THE ULTIMATE FUCK IT LET'S PARTY SONG

Hey, today was Peggy Lee's birthday. I know that because the jazz station mentioned it, then played her "Is That All There Is?" I love that song, total punk rock. It might be a completely different type of music, but listen to the lyrics. Fuck it, break out the booze, have a ball.

THAT BLACK COFFEE JOKE IS OLD.

That Sarah Vaughn photo that I clicked on that led to yesterdays post was accompanying her "Black Coffee", a very cool song, sultry and all that jazz. I didn't mention it because I thought I had posted it before, but it turns out the version I posted was Peggy Lee's. Neither matters tonight after hearing Black Flag's "Black Coffee", a different song altogether. That's the one that hit the spot, this time anyway. Nice to hear something that sounds that hard without any superfluous decoration. It's just a fucking great song. Lame in the right places. The guitar tone kills me. And the song just goes on and on, for almost five minutes. It's exhausting, but it leaves you wanting more.

BOTH VALID

Here you go. Two different takes on coffee, black coffee to be exact. Yeah I know, like you like your women. These are completely different, but I somehow like them both, a lot. I'd say equally, but I think Peggy Lee might win this one. All things being equal, Lee was pretty and she was sultry. I don't recall Black Flag ever being either. So she gets the edge. I have to go with her. I'm such a tool.

YOU OWE HIM BIG TIME

You've probably heard that Jerry Leiber, half of the Leiber-Stoller songwriting team, checked out yesterday. The duo is responsible for a shitload of R & B, doo wop, and early rock n' roll songs that you probably know like the back of your hand. (Really, check out the list of songs, and the artists that performed them here.) They were incredibly prolific. To wit, they wrote "Hound Dog" in twelve minutes. (That's less time than it takes me to make lunch.) Along with the songwriting teams of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, and Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Leiber & Stoller helped shape the music of the fifties and sixties. A major difference is that Leiber and Stoller also produced, and their production credits are almost more impressive than the writing credits. How's about Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, the Coasters, Ruth Brown, the Drifters, LaVern Baker, the Exciters, the Dixie Cups, and T-Bone Walker? Dude is royalty.
