THE DUDE FROM DEMON

A friend posted a Marc Bolan video today, a cover of Jody Reynolds's "Endless Sleep". Blech. I like TRex and Bolan as much as the next guy, but the dude can sure kill the vibe sometimes. I had to run to Reynold's version to detox. I needed that feel. It's funny, thinking about the Gun Club's cover of Reynolds's "Fire of Love", I don't recall recoiling from that. They retain the vibe. Bolan just does his boogie thing all over his cover. Ack!

TURN YOUR BRAIN OFF

I know what you could use. A little old school wildness, all scratchy and stuff, right? Before tonight, all of the songs below were unknown to me, but, oh man, do they hit the spot.. Particularly that first one, "Nameless" by the Rockin' Rs, for a good reason, and for that I must warn you. The record is scratched, but not to a distracting degree. Assuming that you're the type that likes the occasional scratch or pop because it makes it seems like you're listening to vinyl, you'll probably dig it, I do, a lot. A rockin' late fifties instrumental, with what is just about the perfect amount of tolerable wear, But here's were it gets sticky. It may have occurred to you, as it has to me, that, once these records have been digitally captured, theoretically the digital version will not degrade further. So what? I'll tell you what. I'm not sure if you've yet suffered from digital scratch guilt, but let me tell you what to look out for, Don't start asking questions like "Why do we like worn records in the first place?" Obviously, those of us with vinyl know that wear is a sign that the record has been played,, and presumably enjoyed, a lot. But it is also a reminder that any physical object is subject to wear, and is therefore temporary. Even the biggest boulder, the hardest diamond, will someday be dust, Maybe we like scratched records because we're reminded that they won't last forever, Maybe we should hang our heads in shame, that we enjoy listening to recordings of scratched records on a computer of all things, or worse, a phone. Okay, forget all of that, because you know what? This music wasn't made for worry warts,

LET'S WELCOME AGAIN,

Jody Reynolds has been here before, but it's been a while and seeing as how some of the old links are dead, I figured you could use another chance to familiarize yourself with the criminally overlooked singer. Reynolds was versatile, capable of almost Rick Nelson-like vocal stuff and some Duane Eddy type instrumentals (with guitar by his Storms band mate and future Wrecking Crew stalwart Al Casey). For many, though, Reynold's forte was the smoky proto-Cramps semi-creepy sounding stuff, and nowhere is that more evident than "Fire of Love," famously covered by the Gun Club (who put it on their second LP, after borrowing the title for their first LP) Ho, hum, you say, hot shot? Been there, done that? Despite your flippant know-it-all attitude, there's something down there for you too. A mix I practically tripped over, with Jody Reynolds kicking off a pretty good line up of others you probably have multiple copies of. Quit alphabetizing for a minute. Rock out.

YOU'RE MY LINER NOTE HERO

Al Casey: Guitar. That credit has been on hundreds of recordings, many of which you've heard. That photo up above is a young Casey in high school, a kid with a muffled confident smirk for good reason. He had already been playing pedal steel for over ten years, and it's not an easy instrument to play. With a start like that, playing a regular six string (that requires only the use of your hands, and not your feet and knees) must have been a cake walk. Within five years the whizz kid would be playing and co-writing with Duane Eddy. He dabbled in rockabilly, and later in surf-type instrumentals, and as a member of the Wrecking Crew played on recordings by the Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell, The Association, The Monkees, Johnny Cash, Eddy Arnold, Simon & Garfunkel, The 5th Dimension, Harry Nilsson, The Partridge Family, Frank Sinatra, and Nancy Sinatra. Look at the photo again. Doe it not look like he knows he's the shit?

THE STRYCHNINE'S ON ME GUYS

There are a handful of people that first sucked me into the can of worms that is music bloggery. The two biggees were a couple of folks who unknowingly tugged at my tired ass rock and roll heart stings, and convinced me that true believers still tangled. Every few days I could visit their space, and it was like my brother bringing home a thrift store score. That was roughly four or five years ago, and they're still my first two clicks when I start prowling.

These guys just kill it, consistently. This here is a bookmark alert. (If you don't bookmark them, there will always be links here in the "Get Lost" list.) Here they are: DJ Diddy Wah's Diddy Wah (an Australian ex-pat in the UK), and the Reverend Tom Frost's Spread the Good Word (from South of Hell, France).

Reverend Frost used to post a little more regularly, but he's now doing complete mixes, every few weeks. If you're leery of committing to a whole mix download, you shouldn't be. Trust me on this, there's nary a stinker in the bunch. He's also a musician, and there's a link below to a post with an mp3 of his two man project, the Bloody Tomahawks (as seen above), doing a cover of the Cramps' "Garbageman." If you dig that, there's a link or two to other places with samples (Facebook, etc.). It's good stuff.

Diddy Wah hits it just about every post. Usually just a song or two, but always worthy. A sampling is down below, but you really should just go there. The dude's been on a roll lately. His mixes are also dyn-o-mite.

HE DID THAT SONG?

Fu-huck. The past is littered with awesome yet somehow still ignored artists. Take Jody Reynolds for instance. You'd be hard pressed to find many in your circle of know-it-alls who are well acquainted with his work. I think I first heard him on Probe Is Turning-On the People, which is like a crap drawer full of semi-obscurites and oddball-ities, almost all worth a listen. There's very little text to read, so it's like a just-busted pinata spilling out thrift store records. (Or maybe I first heard him on "Spread the Good Word"...)

Where was I? Oh yeah, Jody Reynolds. Just listen to him on "Fire of Love". The guitar, if you can summon your imagination, sounds like Duane Eddy after Link Wray told him to slow it down. The vocals? Maybe a little tougher "Lonesome Town" Ricky Nelson. Confused? That's why: just listen. He does some upbeat stuff too, but early slower stuff does it for me.

After I initially heard him, I ran into a post on the Hound Blog. There's three respectable blogs right there that have posted "Fire of Love". Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban (by Debbie D) also posted it, and the recent posting at Diddy Wah makes five. All of them deserve a bookmark, trust me. And read the text at those sites, even the ones with just scraps. Jody Reynolds is really someone you should meet.
