DOWN THERE AT THE END OF THE ALLEY

I wasn't looking for this because I didn't know it existed. It's a live set from the Gories from 1989, three years after they formed. What you'll notice is a, eh, somewhat sloppy performance. If you're worried about that, can't get past it, then you're probably not Gories material. It's raw, but not in a Stooges sort of way. To be honest, it sounds like they could use meatier amps. Had I never heard the Gories or Mick Collins's next band, the Dirtbombs, and the video was my first exposure, I'd probably dismiss them altogether. That is, until late in the set when they cover the Velvet Undergound's "Guess I'm Falling In Love". It's not an earth shattering cover but they do it as an instrumental. For me, that's key, because the Velvets' instrumental version is one of my all-time favorite songs.

I'm not exactly making the case for the Gories, but they're that kind of band. You're either in the sonically malnourished garage or the fancy one. I jam econo. There's a couple songs below along with a link to another live set from a 2005 reunion.

THE EVERYMAN ROCKER

For whatever reason, Mick Collins always seemed like the kind of guy you could sit around and drink beer and talk shop with. A no hang ups, unpretentious sort of guy, with taste, semi-chops and lack of preciousness. Never met the guy, and, short of videos, I've never seen him live. But the common thread that runs through the Gories, the Dirtbombs and all the other bands he's been in is a non-retro, capture the spirit but leave the button downs and pointy shoes at home, sort of thing. It just seems that way. Just a general impression, but enough of one to lump him in the one of us category.

After seeing a mention of the Gories in a book today, it was gonna be a Gories night, but it turned into a Gories and Dirtbombs night, then the Oblivians snuck in (Collins wasn't in that band but they hit the same vein), and then a chance encounter with a mix at Adult Swim of all places, Garage Swim, which isn't all garage but raw enough to get you halfway there. It being Saturday night, I'm theoretically off the clock, so these will have to do.

THE GORIES..., HEY OVER THERE!

Okay, so a feature length movie that has among its cast Mick Collins, Iggy Pop, Nathaniel Mayer, Tav Falco, Cordell Jackson and Cub Koda. If most of those names don't mean anything to you, you're probably thinking "So what?" If, however, you recognize most of those names, you're probably thinking the same thing I am. Why haven't I heard about this movie? That's a cast that Jim Jarmusch would envy, every one a music figure, all from different genres. (If you're not familiar with most of them, they all have their own Wikipedia entries, so they're not all that obscure. You might just have a shitty record collection.) The movie's called Wayne County Ramblin', and does not appear to have anything to do with the singer Wayne County (or Jayne County). It could, I've never seen it. (Trailer is here.)

Rather than post music from each of these artists, I'll limit it to the Gories, because it's their fault that I got sidetracked. (Actually, most of those artists haven't been posted before, so I can milk that list for future posts, said the guy who's too lazy to dig around for that many artists in one night.) This post was supposed to be about them, but the video above is what led me to the film, because it was done by the same guy, Dan Rose. And here we are, an hour or so later. It being Saturday, elaboration is taking the night off.

MOPS, MONKS, MONKEES, MOTT, GORIES

Yes Mops fans, we heard you loud and clear. You wanted more Mops. It's Mops mania. Crazy about the Mops. Hooked on Mops. Sweatin' to the Mops. Now, that's what I call Mops! Did a little more digging for stuff about them, and started thinking about other bands that had self-referential song titles. The first that came to mind were the Monkees' "(Hey, Hey) We're the Monkees," and then the Monks' "Monk Time," and Mott the Hoople's "The Ballad of Mott the Hoople." Do you see a pattern? All of those names start with "Mo". Of course, that doesn't mean shit, because the next one I thought of was the Gories' "Hey, Hey, We're the Gories." Pledge break!:

So I found a video, a clip from a Japanese movie, that has the Mops playing from the back of of a flat bed truck, ala Jerry Lee. One of the thing that sets this off in a weird way from the git-go is that the truck is parked at about a fifteen degree incline. It's a neat song, kind of reminded me of Captain Beefheart, for no particular reason.

So here's the Mops song that started a frenzy, some other Mops links, and four from the self-referential song title tangent. All unrelated killer, no unrelated filler.

ROCK OUT WITH DEBBIE D.

Yeah, you're wondering who Debbie D is, right? She's been posting on WFMU's Beware of the Blog, and after looking through her posts, you'll find yourself thanking her. She was the one who posted over four dozen killer mp3's under the title "Songs the Wobbles Taught Us", which was the original versions of songs the Wobbles have covered. Turns out she's done a series of these, most recently "Songs We Taught The Blasters", 33 songs that the Blasters have covered. You can guess what's on that post. Everything from Little Willie John and the Staple Singers to Don & Dewey and the original version of California Sun (by Joe Jones, not the Rivieras...who knew?!). She also did a "Songs We Taught the Fall", which is eclectic as all get-out. The Sonics (aka Godhead), the Monks, the Saints, Lee Perry, Leadbelly, Merle Haggard, Dean Martin, Beefheart...you get the idea. (Which, of course means that if I were getting tanked at a record party, I'd rather have Mark E. Smith spinning than one of the Alvins. Though Phil or Dave could take over during a pee break, no problem.)

When you add similar posts featuring songs that the Mummies, Untamed Youth and the Gories have covered, you're pushing 120 awesome mp3s, even if you discount the few "don't need thats". Granted it takes a total freak to dig the range of music on these posts, but if your tastes are anything like mine, you're wasting time reading this, just go there and start clicking!
