If you've been lurking for a while, you've no doubt run across one of the posts with "shakers", oddball instrumentals known by other terms as well. At first Beware of the Blog was referring to them as "Titty Shakers", then someone made the decision that "Tassel Twirlers" was less, er, coarse. Somehow the term evolved into simply "Shakers". What they are is basically the type of instrumentals you'd hear accompanying a strip show in the fifties or sixties. Cheesy shit, but totally cool once you let it take over. Imagine you're just sitting there, in a dark room. You've got a flat top, wing tips, with the cheapest goddamn after shave the store sells. You've got a pack of Pall Malls, and an ice cold Hamms condensating next to a half full plastic ashtray and there's some drunk jerk yelling "Go Baby Go!" as if it was the first time the missus let him off the leash. Here's the soundtrack.
These are typical of the oddballs you used to be able to pick up at thrift stores for pocket change. Now, due to demand from oddball collectors they're nearly impossible to find for a cheap price. The word is out, everything is listed online somewhere, banged up thrift store finds included. Just snag the mix, there's 34 of them. They really do put you in a weird mood after you've heard a few in a row.

HONK AND GRIND, SPILL YOUR HAMMS
A couple more here from Big Jay McNeely, one of the finest honkers to ever pick up a saxophone. There are more technically proficient sax players, more innovative and so forth, but McNeely just flat out wailed. Check out the songs on this post for some examples of that. He also excelled at strip tease type instrumentals. Here's a couple of them and surprisingly "Strip Tease Swing" isn't even the best of the two. Though I've only heard a fraction of McNeely's output, I can't imagine anything surpassing his cover of "Night Train" for backing the bump and grind. Amazing that it was recorded in 1984, right about when metal invaded the strip clubs (as I've been told...). What a damn trouper, keeping that tassle twirlin' torch lit. Fuck that "Cherry Pie" shit.

THE LURE OF THE THROWAWAY INSTRUMENTAL
Like most people who bought records at thrift stores in the golden age of pre-ebay thrifting, before everything got picked over, I accumulated a bunch of cheap 45s of bands I've never heard of. Most were bought for one of two reasons. The name of the band or the title of the song. It was usually the song title, and there's a higher percentage of instrumental records with good song titles than there are with non-instrumentals. Two reasons: one is that, because there are no lyrics, you can name the song virtually anything. You can go with the obvious, or something way out, or dark. The possibilities are endless. And the other reason that instrumentals have to have a good name is because it has to be memorable, there are no lyrics that repeat the title. That title better be badass and the tune itself better back it up. So, yeah, a bunch of instrumentals are socked away in the hall closet of curiosities.
I really didn't play them with any regularity after a while. My brother was about the only person I knew who appreciated the oddballness of them like I did, and since he passed away in '97, I haven't dug them out very often. As my trips to the thrift stores dwindled, so did the serendipitous scores. They slowly drifted to the back of the stack, and that's where the genre stayed for me, for a good ten years. Then came a chance visit to a graphic designer's website. Patrick Broderick's Rotodesign used to have a song playing in the background, an oddball instrumental that I found myself going back to his site to listen to. At one point I found it silly to go to a website just to hear a song, so I sent him an email asking what the song was. The answer, "Panic Button" by Edgar Alan and the Po' Boys. There you go, an attractive title right there. Turned out that Broderick had found it on one of the Las Vegas Grind compilations. Talk about a can of worms. That series is oddball instrumental gold. My interest was back. Soon fortified by a surge in "(fill in the blank) shakers" interest on blogs, particularly the great Beware of the Blog and Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban, both products of WFMU in New York. In the ensuing years, I've found the oddball instrumental pot is bottomless. You will never come close to hearing even half of them. It seems that every group with four or more members was on that bandwagon in the fifties and early sixties. They were simple, easy, and cheap to record. Hell, as much as I like them, they're not Mozart. Any seventeen year old kid could play them, and most did. They served as entry level records for young recording artists as well as cash-ins for lounge bands that would never get their full due, and studio musicians looking for a quick novelty buck.
Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban is still riding on the "Instrumental 45 of the Week" series, and that's where I go if I need a fix, which I do, at least once a week.

A SOLID GAS
I've got no clue and, quite honestly, I don't want one. All I know is when I hear something like these two cuts, I don't care about genres, eras, personnel, writers or any of that. I don't even want to go as far as seeing if these were the same Premiers that did an excellent cover of Don and Dewey's "Farmer John" (though I doubt it, different sound and this Premiers record was on a NY label). I just want to imagine it as a soundtrack for doing nothing, because that's just what I'm about to do.

BARBASOL VS THE HIPSTERS
I just spent a good chunk of time listening to old school strip tease type instrumentals, usually referred to shakers or twirlers of some sort, and watching old stripper footage at YouTube. The clips are part of the Something Weird Video collection. When you get there, just bookmark it. It's more than just jiggle clips. It's all sorts of oddball B-movie trailers and exploitation of this and that.

NUGENT DISEASE
Fucking Charlie Daniels. I don't hate him, I hate his right wing views. I hate that I have to think about that, and then try to blank it out, just to give his music a chance, particularly the early stuff with the Jaguars. They're nothing like his Southern rock shit, something else I have to blank out. But that early stuff, man, it's a ruckus. Nothing over the top on it's own, just blasting period rock 'n' roll. Kind of. It's really Batman meets Link Wray with a heavy dose of stinky sax type shaker. The type of loud that forces you to turn it up. That makes it rock 'n' roll. Whatever, the stuff works.

NICE WINGTIPS
Man, it ain't like the good ol' days. I don't mean the days of old school bump and grind, I mean the old days when people used to post old school bump and grind type music. It's referred to these days as all sorts of things, tassel twirlers, shakers, burlesque, and the one that's grown to bug me, titty shakers. Whatever it is you want to call them, they used to be posted on blogs all the time. Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban posted a lot of good ones, and mixes. And for a while they had a "Tassel Twirler Tuesday" (or something like that). Diddy Wah has posted his fair share. I don't know the reason, but you don't run into them that often anymore. Damn shame. But Music For Maniacs recently posted a good mix. Though there are a few radio ads for sexploitation flicks, and not all of the songs are bona fide shakers, but there's some good ones and a few oddballs. The original version of "Baby Let Me Bang Your Box" by the Bangers, Jayne Mansfield's "Suey" with a young Jimi Hendrix on guitar, and Big Jay McNeely's "Striptease Swing" are standouts, but there are lots of them and the zip contains individual files, so you can have yourself a pick and choose party.
There's a handful of other ones to get you in the mood. The ones posted by Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban are the real "Go baby go!" shit. They set the bar.

NICE WINGTIPS
If you lived in San Diego before it got spiffed up downtown, and spent any time in the vicinity of the Greyhound station and the Funland arcade, you no doubt walked past a seedy looking time machine of a strip bar, the name of which escapes me. Strip bar, because it had strippers, and it had alcohol, but there's no way it qualified as a strip club. I'll give you an idea what it was like. In the display window, where a glamor photo of an entertainer may once have been, there was a faded black and white poster of Raquel Welch, from One Million Years B.C. It was in that window for years, decades after the film had come and gone. I must have walked past it 46 times.
After seeing the poster slowly deteriorate for years, I decided to see if Raquel Welch was inside. She was not. But I passed through some sort of portal. It was very dark, the room smelled, sweat, booze, cigarettes. I was with my friend Kevin. We had decided that that, if we were curious enough to look inside, it would be the right thing to do, to sit down and take it in with a beer. But in a single moment, our voyeuristic anthropological study got turned on its face. There were about a dozen or so patrons in the bar, most were just kind of glancing at the stripper. No real gaping. The dancer finished her set, and then, from the stage, she said "I'm off work. Does anybody want to take me home with them?" Dead silence. The scene had such a sad, pathetic vibe that my buddy and I just looked at each other and simultaneously nodded towards the door. As we were walking out, "...And thaaat was..."
I honestly don't remember what music was playing in that place, but I'd like to imagine that at one time, in its heyday, they were spinning stuff like the songs below, all from the Las Vegas Grind series of compilations. Thanks to the Mystery Suggester, I now know that the Gee Cees' "Buzzsaw Twist" is an early Glen Campbell cut (1961). Hence this whole diversion.

IS THAT ARAMIS?
The hippies that live in the complex behind mine are having a field day. I've been subjected to their awful sing-a-long beat on the drum renditions of what they think folk music is for the past several hours. Might be that Dev-whatever. (This guy. Is that not a hippie version of Fred Durst?) So that's the current breed of bonehead I have to contend with. While all their unshaven blissed out crap is going on, I'm undergoing treatment with an aural antidote. Imagining I am far, far away, in a dank club, wingtips on, pack of Pall Malls and a Hamms (from the land of sky blue water motherfucker), not even paying attention to all the jiggling up on the stage. I'm here because off-key hippies, particularly those who can't keep a beat, would never dare cross the threshold. (Just remember, from the land of sky blue water motherfucker.)
Sounds pretty mean spirited, huh? I exaggerate. Barking aside, these instrumentals, commonly referred to as one type of "shaker" or another, really are the antithesis of what I've been hearing.

SLIGHT RETURN (LITERALLY)
How do you know when things are inching toward normal? When you've suffered some damage from a storm called Sandy, and you're a hot ass blog in New York City, it's marked by a return to Tassle Twirler Tuesdays. So it's time to catch up on a backlog of these fine oddball instrumentals posted at Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban. If you dig these sort of anthropological knuckle dragging nuggets, a whole lot of them have been posted before (all of the links can be found here). Easy on the greasy kid's stuff, it may be a long night.
If you frequent Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban, you probably know that WFMU, the host of their most awesome blog, took a serious hit from Sandy. If you're so inclined, you can donate to help them pay for the damage incurred here, and as long as you have your plastic out, it might be a good idea to help out Norton Records as well. If you're unfamiliar with Norton, take a stroll through their site and keep in mind that a lot of the music they've reissued would be lost forever if not for their efforts. Sandy flooded their warehouse, so they could use some of your pocket change. Tightwads repent!

GET OUT THE WING TIPS

It's that time again. Time to catch up on Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban's Tassel Twirler Tuesdays. By now, you may have noticed a fondness of these late fifties and early sixties instrumentals, known to many as "tittyshakers." Though the term is widely used, I've decided to retire it as a tag for these posts, replacing it with the equally descriptive but less monster truck-ish term "strip tease instrumental." All of you sweaty pigs can cry foul if you want. The way I figure it, if Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban, the host of quite a few of these gems, has made it a point not to use the term in question, the least I can do is fall into line with their unwritten style guide. Do not weep. Kogar is still an ape, and he still swings. That has not changed.

LET'S SHAKE ON IT

Just catching up on those swinging, honking, ba-boom-ba-boom instrumentals that seem to appeal to me and and seven other people. Nevertheless, for ye who still wear wing tips, here are a handful of prefix omitted shakers that reek of Pabst. As per usual, these have come from Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban and Diddy Wah, two purveyors of shit I like. Both are worthy of stops on your rounds.

YOU'RE BLOCKING THE JUKEBOX

There are approximately four of you who dig this type of music; the type of stuff that you might have heard in a strip bar, oh, I don't know, about fifty years ago. Obviously, I wasn't there, and I've never really frequented those types of places in any era. That might be why this music appeals to me. I imagine a bunch of flat tops, wing tips, cigars, and Hamms on draft. It's funny, I don't really even imagine the bumping and grinding all that much. Lest I over analyze why I like these, I'll cut to the chase. Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban's J.R.Williams has posted a few of these mixes in the past few months, and Kogar the Swinging Ape posts single songs on Tassel Twirler Tuesdays. It's not my intention to force this stuff on anyone. I just know that I like this type of instrumental, and I'd be remiss if I didn't alert the four of you who do as well. Jesus, I smell cheap aftershave and stale beer just reading the song titles.

GO, BABY, GO. I GUESS.

Yeah, yeah, I know. You didn't ask. But there are a few of you who appreciate the soothing sounds of the jiggle clubs of yore, so here you are anyways. It's been several weeks since we checked in with Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban's Tassel Twirler Tuesdays. I was reminded of the backlog by the recent posting of More Saturday Shakers, a thirty three song mix of songs that fall under the same loosely defined genre. The ingredients are simple: a ba-boom ba-ba-boom beat, some honking horns, occasionally the presence of an organ, and, to add a little flavor and make it actually seem like there was some effort put forth in the crafting of these dime-a-dozen otherwise throwaway instrumentals, a few oddball lyrics. But you know what? I can't get enough of them, primarily because after you've heard several in a row you'll find yourself slipping on the wing tips and grabbing some singles for a destination that no longer really exists.

IT'S CHEAP AND YOU GET A LOT

This could have lead into dissertations on either of the two subject matters, Mexican food or instrumentals. But let's see if we can keep it short. It all started with the usual meandering, landed on Jukebox Mafia, and their latest post, "Tacos" by the Royaltones, featuring a young Dennis Coffey. It reminded me of the backlog of instrumentals that I've been meaning to mention, and it also made me think of Mexican food in general. I love Mexican food. I pretty much grew up on it, in every variety. I'll stop right there. That's a topic that I had better not get started on. There's a few Mexican food links below if you're in the mood.

About the instrumentals: Following the one mentioned above, there's a handful from Diddy Wah, who always posts oddball ones (go there for more). Then there's the latest Tassle Twirler Tuesday post, from Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban, and a big ass mix of instrumentals on another post over there. The mix has stuff from Ritchie Blackmore (presumably early), the T-Bones, Johnny and the Hurricanes, Jerry Cole, Hal Blaine, Al Casey and a whole lot of other people I ain't ever heard of.

WADDYA CALL 'EMS

I tell you, this is one well that never runs dry. In addition to Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban's Tassel Twirler Tuesdays, in which they feature jiggle club tunage once a week (courtesy of Kogar the Swinging Ape), today they posted a mix, thereby relieving me of my duty of scrounging up a bunch of stuff for you to dig into. Here's a link to last Tuesdays Tassel Twirler, and another to the 33 song mix they just posted (below).
While we're on the subject of Tassel Twirlers, I've mentioned a couple of times my distaste for the alternate term "titty shakers," not because of it's crassness, but because it's not all that clever. Well, it seems the official ruling over at Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban is that they don't like the term either. They have, in the past, referred to them as "rock 'n' soul shakers" and "tassle twirlers." In todays post, they concede to the commonly used term "titty shaker" but do so by censoring the "T" word. Also just today I ran into this nicely worded line at Art Decade: "I believe this kind of jam is what is known in record nerd parlance as a 'titty-shaker'" (You do say, my man.) So, here's a challenge to you wordsmiths, who also happen to like strip club music of the fifties and sixties: come up with a better term. None others seem to have stuck

NO, I CAN'T JUST DROP IT.

Consider this just your notification service. You asked to be reminded, right? A day late, it's "Tassle Twirler Tuesday" over at Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban. Yes, I know. Seems like just yesterday we were talking about the strip club instrumentals of yesteryear. It's actually been a week or so. Regardless, all eyes on Rock 'n' Roll Ichiban and Kogar the Swinging Ape's Tassle Twirler Tuesday.
About the second one, just go there to get it. Really. February was Joe Tex Month, so if you go backwards there's tons of Joe Tex oddities, and, I'm sure, "I Gotcha" is buried in there someplace.

THIS TOO IS A GAS

No particulars here, not about the record anyway. It was posted at Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban, and is credited to Alfred E. Neuman and the Furshugginer Five. The song is called "Potrzebie," a word that should be familiar to the readers of Mad magazine. What it means, I don't know. Who's behind the record? No clue. Do I care? Not one iota. Being that it was a posted in a series of Tassel Twirler Tuesday posts over there at the Ich, I felt compelled to continue to drag this subject, that of tittyshakers, right into the ground. Really though, a bump 'n' grind song, by someone calling themselves Alfred E. Neuman. Would you be able to resist?

It's hard to peg down the appeal of vintage sleaze. Maybe it's because it comes from a time when the line between smut and almost smut was clearly defined. Who the hell knows? But, just as the chikka-chikka soundtrack of 70's porn has a certain (to some, kitsch) appeal, so does the music of the strip clubs of the fifties and sixties, often referred to as tittyshakers.
I think I've mentioned before that I've got a problem with the term tittyshaker. Probably because I'm not particularly fond of the term titty to begin with. There's a thousand terms for women's breasts and "titty" is like the mullet of boob terms. Who ever thought that one up ought to go to a Russ Meyer seminar.
I ran into a few of these fine instrumentals in the past few days, so I thought I'd post them, along with a few posted previously. Sadly, the links to the Las Vegas Grind series that I posted a while back are dead (I checked). Nonetheless, there's enough for you to get your "Go, baby! Go!" on.

GO BABY, GO!

Sometimes one serendipitous click can turn into hours of good music that you didn't know existed. Several years ago, while checking out a graphic designer's site (Rotodesign), I happened upon the Annex page and was stopped dead in my tracks by the background music. After emailing the site owner I found out that the tune was "Panic Button," by Edgar Allen and the Po' Boys, and that it was lifted from a compilation called Las Vegas Grind. Completely unaware that the compilation was but one in a series of six, the slow accumulation of the series began.
The Genteels - Take It Off
The Las Vegas Grind series consist of oddball instrumentals ranging from R&B, to surf-like, to just downright weird. Though, given the name of the series, they're all probably considered to be what is commonly referred to as, ahem, titty shakers. It would be hard to imagine even the most demented of strippers bumping and grinding to some of these, but you know what? If that's what gets someone to compile this many screwball instrumentals, they can call it Mantovani for all I care.
