Cochran songs (three quarters of the Sex Pistols anyway, with Sid Vicious on vocals and Johnny Rotten absent). Compare their takes and Zeppelin's and you will sense a difference. Here's the thing, if you know early rock 'n' roll, you know that certain OG rockers had a sort of swagger. Vicious, in his delivery, has some of that. But 1970-era Robert Plant was suffering from bell bottoms and frilly tops, and a high pitched whiney "who cares".

KANSAS AND MEMPHIS. TUVA? GTFO.

I had forgotten all about Yat-Kha. (That's not them above. That's Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie,) Yat-Kha are from Tuva. That's right, straight outta Tuva, let's get that over with. It's in southern Siberia. They mix traditional Tuvan music with Western music. And with a throat singer. Yeah. Every bit as weird as it sounds.

I had my doohickey on shuffle today and their cover of "When the Levee Breaks" came on. It occurred to the that I'd never heard it back to back with the original. I'm not sure how much it follows Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie's version, or if it's drawn from Led Zeppelin's version. I don't care. It's weird, and my Tuvan collection is week.

DAZED AND CONFUSED DEPOT

Stirring this pot again. Not for the sake of stirring, but because I was hepped to a Yardbirds (the snappy dressers above) version on YouTube, and as long as I'm going there, I may as well stir the pot again. Listen to Jake Holmes's original version of "Dazed and Confused". You'll no doubt hear the similarities in both Led Zeppelin's version and the Yardbirds' version. But it wasn't until 2012 that Holmes settled out of court with Led Zeppelin for a piece of the pie. Seems that back in the day, Jimmy Page thought he changed it enough that Holmes didn't need to be credited. Much as I respect Jimmy Page (particularly his appreciation of Link Wray's "Rumble"), he does seem to have a history of borrowing songs. Perfect Sound Forever covered that topic well, so just go there to see what real sleuths dig up.

SEE HOW FAR YOU GET

Everybody knows "Shakin' All Over". The first version I heard the Who's, from Live at Leeds. You probably know it. It's a mutha. Then I heard the Guess Who's, which predated the Who's by about four years and was a minor hit in the U.S. in 1965. I didn't hear it until later, played on oldies stations. The next version I heard was Johnny Kidd's original, I didn't need to go further. 1960, as it was meant to be heard.

Tonight, study hall was on. I finally decided to school myself on Johnny Kidd, the damn eye patch and everything. Then I decided to look for other covers and.., just forget it. There's too many. I have other goofing off to get to.

WELL, YEAH. NOW I AM.

I'm just putting this up because my friend Skid posted a thing on Facebook, with the Jake Holmes (original) version of "Dazed and Confused." I hadn't ever given any thought to the songs origin, beyond knowing that the Yardbirds did it earlier than Led Zeppelin. Plain or Pan has posted the Holmes original and two versions of Led Zeppelin's, the studio version and an eighteen minute live version from 1971 (for you ultra freaks). For now, here's a video of the Yardbirds version, towards the end, when Jimmy Page was in the band. Plain or Pan posted it too, but I'm just filling space. Plus, if you're lazy, you can get bored without even leaving this post.

WE'RE NEW HERE

I'm by no means a Led Zeppelin fiend, but I know a lot of people who are, and when it comes right down to it, they were a pretty remarkable outfit back in the day. I mean, c'mon, "Immigrant Song" on top 40 AM radio? Just think how many kids had their transistor radios turned up full blast listening to a distorted static laced version of that, sandwiched between the Osmonds and Melanie. Anyway, for you Led Zepp fiends, here's a link to the earliest known soundboard recordings of them, playing at Fillmore West in San Francisco, the day before their first LP was released.

WE MEET AGAIN

This actually started out as a quick post just to shove Foghat's version of "I Just Want to Make Love to You" in front of you, because I love the sound of it. It was produced by Dave Edmunds in the early 70s. It's nothing close to the original, just a nice slice of 70's guitar thud. So, after straying off the path, I ended up going on a two day Willie Dixon binge. It was overdue. I've seen his name in album cover notes since...well, a long fucking time. One of my earliest fetishized LPs (Johnny Winter) had a Dixon song on it. Later, I finally heard his music, and revisited versions by his contemporaries. (If you want a mind fuck, check out this list at Wikipedia.) He was a singer, guitarist, bassist, songwriter, producer, arranger, and talent scout; one of the architects of the Chicago blues sound, as well as the sound of Chess Records. He is the man.

Here's a variety of Dixon written stuff. Starting with a few rock bands. Love Sculpture is an early Dave Edmunds band. And check the video at the bottom. Strap yourself in. it's the pay off. Dixon's in it, with some heavy friends. It is awesome. Turn it up and go full screen on the mother.
