I'M SORRY, WE'RE OUT OF TIME

Man, Roxy Music just can't get a break around here. After constant detours, I was finally going to kick out a post about them, and just get it out of the way. But for the fourth or fifth time, I ended up somewhere completely different. Tonight it was going to start with "Editions of You" because it's early, relatively raw, and it pretty much rocks. Then it was going to be Mudhoney's cover of it (insane guitar on that one), and on to more Roxy Music from there. But I paused, thought about how "Editions of You" could very well be their "Rip This Joint", which is, of course, one of the most rocking songs the Stones ever did. Both songs are raw, and both with a nod towards fifties era rock 'n' roll, particularly the sax solos. Then I ended ended up watching a clip of Green Day doing "Rip This Joint" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which I hadn't seen before. Or at least remember seeing. It's tight, but all I could think was "they better have a sax solo". They did. And now I'm no longer thinking about Roxy Music. That's how that happens.

YOU CAN SHAKE OTHER STUFF TOO

It isn't often that you run into Exile-era Stones clips that aren't concert footage, so, what the hell. Check the clip linked below. It's them doing "Shake Your Hips" from the German TV show Beat Club, what appears to be a rehearsal, or maybe just a promo film. To compare and contrast, there's the original too, from Slim Harpo. As things happen, while looking for an image I ran into a high resolution of that baddass one above. That was it. Fuck the Stones, it's Slim Harpo's night.

USED TOOLS FOR SALE

The Rolling Stones are reportedly playing a private party tonight, in a venue near San Diego that holds about 500 people. They are being paid by Ralph Whitworth, an ex-HP fat cat, reportedly to the tune of two million dollars. That's $2,000,000. That's a lot of cheese. This Whitworth fellow must have a deep wallet, and really, really want to impress his friends. I think it's disgusting.

There are a number of reasons why this sucks, if it is indeed happening. First, the money. Defenders would say that in many cases like this, the artist just designates a charity and the money goes to a noble cause. Bullshit, I do cry. If this was so charitable, why doesn't the artist just donate the money without playing? Hell, how about Mr. Bucks Deluxe? Another thing that bugs me, is that it's the Stones. Yeah, they've been an exclusive lot for a half a century, practically out of the gate. But what happened to those nose thumbing rebel rousers who once stated "We piss anywhere, man."? We all know that changed years ago, but c'mon. Suckups. (Note: You kids of today, nothing past "Exile". If you don't know what that means, you will.)

And then there's Whitworth. I don't know anything about him, other than he's obscenely wealthy, entirely out of touch, and insanely desperate for attention. And he's sucking our oxygen. Think I'm being harsh? Check this, the same guy hired another band to play as a surprise for his wife's birthday party, and that set him back one million dollars. I don't know if the band had a name, but the singer was some hack named Paul McCartney. True story. His money did go to charity, but again, just get out your checkbook and quit showing off like an asshole.

That felt good.

WE PISS ANYWHERE MAN

I was bumming around The Hound Blog the other day and I ran into a really good post about the bootleg 6 CD set that is The Genuine Black Box, a set that the Hound rates as the best ever Stones bootleg (and this guy knows his shit). He posted a whole bunch of worthwhile stuff, from early demos and unreleased finished songs to alternate takes and alternate vocals (Jagger on "You Got The Silver," and Richards on "Gimme Shelter"). I'm not linking to any of the songs, because you really ought to go there to get them, he's got all these awesome annotations going on. (Click on the linked song titles in the text for the songs.) All the stuff is great quality, some much more raw sounding than the released versions, which suits me fine. (Check out "Jumpin' Jack Flash.") Well, don't just stand around looking stupid. Go get 'em!

JERK IS THE WORD

Who's idea was it? I have wanted to know for years, just who's idea it was for the Stones to change the phrase in Chuck Berry's "Come On," that goes "some stupid jerk trying to reach another number" to "some stupid guy trying to reach another number"? Being that it was done on their very first 45, it could be the secret of the whole dynamic of the band. What if Jagger and Richards agreed about everything else up to that point, but Jagger was insistent enough about changing the word "jerk" to "guy," that Richards assumed the "fuck off" attitude of the band, right then and there? Or could it have been the idea of Andrew Loog Oldham? Maybe they had a vote. Who knows? I thought that the answer to this lingering question would be in Richards' tell-all autobiography Life, but no. He doesn't tell all. Not of what I want to know.
The answer's probably out there, in some Stones book, or in the mental database of any real Stones fiend. Regardless, I was reminded of that when I ran into a couple posts at Boogie Woogie Flu. Both posts are about the Stones' early material, particularly the covers they did, and they're a nice mix of the covers original versions, early Stones oddballs and a couple of unreleased tracks. I'm not linking directly to any Stones stuff (just go there to get them). Let's just say that this time it's because they changed the lyrics to a Chuck Berry song on their first record. Yeah, they're lucky this big shot listens to them at all.
