FUCK. LIVE AND LEARN.

There's a guy I know that hardly ever talks about anybody by name. It's always "the pit bull guy" or "the girl that works as Poma's [a local deli]", "the rockabilly kids". Whenever he gets in a tight spot, he talks about where he can get a quick loan. It's usually one of his cronies from L.A. or Vegas. Rarely do they loan him money, but he hits them up anyway. One guy is a friend he calls "the Pharmacist". Something tells me he's loaded, but been burned a few too many times. He probably had a few outstanding loans in which he recouped squat.

Not too long ago, this friend was unemployed, his wife moved out and he was trying to get some money together so he wouldn't get evicted. Over the course of a few weeks, in his process of elimination type hunt for funds, I must have heard "pharmacist" a hundred times. Everytime he said it, the song "Mr Pharmacist" started playing in my imagined soundtrack of the day. This caused problems when he would repeat it several times in a single conversation. It had the effect of a record skipping in my imagined soundtrack. Now, every time I hear that song I begin to wonder if I'm ever going to see the money he owes me. I bet he probably owes the pharmacist more.

LONG LIVE THE SOURPUSS

Well shit. Mark E. Smith died today. I'm not enough of a Fall fiend to have kept up with his health issues of the last year or so. I'm not going to bullshit like I'm all that knowledgeable about the sixty some odd band members he's had in the 40 years the Fall has existed as a band ("even if it's me and your grand mother on bongos, it's still the Fall"). There's no way I'd be able to totally absorb 32 albums by anyone, let alone someone I've only been listening to ten years or so. Relatively speaking, I am a Fall newbie, but that's irrelevant. What I liked about him and still do, goner he may be, is his don't give a fuck attitude. Not that he didn't give a fuck. He just didn't give a fuck about anyone who debated whether he gave a fuck or not. That's the most important type of not giving a fuck that exists.

PARTY HARD

Have I lost you yet with all of this holiday crap? Don't worry, one more day of it. I'm trying tp pull out things that haven't been posted here before (I think. I'm too lazy to check.) Starting off with that ball of Christmas joy, Mark E. Smith and his ensemble, the Fall, with that holiday favorite "Wishing You A Protein Christmas". Sonic Youth provides a noisy shit show. Can's "Silent Night" is here too (though I think I've posted that before). "Christmas at the Zoo" by the Flaming Lips, who I don't don't normally go for but I like the production, a total dense overload. How about another mix? Another recently unearthed Christmas playlist that was given as a mix tape to the Mumps' Kristian Hoffman by Lux Interior of the Cramps. Boy, that Lux, he sure was a jolly ol' nut wasn't he?.

THE POST PUNK HONEY BADGER

It's not everyday that cranky ol' Mark E. Smith grants an interview and when he does, it's a crap shoot whether or not he offers any useful information. But I'm sure I'm not alone when I find myself watching them nonetheless.  It might be just to see a guy who never really sucks up to anyone. He doesn't give a shit. He's Mark E. Smith.

MARK E. SMITH DOES WANDA

Do you have fancy cable? I don't. So I don't have the Smithsonian Channel. I thought I'd check their site to see if they have streaming stuff, and guess what? Not only do they have some of their shows online, but the first one that I saw right on the homepage was an hour documentary on Wanda Jackson. That, along with of a few of her songs would have just about wrapped things up, but guess what (again)? I ran into a boss cover of "Funnel of Love" by the Fall. Boo-hoo purists, I dig it.

SANS FLUFF

I just spent the better part of the last hour watching the thing below about the Fall. I've been a peripheral observer for years, but they've got thirty albums, and you better think twice about asking a true Fall fiend where to start, because a Fall fiend will go off. You'll expect an album title or two, but you'll get a half hour monologue about how great they are. So, up until now, I hadn't bothered.  I knew little about the Fall. After viewing the video, I now know even less. Which, in a weird way, is why what is good about them. They're confounding, rather Mark E. Smith is. That's one thing, dude was a coot way before his time. He's like that guy you know who drinks a lot and never lightens up. The sourpuss who's usually right about things, but doesn't really bring a whole lotta joy to the table. But, he keeps it interesting and that trumps a lot of other other things. Especially when you can do it for thirty seven years.

ROCK OUT WITH DEBBIE D.

Yeah, you're wondering who Debbie D is, right? She's been posting on WFMU's Beware of the Blog, and after looking through her posts, you'll find yourself thanking her. She was the one who posted over four dozen killer mp3's under the title "Songs the Wobbles Taught Us", which was the original versions of songs the Wobbles have covered. Turns out she's done a series of these, most recently "Songs We Taught The Blasters", 33 songs that the Blasters have covered. You can guess what's on that post. Everything from Little Willie John and the Staple Singers to Don & Dewey and the original version of California Sun (by Joe Jones, not the Rivieras...who knew?!). She also did a "Songs We Taught the Fall", which is eclectic as all get-out. The Sonics (aka Godhead), the Monks, the Saints, Lee Perry, Leadbelly, Merle Haggard, Dean Martin, Beefheart...you get the idea. (Which, of course means that if I were getting tanked at a record party, I'd rather have Mark E. Smith spinning than one of the Alvins. Though Phil or Dave could take over during a pee break, no problem.)

When you add similar posts featuring songs that the Mummies, Untamed Youth and the Gories have covered, you're pushing 120 awesome mp3s, even if you discount the few "don't need thats". Granted it takes a total freak to dig the range of music on these posts, but if your tastes are anything like mine, you're wasting time reading this, just go there and start clicking!
