ME GUSTA

Musica del Alma is back, and I am stoked to no end. Until a week of so ago, there had been no movement over there. A lesser blog would have been left for dead. But it had become a favorite of mine, so I kept checking back. It's not like there wasn't enough there to dig through for the last year and a half. It's chocked full of odd obscure Latin music, of all types; traditional, soul, funk, and rock, and just plain weird. The newest post is a mix, but there's some more action at the accompanying site, Discos Alma. Three mixes (so far) and a link to records for sale on ebay, all at set prices (that seem relatively fair) and most with long sound clips (wink wink nudge nudge).

Here's a few from Musica del Alma. They've all been posted before, but it'll give you an idea of what goes on over there.

ALL SCHOOLS JAM

Soul Sides just posted another cover of Fela Kuti's "Let's Start," so, of course, I had my cue to gather up a bunch of Afrobeat type stuff that's been waiting in the wings, and repost some that you may have missed.  I love this stuff.  It flat out jams.  I don't know what it is, but you either dig it or you don't, depending on what your appetite is for non-rock hot shit jams.

Visit the blogs that posted these, particularly American Athlete. They stopped posting there in November, so their links may be expired if you wait.  There's a lot of great stuff.  Don't veg.

COLOMBIAN FELA COVER. REALLY.

This is how things happen around here (again). Yesterday I was ran into a link to a cover of the Meters' "Sissy Strut." If you know the Meters, you know the song. It's been covered a lot. (Must've been the go-to cover back in the 70's.) The particular version I clicked on was done by Sunny & the Sunliners, a band that I was getting a fairly giddy about a few weeks ago. Needless to say, "Cissy Strut" + Sunny and the Sunliners = Get outta my way! Boy, was I lucky that the clicking finger had a light touch; because the host blog, Musica del Alma, is a really good one. I intend to be lurking around over there with regularity. Check it out. My spot check revealed some consistently good stuff. After just a quick look around, I found another neat cover, of Fela's "Let's Start," by a Colombian band called Phirpo y sus Caribes. Too good not to share. If I was you I'd just bookmark that site.
