REPEAT WHEN NECESSARY

When I heard that Green Day was going to be on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, my thought was "They're finished. They've completed the cycle." It's been twenty years since their American Idiot LP came out and ever since I've been convinced that after dashing the thrift store threads of old and dressing a little more fancy, as if they had a stylist on their payroll, that they would get softer and eventually up just another rock band. I decided to tune in to the broadcast. American Idiot was their anti-Bush record. I had to check them to see if they still had the old school gumption. With trepidation I sat through a few bands that were anything but "rockin'". I have no particular allegiance with Green Day but I was hoping that they would at least play "American Idiot" if for no other reason than to remind American non-idiots that there's still work to be done. Then they came on. Not only did they open with "American Idiot", but to make it clear why they were playing it, they changed the line "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda" to "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda.". Not exactly a diatribe, but it restored a little faith. What I didn't expect is for the online reaction. A sample headline from Rolling Stone, "Trump Supporters Have a Meltdown After Green Day Slam 'MAGA Agenda' During New Year's Show". What were they expecting? When I read some of the online comments I was reminded why Trump supporters seem so clueless. Some were saying that punk rock was no place for politics. (Talk about a generation gap!!) Others, including Elon fucking Musk were calling them sell-outs. 

It's telling that the only place I was able to find a video of the whole performance is on Green Day's Instagram page. YouTube is full of clips but most have the click-whore story-repeaters' comments dubbed over it and the longest is just over a minute. It seems like we've already been through this: Fuck Donald Trump.

I'M SORRY, WE'RE OUT OF TIME

Man, Roxy Music just can't get a break around here. After constant detours, I was finally going to kick out a post about them, and just get it out of the way. But for the fourth or fifth time, I ended up somewhere completely different. Tonight it was going to start with "Editions of You" because it's early, relatively raw, and it pretty much rocks. Then it was going to be Mudhoney's cover of it (insane guitar on that one), and on to more Roxy Music from there. But I paused, thought about how "Editions of You" could very well be their "Rip This Joint", which is, of course, one of the most rocking songs the Stones ever did. Both songs are raw, and both with a nod towards fifties era rock 'n' roll, particularly the sax solos. Then I ended ended up watching a clip of Green Day doing "Rip This Joint" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which I hadn't seen before. Or at least remember seeing. It's tight, but all I could think was "they better have a sax solo". They did. And now I'm no longer thinking about Roxy Music. That's how that happens.

LOOK AT ME WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU!

Dear Teenagers,

These songs are by the Foxboro Hot Tubs. The Foxboro Hot Tubs might sound a little familiar because the five man band includes all three members of Green Day, that band you thought were "punk rock". They sound a little different though, because in this side project, they play music that is not unlike the ditties your grandparents use to listen to. And the bands back then had funny names too, just like your punk rock favorites. Crazy names like the Who, the Kinks, the Monkees and the Byrds; even the Chocolate Watch Band!

Imagine all the fun the Foxboro Hot Tubs had making music for old farts! And playing mysteriouso too, since there aren't credits on their crazy CD cover (that looks like a record cover!). You know what you should do? (Look at me when I'm talking to you!) You should put off getting that next funny haircut, put the tough guy routine on hold, and ask your grandparents to play you some of the music from the 60's. You might find a thread that leads you right back to these nuts!
