HER FAULT.

On the ride home tonight, it was Gal Costa. She hit the spot. Driving into the beach area where I live, it was sunny and warm, breezy. With Gal Costa on the deck I felt like I was traveling in a different country. I've no explanation. Despite her singing in Portuguese (she was Brazilian) it wasn't that. It may have been the hard to peg nature of her music. It's definitely Brazilian (what with Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso collaborating and a cover of Os Mutantes' "Baby") but not traditional, it's Tropicalia, kind of a mixed bag at that. If you are not familiar with Tropicalia, here's a good primer, Brazil - The Tropicalist Revolution, a documentary on the movement that changed Brazilian music. Part one is below and links to the other parts are at the bottom of the post. If you really want to go down a  rabbit hole, do a random web search for "Tropicalia" and cancel all your plans for the night.

GAL COSTA, REST IN PEACE

On the way home tonight I heard that Gal Costa died yesterday. I really love her music. Every thing below was posted back in June and it's not about her in particular but there's a few of her songs. Given the circumstances I've no reservations about re-posting it. Plus I'm lazy.

I have a new next door neighbor, a Brazilian. There's a lot of Brazilians in my neighborhood. Let me tell you, they know how to have a good time. Several years ago when there were other Brazilians living in my complex, it was when Brazil won the World Cup. They went absolutely ape shit. I put on some Brazilian music as a soundtrack to the spectacle in the courtyard and they barged in my apartment and were jumping up and down on my couch. That vision had me hearing music in my head the for last 24 hours. Os Mutantes, bossa nova, Gal Costa, the whole damn Gilberto family, all the Brazilian stuff I was familiar with. Then, on the way home from the beach today I walked by a house that had bossa nova playing, floating out the screen door. That settled it. When I got home I went looking for some bossa nova that I didn't have, something new to me. I found it, a great mix, but shit. Turns out the first hour of the mix was bossa nova and the second hour was anything goes including douchebags. It's indelibly tainted, it includes a song by Mike Love, king of all popular music douchebags. I cannot, in good conscience, pass that on. I feel tainted just mentioning his name. So, what the fuck, here's a few Brazilian things

GO AHEAD, GET BAKED, WE'LL WAIT.

I was browsing. trying to think of something to listen to, and I ran into an old post at Super Sonido with a bio and several songs by Gal Costa. It sounded like it would hit the spot and it did. I've posted a link to it a handful of times in the past few years but it's been a while (the post is ten years old) but I was thinking that, given the date, 4/20, it might be the kind of thing that would sound good to some of you. I don't know, someone might have told me that. Regardless, it'll make your digs smell fresher.

KINDA MISSED HER ANYWAY

I'm a sucker for Brazilian music, especially when I want it to be warmer, it's getting warmer, or it is warm. I'm not one for cold weather. So it is with pity that I look to you guys that are still ass deep in cold, or rain, or whatever it does where you live. You can keep that change of seasons crap. Me, I'd just as soon park my butt in Brazil.

For the Sake of the Song recently posted a duet by Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso. That's what got me going. Gal Costa's been posted here a number of times, but I'm going with her again because she can get a little crazy. Veloso will get his turn. Hey, there is a link to a documentary on Tropicália. It's just one slice of Brazilian music, we still have the rest of spring and summer to go.

SHIT. WE'RE OUT OF ICE.

Gal Costa, the end of the weekend, and a carbonated beverage. Sounds pretty simple. That's exactly what it is. No additives needed. Tropicalia will work. It's good music for eclipses too.

BLAME IT ON RIO

I had been planning on doing one good Brazilian music post before the Olympics started. All of a sudden it's "Holy shit, the Olympics are starting tomorrow", so there goes that plan right out the window. I'm just too lazy tonight. It's kind of editing by procrastination. You put it off until it's do or die, and then you realize it's just a fucking blog.

So here's a few last Brazilian music things to keep you busy.

TROPICAL CRUSH ALERT

I just heard a cover of Os Mutantes' "Baby" by Gal Costa. I'm not gonna fight it. I started revisiting old stuff, and I got sucked in again. Before I high tail it, I gotta say, that cover photo above is some kind of unattainable cool, isn't it? That thing that Anita Pallenberg had in her prime. Maria Schneider too, Last Tango In Paris-era. The high priestess of lady cool, Brigitte Bardot, in her every burp and fart. Gal Costa exudes that sort of cool, only she has a voice and she's Brazilian. Tropical cool. Yeah baby. And she's made some really great records. Check out the fifteen at Super Sonido. It's an awesome cross section. And read the text. He's got the profile and music stuff covered. Oh, and on "Baby"? She's singing it to me, Just so you know.

BUT WHY SURF IN PACKS?

Here's some Brazil (Brasil to natives) related stuff. Some of you crazy leather wearing nuts might think it too laid back. Loosen the hell up. The rest of you, here's the skinny. Network Awesome's collection of Tropicalia related videos is what instigated all this. It does kind of skip around a bit, so if you want the story of the Brazilian Tropicalist movement, check out Brazil - The Tropicalist Revolution at YouTube. There's also a link to a post with a bunch of Gal Costa's stuff down there. She was a singer in the movement. Good stuff. Then there's another link too the top eleven bossa nova songs, put together by someone who knows a lot more than me on the subject. I'll take his word for it. There's another link to a compilation of bossa nova in spanish. Not that it matters here. Spanish, Portuguese, I don't care. This is a good mix, all light and airy n' shit. I can't figure out how to download all of the songs, so pipe in if you can, or you can just stream it. There's another ten song assortment of Brazilian stuff, all different types, at Aquarium Drunkard.

MUSIC FOR BRAZILIAN STONERS

Boy, oh boy, does the music of Gal Costa have just about all of the ingredients that I dig. Old, weird and foreign; alternately laid back and freaked out, and unlike just about anything else I listen too. The songs below have been posted here before, but having lost most of my music a few months back (my computer took a dump), I was a pig in mud when I ran across the original post again today at Super Sonido, an excellent Latin music blog. So here's a few, but make sure to go to the original post to get the whole story of troplicália and Gal Costa, and a bunch of other cuts.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Depending on where your tastes lie, troplicália could either be a "where the hell is the rock 'n' roll?" thing, or it could be "fuck yeah! different, with just enough weird" thing. I'm among the fuck yeah-ers. Ran into this post at Super Sonido a while back, and find myself returning to it a bunch, just to sort of pace myself. Being that troplicália is poorly represented in my own music stash, this has, over the last week, created another one of those temporary obsessions; the kind that could either last a few days, months, or half a lifetime. One of the cool things about listening to unfamiliar music, that is good unfamiliar music, is that you never know how long the obsession will last, or in what intensity. This being on the cusp, and the anticipation of what may or may not come, is what it's all about.

So, Super Somido ("The Latin America Cultural Reverb"), had this post. It is of Gal Costa stuff from 1968-74. It's good stuff, and varied. Having only dabbled (Os Mutantes), this is where I continue. See you there.
