HOW TO SELL SKATEBOARDS

Back in the dark ages before urethane wheels, fancy trucks and sealed bearings, skateboarders, as they were called back then, had a choice. Get a crap board with steel wheels, or get your head on straight, mow a lawn or two more, and shell out for a nicer one, one with clay wheels. In my crowd the grail was the laminated Hobie Super Surfer, ridden barefoot, with the scars to prove it. Once Cadillac Wheels came out, it was just get the fuck out of the way.

Skaterdater was the first skateboard film proper, from 1965, The soundtrack is a Mike Curb job, light surf, and a complete rip off of other instrumental bands, or at least most of it. One song features Davie Allan and the Arrows ("Skater Rock"). It's at Basic Hip Digital, a relatively new blog that has been posting an LP a day, all of them of the oddball thrift store find variety. The download links there are only good for two weeks, so if you're reading this on the day it was posted, you've got a couple days. If you're reading this beyond February 14, you can still hear it streaming (scroll down to "Day 32").

The photo at top has nothing to do with the film or the soundtrack, but it's Patti McGee who grew up surfing blocks from where I sit. She was the first women's National Skateboard Champion title holder. Guess what she rode? Yeah baby.

DUDE, WHERE'S YOUR BOOTS?

Man, do I miss the old days. I saw a group of bikers near the beach today. Bikers, as in the old school, greasy, dirt under the fingernails, chopper variety. Filthy leather vests, boots, all the gear that used to invite shakedowns from the man. They used to be crawling all over the place. Nowadays, the only "bikers" you see around here are more likely to be straight professional types playing dress up for the weekend. It was refreshing to see the old guard. I think I may have even muttered "fuck yeah".

As serendipity would have it, once I got home I ran into the theme from "The Born Losers" at On the Flip-Side. The combination of these two events had me jonesing for a biker flick, hokey as they can be. I hit paydirt, seven old school biker flicks at YouTube, a good ten hours of don't hassle me, man fun. And, if you still want more, check the sidebar over there, there's a bunch. Apparently that's where they all ended up once the drive-ins closed down. CAN I BUY A ROLL OF QUARTERS?

Here's a diversion. I was doing a search for a future post and I ran into a neat photo, which led to a site called the Selvedge Yard. I've been there before, and the site has a lot of good images and such, but does lay it on a bit thick at times with sharp looking icons. (There is beauty in the ugliness of ordinary. Let's not forget that.) The photo was of biker women, and it came from a 1965 photo collection of photos of the women of Hell's Angels. One particular image, not to go all male on you, is one of the stirring photos of a woman I've ever seen (detail above). I don't want to think too much about why, and I'm not going to get into what it stirs, because I don't rightly know. It has something to do with records. Not so much the physical appearance of the woman. Maybe it's the pose. Women who lay all over jukeboxes. Yeah, there's a new one for you.

It gave me an excuse to re-post the links to biker film soundtracks. These were originally posted about a year ago, so some of you may not have been here and haven't backtracked that far. There's a lot of gold in them there old posts.

NEW BLACK LIPS

Okay, Black Lip's latest, "Modern Art," warrants posting because it has some damn fine fuzz. Though criminally buried in the mix, the repetitive riff is reminiscent of the garage fuzz of yore. But rather than feature the fuzz big in parts and hardly at all in others (ala Count Five's "Psychotic Reactions"), the Black Lips (or whoever produced this) relegate it to a Davie Allan as rhythm player role. Sooo close. I'd love to take control of this band's mixing. "First off, turn up that bass, and the fuzz, now. And, for Christsakes, turn down the vocals, do something with the nasal, turn up the sneer. Okay, let's try that." All that said, it's a fine song.

I DON'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP

Needing an excuse to post links to some shit-hot instrumentals on a blog that I frequent, Diddy Wah, I came across a headline from the town I live in (Ocean Beach, which is in San Diego). The rollover teaser read "Woman assaulted with bongo drum in Ocean Beach". I knew the OB jokes were not far behind...and I was right. As I write this, if you search "bongo assault" on Google, three out of the top four results lead with "Only in OB", including one from a "legitimate" and lazy network affiliate. (While it might be expected, even humorous, for a blogger to lead with that, a "legitimate" news source? C'mon...)

Anyways, it reminded me that I had been meaning to post a link to DiddyWah's post with the Arrows' "Blues Theme" and "Bongo Party" (hence the weak tie-in, get it?). The Arrows are often referred to as Davie Allan and the Arrows, as he was the head Arrow, lead guitarist, and, above all, keeper of the fuzz. See, "Blues Theme" is not a blues song. It is from soundtrack of the biker-ploitation flick, Wild Angels and is the theme for Peter Fonda's character, Blue. And, in regards to fuzz, it's right up there with the Rock n' Roll Trio, the Beck-era Yardbirds, and the best of the garage bands: top shelf fuzz.

You ought to consider "Blues Theme" an essential download. It's like the "Johnny B. Goode" of fuzz, and it's got murdercycle sound effects to boot. And you should peruse and bookmark DiddyWah's blog. Another recent post had the seldom mentioned (and obscenely under appreciated), "Boss" by the Rumblers, another bona fide no-brainer. Unfortunately (and, in the interest of full disclosure), I gelled on posting a link to "Boss" before the link went dead. As consolation, here's a link to Boss Machine, by Jan Davis, a second tier Boss-related surf-type instrumental (but this one has, what must be, a Mustang for the token tough-guy sound effects). The A-side "Fugitive" in in an altogether different genre, that of the surf-type instrumental with hounds chasing a fugitive. One more before you go: it's not nearly as tough-guy as it's title, but Satan's Theme is just too B-movie-goofy of a name to not bury in a playlist.
