THE STOMPERS RIDE TONIGHT

Last night I was flipping around the TV and saw the opening credits of a movie. "American International Pictures" flashed on the screen, and that's all it took for me to hang around to see what movie it was. A.I.P. was known for low budget, straight to drive-in type movies, many directed by Roger Corman. They did put out a bunch of beach party and horror type movies, but a lot of their best were biker flicks and other assorted tales of rebellious drugged out dirtbags. Among the biker flicks were The Wild Angels, Devil's Angels, The Glory Stompers, and The Born Losers. Non-biker flicks included The Trip, Riot on Sunset Strip, and Wild in the Streets. Can you see why I stuck around? The movie last night was one I hadn't seen, Chrome and Hot Leather, a biker flick that had among it's cast, Marvin Gaye. (I know. What?) It wasn't the best movie, but it had sufficient genre corn. I've sat through worse. Here's one that was better, The Glory Stompers, from 1968, with Dennis Hopper.

The Glory Stompers (1968), with Dennis Hopper (the entire film),

So, I was in the mood for some biker film soundtrack music. You know what that means. Time to dig out the old biker film soundtrack links. These have been posted before, but you may have missed them. They aren't going to go down as great art, but what the hell. Slap an iron cross on your shirt and stomp around your living room with a don't fuck with me attitude. They're perfect for that.

WAIT. HOW MANY?

Back a few months ago, I posted seven cover versions of Jorgen Ingmann's instrumental "Apache" and, although I knew that there were tons more, I considered that enough to demonstrate what one well written instrumental song was capable of in the world of covers. That said, I was totally unprepared for Version Galore's post of 60+ versions. When it comes to due diligence in tracking down covers, there really isn't a contender. Versions Galore is, hands down, the site that hosts the most comprehensive posts of single songs. (How about 80 versions of "Walk On By," including ten reggae versions?)

There was one that I posted that he didn't, probably because it wasn't a cover in the strictest sense. It was a bizarre medley of Captain Beefheart's "Dropout Boogie" and Ingmann's "Apache" by the Edgar Broughton Band. Here's that medley, along with the original and just a few that Versions Galore posted. You know, just to wet your whistle. Of those I listened to, the one I really dug is by Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. Reggae, yeah, but with "sirens wail" backing vocals and either a sitar, or guitar played like a sitar. Oddball reggae, especially by an established name, is relatively rare. Listening is warranted.

MANDATORY

I heard "Here Comes the Sun" yesterday, twice. That's a song that just sort of gets under my skin. I think it all stems from seeing some hippy playing it, sitting cross-legged in the school quad, a long time ago. It was after the sun came out, after days of rain. (I know, just fuckin' gag me.). It was that, or the whole "deeet-um-doo-ba" thing.

I've found myself in this situation before. and one song that could wipe the slate completely clean was "Rumble," by Link Wray. It worked, but that was after only hearing "Here Come the Sun" once. Last night, I added "Blue's Theme" by Davie Allan & the Arrows as a chaser, just to play it safe.

These are mandatory listening if you're not already familiar with them. Not "highly recommended" or "essential," but mandatory. And, should you find ever yourself at a party, and there's no Bluto available to work his magic, these should do the trick.
