LOCK DOWN THEATER NIGHT 49

This is getting to be a regular Lock Down Theater Film Festival around here. I had been seeing a link pop up in the sidebar at YouTube for The Wrecking Crew but every time I did a search, a thousand other short Wrecking Crew links popped up. Finally found the full thing. It's a documentary about the West coast studio musicians who played one everybody's records. At different times they were Monkees, Turtles, Beach Boys, Paul Revere and the Raiders and Byrds. Fans had no idea...then.

I'm not sure that it was a well kept secret or if the buying public just eventually became more interested in who actually played on what. The cat may have been let out of the bag with drummer Hal Blaine's 1990 memoir. That's also where the debate began about what the studio musicians actually referred to themselves as. Some of them backed up Hal Blaine, agreeing that they used to refer to themselves as "The Wrecking Crew", but bassist Carol Kaye one of the most used musicians of the bunch (so she ought to know) said they called themselves "The Clique", It's possible that neither were widely used back in the day because people back then didn't try to brand the fuck out of everything.

The free full length version at YouTube has ads but you know what to do. Just let roll, hit the head and stop by the fridge on the way back.

LOCK DOWN THEATER NIGHT 48

I can't believe that I hadn't heard of this one. A TV special from Paris that had aired on New Years Eve 1968 with the Who, Small Faces. Pink Floyd, the Troggs, the Equals, Joe Cocker, Booker T and the MGs, Fleetwood Mac and Les Variations. I just spot checked it and so far it looks really good. The Who and the Small Faces lip-lynched their songs while everyone else performs live.

This was an intimate studio venue with a low stage. There are flailing limbs, kids jumping on stage, and a little crowd surfing in one set. The unexpected bonus is the footage of the studio audience. Paris in 1968? You know there's some style going on. Post-mod type style, and all hopped up on something.

I know there was a Johnny Thunders doc posted not too long ago so I had second thoughts about posting this one. The thing is, I was sucked in. It's a mix of interviews and old footage.and is far more engrossing. So I'm cutting out to finish watching it.

TWELVE MINUTES OF MINGUS

Charles Mingus is one of those jazz greats that I've yet to completely devour. It's kind of the same for any artist when I'm just beginning to listen to. It might be years before I seriously dig in. When I hear something I like, I note it and continue to listen to any random thing until I hit a stinker. Then I start to re-access. The longer the artist bats a thousand, the more respect and attention they get. But when they end up going on a long string without a stinker, there is a higher likelihood that a stinker is right around the corner.

I can't say I've listened to a lot of Charles Mingus compared to real fiends of his work, but I have enough to know that the stinker quotient is extremely low. I was initially drawn to him because he's who I think  my teenage self would have thought that jazz was. The truth is that the first time I heard his music it already sounded familiar, not a particular song or sound but just the overall feel. Mingus is jazz.

THE GLASS HALF FULL EXISTS

Soul Garage rules, dormant though it is. There's a ton of great stuff, all obscure, most only known to collectors. It's like finding that bag of old thrift store finds in the back of the closet and being reminded why you kept them. The descriptions at Soul Garage are in German but when you hear a song you like you can copy and paste and translate the text online.

These two have been here before, but you don't know that. The first is Dee Dee Warwick's original version of "You're No Good", the song that was a hit later for Linda Ronstadt. Produced by Leiber and Stoller, with a short and simple semi-fuzzed out guitar solo. The other song is Oscar Brown Jr's version "Work Song", because bongos.

THE RETURN OF THE MAN FROM ELEKI

His name came up,...wait. He came up in conversation tonight but I butchered his name. It's Takeshi Terauchi. I got the Terauchi right, but couldn't remember his first name, so I came here. After reminding myself what his name was I thought I's play one of his cuts. Right in the first few seconds of "Kanjinncyou" where he starts with a "Yooooo" I knew where this night was headed. Before I fly off to to the rabbit hole of Japanese instumental rock, here's some by what's his name. Dig it.

"OH HELL YEAH" OF THE WEEK

Wow, this is cool if you're into reggae. A Tapper (or Tappa) Zukie LP I didn't know existed. I just saw the title, Tappa Zukie - Horms Up! Dubbing With Horns. I was all over that. I love Tapper Zukie and I love horns in reggae. Then I saw the release date, 2009. Oh shit. Could go either way. I took a chance, and I was rewarded. Once I listened to it I knew it wasn't that recent. I shit you not, I heard the trumpet and it was like hearing Bobby Ellis on a Burning Spear LP. It was more organic sounding. I placed it in the seventies and, as it turned out, that was the case. A lost tape found and released thirty years after it was recorded. And the trumpet player sounded like Bobby Ellis because it was Bobby Ellis. Vin Gordon's on it too, trombone. Sly and Robbie are on it (pre-syn-drum), Earl "Chinna" Smith, Winston Wright, ...this thing is packed.

LOCK DOWN THEATER NIGHT 46

I'm not really sure how many of you are into Latin music, but if you are, you no doubt know that Johnny Pacheco passed away two days ago. He was a co-founder and musical director of Fania Records and he put together the Fania All-Stars, the supergroup that had something like forty revolving members, including a shitload of Latin superstars. Fania was huge in tn Latin music.

I wasn't able to find any mp3s of Pacheco, but I did find the film Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa Latina) a documentary, I think, about the seventies Latin scene in NYC, which was pretty much ground zero in the U.S. Lots of good live footage. There's a few songs down there too, not Pacheco but some of his fellow Fania artists.

IT'S FAT TUESDAY SOMEWHERE.

Yikes, with a little less urgency than normal. Normally there'd be at least a couple exclamation points involved, but this being a covid year, plain wrap yikes is enough. I realized today that Fat Tuesday is tomorrow and I haven't posted a lick of New Orleans music. There's the yikes. But there's a lack of urgency. Alas, the parades are off, and I don't know about bars and parties but my guess is that they're at least being discouraged. So what do you do the final night of Mardis Gras when you can't get out? Grab a bottle and click all over the place until you pass out and do a face plant on your keyboard. Or not.

Here's a few random New Orleans cuts and links to four posts at Time Goes Buy with a shitload of New Orleans music, all eras, all styles.

LOCK DOWN THEATER NIGHT 45

Man, it was short but sweet for Gram Parsons. He died in 1973, at age 26. Ingram Cecil Connor III (his real name) was born into money, trust fund future, family butler, the whole thing. Then he went to college. While there he formed a band, the International Submarine Band, in 1966. Two years later he was in the Byrds.  While in the Byrds he steered the direction of Sweetheats of the Rodeo. Then he and Chris Hillman, also from the Byrds, started the Flying Burrito Brothers, whose first LP is regarded by some as one of the first country rock LPs. (Sweethearst of the Rodeo also gets mentioned.) Along the way he was buddies with both Keith Richards and Jonathan Richman (Modern Lovers, yes, that Jonathan Richman). Here's a documentary, titled on YouTube as GR4M P4RS0NS - F4LLÆŽN ANGÆŽL (to evade detection) but you can figure it out. I haven't watched the whole thing but what I've seen is good.

WHO THE FUCK IS THIS GUY?

I was just browsing at Rubber City Review and ran into a handful of funk cuts James Brown's "Give it Up and Turnit A Loose" among them. The evening was about to unravel. Brown's "Give It Up..." reminded me of the cover of it by Black Randy and the Metro Squad, from 1979. That's when it happened. Every time I revisit that one (the cover), I marvel at the fact that the band existed in the pre-hardcore L.A. punk scene. Just listen to their version. It's equal parts punk rock, no wave and funk. Amazing, especially for the time it came out and the scene that produced it (the Metro Squad were all members of other bands). One thing that just hit me tonight was how much Black Randy reminds me of John Belushi's Bluto character in Animal House, in spirit if only vaguely in appearance. To get an idea of his hi-jinx there's a lengthy bio at Perfect Sound Forever and a couple interesting recordings of him at YouTube. One as a guest on a radio show (Richard Meltzer's) and another of a phone call when he's trying to get the bill changed at an upcoming gig. The promoter (Paul Rat) is planning on the Go-Gos (pre-hit) and Tuxedo Moon. Black Randy wants the Mentors. That's like someone countering a candy bar with dog shit. Anyway, there's a few of his cuts at Killed By Death and if you like his version of the JB song, head there for a download. The guy was a nut who knew music, was irreverent and self effacing. Wrong on more than one occasion but, shit, could we use him now. That's got me thinking. Whatever happened to Har Mar Superstar?

THE SOOTHING SOUNDS OF SUCK FACE

Here you go. A tad early for Valentines Day but I didn't want to flake. In years prior I'd posted these links and had at least once suggested that they'd make a great soundtrack to a Valentines Day party. Well, we all know that's not gonna happen this year. But you can still hang with your bubble babe. Think of it as a litmus test. If she/he/it can't find anything to like in these mixes, let her/him/it know they're in the wrong house. After they leave eat the chocolates and get drunk.

LOOK, WE GOT A SNAKE!

Say what you will, as do I, about post-School's Out Alice Cooper. After that one they went from being a little scary to being a joke, a high school play. But their early LPs have some interesting stuff, like this one, "Halo of Flies". They can't figure out if they want a hard rock song (it is 1971), or maybe something psychedelic, or maybe just do the rock opera thing. It's not a hit. It's eight minutes of "Eh, this ain't so bad."

WHO RAVED?

I was looking for something completely different when I ran into Jet Harris. Okay, so here we have the bass player for the Shadows gone solo. Not exactly the instrument to break out and do the solo thing, so I kind of had to hear what it was like. I mean, how often do you run across solo stuff from a bass player? Yeah, John Entwistle did at least one solo LP, and Gene Simmons did back when all four members of Kiss found a new way to bilk their fans. But in the early sixties? The first one I listened to, "Raved", was all I needed. Jet Harris was no longer a member of the Shadows or a bass player that went solo. Jet Harris is now officially in the book as the guy who could make his instrument fart.  "Raved" starts with a distorted bass, playing lead. Then, at :20, he lets it rip. Braaaappp!!!! That's all I needed to hear. He does it again at 1:09 and a third time in the outro. This sort of shit slays me. It may seem juvenile to hear it as a fart, but, c'mon, farts are funny, especially when they don't stink. Said the juvenile.

As for the other stuff, it's like Duane Eddy. Apparently Harris also played guitar so "Raved" is likely an anomaly. Regardless, the other stuff is very cool as well, fartless though it may be. "Diamonds" is rad, killer little drum break in the middle, with guitar supposedly by a young Jimmy Page. I don't particularly care. It's good on it's own merits.

LOCK DOWN THEATER NIGHT 44

If you're into hip hip, but only know hip hop from the last fifteen or twenty years, you really need to bone up. Just as rockers go backwards to early blues and r & b, discovering how rock 'n' roll came to be, you owe it to yourself to do a bit of research. That is, unless you're just a casual listener. Then you just stick to your Auto-Tune saturated Spotify playlist and learn nothing.

If you are interested in soaking up some early hip hop, a good place to start is Beat Street, a 1984 film that, I just learned, had Harry Belafonte as one of the producers. This is early stuff with names some of you may not recognize. It's got Kool Moe Dee, Doug E. Fresh, Afrika Bambaataa and Melle Mel, but the reason I'm tuning in is that it has DJ Kool Herc in it. Herc was the man. He moved to New York from Jamaica, bringing with him the toasting over records style of DJing popularized by Jamaican sound systems at yard dances. Toasting, or deejaying as it's known in Jamaica, originated around 1970 (U Roy was the first to claim it as his meal ticket). It was 1973 when Herc first started using two turntables to extend breaks (sections of drum beats) and yelp, shout and rap over the music. That was pretty much the birth of rap/hip hop. Having an opportunity to see him back in the day is something I never thought I'd see. Oh, and we can't forget about break dancing. The film also has the Rock Steady Crew and NYC Breakers.

I went looking for some music to go with this and ran into Hip-Hop Radio Archives. Ho-ly shit. A whole bunch of radio shows dating back to 1983. Soup to nuts DJ-wise, from Afrika Bambaataa to Dr. Dre. The radio shows are searchable by name or year. On the site they're streaming, but there's a not-so-intuitive link you can click on to go to Internet Archive and download them. (Instructions below, with the link.)

LOCK DOWN THEATER NIGHT 43

This is perfect for the mood I'm in. A documentary about a recording studio, A studio where records I'm familiar with were recorded. I remember hearing about this film when it came out and thinking it would be neat to check out some time after the Dave Grohl is Everywhere fatigue had passed. It never really has. Grohl, who directed this, is just so...visible. I'm sure he's an alright guy. He is talented and prolific, but do I gotta encounter him every day? You see where I'm going.

I have a lot of respect for Grohl. He was in Nirvana. He's in a band with one of the Germs and that band has backed Paul McCartney. Those three things alone are reasons not to diss him out of hand. And I'm not dissing him at all. I'm just tired of him. I had my doubts about this one but I'm in the first ten minutes of it and kind of sucked in. Which is to say, it might be good. Hey, it is about a recording studio.

YOUR ENERGY LEVEL WILL CHANGE

I was checking to see what Peter Tibbles over at Time Goes By has been posting. He likes all sorts of stuff I've never given the time of day. Like, lets say, early Bing Crosby. On a post about long song intros, he had Crosby's "Try A Little Tenderness". After hearing that I went to the version I did know, Otis Redding's. In no time I first found myself stomping all over the kitchen while trying to make tacos. After I ate, I went looking for the version from the film Monterey Pop Festival. Though half of the song is a montage of hippie chicks, when it does go back to Redding the thing just explodes. This was the first soul footage I saw as a teen and just the second half of the song made a huge impression on me. Man, play this one loud.

LOCKDOWN THEATER NIGHT 42

I'd seen clips from this before not realizing they were all from a one hour TV special that aired on American television in 1957. The one clip I always went back to was Billie Holiday and Lester Young. I didn't know that it was the last time they saw each other. I also didn't realize that Gerry Mulligan and Jimmy Giuffre were in it, unusual because thy were in a later crowd and at the time, I think, they were primarily West coasters. Coleman Hawkins is in there too, and Thelonious Monk and Count Basie.

I came across this because there was a thing on TV (60 Minutes?) about a new film (or was it a streaming series?) about the FBI tracking Billie Holiday and trying to silence her because she refused to drop "Strange Fruit", a song about a lynching, from her set. Something like that. In the segment they showed a clip from this 1957 TV special and, yeah, I was off to dig. I just wanted to post this now before I forget to mention it.

There's a great write up at NPR about Holiday's performance on the show, the significance of some of things that might go unnoticed.
