RESPECT

I just heard this morning that Pharoah Saunders passed away on Friday. I'm not going to pretend that I know much at all about his history but I do like his music. I'm gonna blast these while I go school myself. Jazz is a deep pool and I like the feeling of being a beginner.  All of the stuff below is good but do yourself a favor, listen to Village of the Pharoahs all of the way through. None of this shuffle low attention span nonsense. Knuckle down.

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

Last night I was getting ready to cook dinner (chicken tacos) and thought I'd put on some Pharoah Sanders. I like to listen intently to disorienting music while doing chores and slow or speed up my movements to match the tempo of the song. It sounds ridiculous but it makes you feel like you're in a movie and whatever you're listening to is part of a well curated soundtrack. You think I jest, but try it.

By the time I was done with dinner it was time for the biggee, Village of the Pharoahs. Holy shit, that LP is amazing. More so with the volume up and the lights out. Take it on step further? Move around while it's dark and the volume is up. Now, if you really want to disorient yourself, lights out, volume up, moving around while supporting half your weight from a pull up bar. What's the deal, you ask? If you concentrate on what you're listening to instead of what you're doing, the process can make you feel like you're floating in space. I'm sure all of that would be enhanced by being high. So I've been told.

Here's a couple warm up tunes to listen to while you're making dinner and then the main attraction, Village of the Pharoahs. The title cut (parts 1-3) alone sent me to the record store the first time I heard it.

DO THEY CALL THEM SUPER GROUPS IN JAZZ?

Yee haw! A Coltrane bootleg, a live gig, John Coltrane Sextet - The Missing Seattle Parts 1965. I've no clue. Missing parts? I guess I'll have to read the copy on the post before I start devouring. I'm only one cut in and it's worthy ("Afro Blue End" which is eighteen minutes long). The sound quality is good, much better than what you'd expect from an live recording from 1965. The playing is good too and he's got a top shelf combo (McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Saunders, and Elvin Jones). There is some crazy shit going on. I guess I'll take off on outta here and go read the copy. ONE DAY PACKED INTO TWENTY ONE MINUTES

File this one under "music to listen to when you're trying hard to think of something to write about" or "twenty one minutes of all over the place". Pharoah Saunders's "Healing Song". Listen to the whole thing. It's busy, beginning to end, and it builds and builds. When the freakout comes, it's a whopper. Then it comes down, way down. Something tells me I'll be trailing off after this one.

I just love it when there's all sorts of shit going on in a song. When it's an unusual mix of instruments in a genre that isn't strictly defined, it really has my attention. When it's long and the focus isn't on one particular instrument, that's even better. I happened on this old bookmark and listened to shit going off in a radical manner for twenty two minutes. It reset things.

ANOTHER KIND OF CRAZY MUSIC

Now I've heard everything.  I was cruising around today and I ran into this stuff called jazz (sp?).  It's weird; instruments all over the place, sometimes it slows down, like someone went on a piss break.  Weird.  It's supposed to be popular with smart people, old people (beatniks and such), and sometimes nerds.  I'll have to check it out some day.

Village Dance Radio is a good place to start.  There's a lot to check out.  It's not what you might be looking for, but I'd bookmark it if I were you.  You might not be a smart person, or a nerd, but you will get old, so a bookmark might come in handy.  I bookmarked it, just in case.
