IT'S MONSTER SURFING TIME SOMEWHERE

Here we go, the start of the yearly Halloween slackfest, starting with It's Monster Surfing Time, the LP by the anonymous studio band the Deadly Ones. Many postulate that Joe South was involved because J.South appears in the songwriting credits, Who cares really? It's seasonal semi-lame cash-in surf corn. I can live with that.

THAT TIME AGAIN

Here they come, the last minute cavalcade of Halloween tunes from years past. As you true blue party monsters know, weekend parties are for amateurs. It's not over until the last guy shows up at work hungover on Tuesday morning. So get 'em now ghouls.

First up is the perennial favorite It's Monster Surfing Time. The LP cover above tells you just about all you'll need to know. Really, it's the ultimate cash-in, monsters and surf music, both in one fell swoop. There are details, some. The band members aren't named, but five of the songs were written by a J.South, leading to speculation that Joe "Games People Play" South had something to do with it. In the end, who cares? It's good clean fun, it's no Eddie and the Showmen, but it works. Just add some booze as catalyst.

IT'S 4:21 SOMEWHERE

Man, I was starting to panic. I was having a hard time finding a live post of "It's Monster Surfing Time", the album by the mysterious studio band, the Deadly Ones. It's a no-brainer this time of year, and a guaranteed cheap post I look forward to taking advantage of. Sorry if you've heard it, been there, done that, but some of the younger creeps may not have. That's how damn thoughtful I am.

I've looked and looked and found nothing of a backstory, with the exception of songwriting credits at AllMusic. Out of the twelve songs, five were written by "J. South". Is it Joe South? I don't know. That's why I continue to look for a backstory. Every year I give it up after a few pages of search results. Would knowing more make it a better album? Possibly. Would knowing it was the brainchild of Joe South diminish my respect for him? No. Is it a throwaway novelty LP, or a brilliant double cash-in? Or is it time to stop thinking about it and just get nutty already?

WHO NEEDS A WATCH?

Yeah, you know what time it is. Here's the full LP, really more surf than monster, but it does have the requisite corn. The title song is down there, just so you know what you're getting yourself into. But, really, can you resist? You know you want it. Of course it's been posted before. Who cares? It would fit neatly in that category too obvious to not post. Have at it, creeps.

OF COURSE IT IS

Do you like your surf music with groans, screams, gurgling and ridiculous ghoulish spoken intros? This sucker is just the thing. A 1964 record that is every bit as good as the cover. Twelve, count 'em twelve instrumentals done by a band that may as well not exist. All that I was able to find in the way of true identities of this fine ensemble was two mentions of Joe South. Joe "Games People Play" South? If that happens to be true, it's the best damn costume I've seen in years. The taster below is the title cut. But I'd definitely go to Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban for the whole thing. A perfect balance of on topic hokum and seriously good playing. Listen to that first one, it sounds like the Mummy got all tangled up in the whammy bar. You'll see.
