PASSING THE TORCH LIKE A HOT POTATO

Here's a good juxtaposition. Robert Johnson's "Preachin' Blues" covered by the Gun Club as "Preaching the Blues". The Gun Club (above) were an L.A. band made up of off-duty members of the punk scene. They rip the shit out of the song. (Before anybody gets a fact checker hard on, I know Johnson didn't write it and I'm not even sure his version was the first.) After hearing the Gun Club I got distracted and when I get distracted, I relish it as an excuse to bale. So, wrapping things up, as a chaser there's Beehive and the Barracudas' cover of the Gun Club's "Sex Beat".

MAKE THAT THREE.

Most of you know who Robert Johnson is and some of you know exactly how many known photos of him there are. I hadn't checked in a while, but I know the last time I did, probably about twenty years ago, there were two. Now there are three. And that's big news. It was recently posted online, as in the last day or two, and is from the cover of a book about him by his sister. She had the photo with others in a cedar chest for years. The whole story about it is at Vanity Fair.

For those of you who don't know shit, Johnson was a blues man, had a short life, highly influential, sold his soul to the devil, blah, blah, blah. There's tons of shit elsewhere. There's a couple songs down there and a couple covers (the Stones and the Gun Club) but the real reason is just to hep you to photo #3.

MISSISSIPPI SLIM JOHNSON

Been on a bit of a Stones binge lately. Let It Bleed through Exile, at the same time reading Keith Richard's Life and the 33 1/3 Series book on Exile On Main St.. Both books are great, they complement each other, particularly if you're into that era of the Stones, roughly '69 through '72, and you happen to be on that sort of binge. Alas, every time I've posted Stones stuff I've been respectively requested to cut that shit out. Freddy Sessler is on it. So, here's three songs they covered, "You Gotta Move" by Mississippi Fred McDowell (covered on Sticky Fingers), and Slim Harpo's "Shake Your Hips" and Robert Johnson's "Stop Breaking Down Blues" (covered on Exile On Main St.).
