NATIONAL [PREFERRED TERM] MONTH, PT 6

I've listened to a good amount of Tito Puente over the years, of all different eras. He did it all, big band, mambo, cha cha cha, salsa, boogaloo, Afro-cuban jazz. One thing I didn't expect to hear was a song that sounded like a soundtrack to a blaxploitatio flick or a 70s cop show. I should've guessed it by the title, "Black Brothers". Listen to the other three down there first to get a feel of why I was not expecting "Black Brothers". If you are under a certain age, I should point out that "Oye Como Va" was later covered by Santana. If you do not know who Santana is, go ask your parents.

¡VIVA BÉISBOL!

¡Mierda! It's Latinx Heritage Month and it ends in three days! I haven't had a Latin music post all month! I'll remedy that but quick, with minimal blab. My San Diego Padres (the only Major League Baseball team with a hometown and team name both in Spanish) are playing against the Dodgers in the National League Division series and I have to give that my full attention, especially since it's tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the 5th (as I type this). So here's a few of the boogaloo persuasion. I really dig this type of stuff. But, hey, it's the playoffs. Focus man, focus.

WELCOME FUTURE PUENTE HEADS

Man, if there was ever someone who remained elusive on a hunt for mp3s, it's Tito Puente. Seriously, through all the back alleys of the web for years, all I've encountered is streaming songs and YouTube clips. I know that, with all the streaming services these days, mp3s seem moot. But in my efforts to share music that you might never have considered, I know that a download found is usually listened to more than something that is suggested to you on a stream, for the simple reason that it's easier to listen to again and again, until the familiarity starts seeping in and all of a sudden you're a Puente-head.

TWO DOZEN LATIN KEEPERS

I'm not even going to mess with this one. It's Latin stuff, salsa, boogaloo, and afro cuban, and all hot shit. Most are from the Fania label, basically the Stax of sixties and seventies Latin music. Go to Mixtape Riot and dig on the excellent cross section. Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Joe Bataan, and more of that Fania mob. If you dig those, there's twelve more of similar vintage at Passion of the Weiss. And, to the guy on the fence about Latin music, I have a suggestion. You might want to relax and let it take you where it will.

The LP cover above is really just up there because I dig it, and because the title song, "Acid", is among the songs posted. Know this, it ain't no hippie acid.
