FLIMSY EXCUSE TO REPOST THE STOOGES #346

Okay, so there's a couple women that moved in across the alley from me about a year ago. I became alley friends with them shortly after they moved in. Alleys do that. A few weeks after I'd met them one was wearing a Germs T-shirt that was based on artwork that Shawn Kerri, a long lost friend of mine, had done (she also did that Circle Jerks skanking kid artwork back in the day). I commented on her shirt and came to find out that she had a pretty respectable knowledge of old school punk. This was surprising because, other than the T-shirt, she exhibited none of the cliche punk look. No leather, no black, no boots, no crazy hair, no excessive tattoos or piercings.It was unusual because younger people into punk rock seem to be the ones that looked like they just stepped out of Hot Topic (she's in her late twenties or early thirties, young compared to me). It was encouraging to meet someone who didn't feel the need to wear a uniform. That part of punk rock seemed to vanish as soon as hardcore hit.

Today I'm out in the alley and she was taking out the trash. I asked her what T-shirt she was wearing today, in case it was another punk shirt.  I do that from time to time. She turned around and I saw "The Stooges". When she moved her arms away, it said "Funhouse". I was floored. It's not just my favorite Stooges album, it's one of my all time favorites of any genre. And here's someone that young that's into it. After a short excited conversation I came away thinking, you know, shit ain't so bad.

Here in the U.S. it's Labor Day weekend. Monday is Labor day, a holiday for, ahem, workers, of which I'm one and have been my since I first started mowing lawns at the age of ten. Hell yeah, a day off for workers, I'll take it. I deserve a day off. So, in the interest of that, I'm going to lean on The New Yorker of all sources. In the newest issue there's a long profile of Iggy Pop and it's good reading. Much of it will be familiar to most of you, but there are enough tidbits sprinkled throughout to make it interesting. For those of you not familiar with Pop, or his late sixties band the Stooges, I'm reposting a bunch of songs that I just posted back in April. Consider them essential, a counterpoint to all of the flower power stuff that was going on out west and a precursor to punk rock. I really hope that last sentence wasn't necessary.

THE STOOGES EXCUSE

Hey, it's Friday. I really don't feel like running around looking for something. The first thing that came to mind was the Stooges and when I checked the links on old posts I found that most were dead. I couldn't let that go. The Stooges need to be represented here and although I know many of you have their essential stuff (the first three LPs), some of you rug biters don't have a clue. No sense trying to figure out how some young hipster would respond to the Stooges, particularly because I don't care for hipsters of any age. Let's just say that the first three Stooges LPs, The Stooges, Fun House and Raw Power, are about as essential as it gets. Iggy's old now, and really hasn't been vital in a long time, blah, blah, blah. Shit, just take it from me, get those LPs.

YOUR PASSPORT TO JAZZ

I got kind of freaked out a couple of hours ago. After watching a live video of the reformed Stooges (semi-recent stuff with Mike Watt on bass and James Williamson on guitar), I was thinking about doing yet another Stooges thing. Then I started thinking that they were like Chuck Berry to many of us, that familiar. almost too familiar. Here's where it gets hairy. I thought "Oh shit, there are probably kids out there, coming off like musical know-it-alls in their particular crowds, that don't have the slightest idea who Chuck Berry is." I had to calm myself, and that meant backtracking to my state prior to that perilous thought. So, Stooges it was.

I'm glad I did, because otherwise I wouldn't have revisited "Funhouse", the song from the album of the same name. A couple minutes into it it occurred to me that it's essentially loud, jerky, funky, jazz. You should check it out again, especially those of you who like the Stooges, but won't set a foot near jazz, What the fuck are you afraid of anyway? Some of it is crazier than anything from your safe harbor collection, Listen to that song, "Funhouse", particularly Ron Asheton's guitar, and keep in mind that he was a John Coltrane fiend, Steve McKay's sax is also worth isolating. After that, check that Eric Dolphy cut. They don't sound anything alike, but there is something that connects them. It's that "I know what I'm playing, I hope you know what you're playing. Meet you back here in a minute" thing.

If you don't even know the Stooges, for God's sake, would you catch up already? There's a couple of their popular favorites down there, and a lot more in older posts.

YARDBIRDS? NEVER HEARD OF 'EM.

Something funny is going on here. It's not unusual to borrow a guitar part here or there. That's how music evolves. But when a band borrows from another particular band twice in the same recording session, you gotta figure something's going on, even if not intentionally. The Yardbirds songs below were recorded in 1965 ("I'm Not Talkin'") and, I think, 1967 (Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"). The Iggy and the Stooges cuts were recorded around 1972. In London. Come to your own conclusions. Any way you look at it, whether it was intentional or coincidental, it's interesting. 

"I Gotta Right" and "I'm Not Talkin'" just share the first few bars, that's it. But "I'm Sick of You" and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" (I hate that title) share a significant guitar part. In "I'm Sick of You" it comes at 2:35, in "Happenings..." it's at :46. (That one was pointed out in a review I read years ago, either in Slash or Back Door Man.)

CODDLING'S DEAD

I've got a lot of respect for Iggy Pop. He's made a career out of stirring things up, and he's put out some good records. But you know what? I'm thinking it may be time to close the book on him, or at least any notion that a reformed Stooges in any incarnation is going to be something relevant to pissing off parents. I gave the last one, The Weirdness, a shot when it came out in 2007. It had Ron Ashton on guitar, who was the guitarist on the first two Stooges LPs, the 1969 self titled debut, and Funhouse in 1970. Unfortunately, The Weirdness was not the awesomeness. It sucked. I got rid of it after a couple listens. Now they're back, with James Williamson on guitar. He was the guitarist on the third LP, Raw Power, released in 1973 (and credited to Iggy and the Stooges). Raw Power was a fine LP,  albeit a little less challenging than the first two. Still, I was hoping for the best. I've only heard one song from the new incarnation (the LP isn't due out for weeks), and it's not bad. It does have a little punch. But at the end of the day, it just doesn't grab me like, say, "T.V. Eye". Here's the thing, they sound like a really great rock 'n' roll band, as good as any. But really good rock 'n' roll bands are a dime a dozen. Gimme danger...(No, that's just fucking wrong. That was so bad. Cheap. I feel filthy. That gimme danger thing was blogger two-word-zinger douchery at it's worst. "L.A. Blues" ought to take care of that.)

RAH, RAH, SISS BOOM WTF

Me love Stooges long time. But, not enough to have heard everything, read everything, or seen everything. So the chance viewing of a few photos (on Dangerouse Minds) sent me on a "let's see what else is out there?" dumpster dive. The photos that were posted were the Stooges playing in a high school gymnasium, in 1970, during the short period that the were a five piece. There they are, in all their glory, with score boards and basketball hoops in the background. I thought it funny. (Links to photos below.)

Among the songs down there are some Fun House alternate takes (from the "1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions" way-expanded edition). There's also three mixes of "Search and Destroy," the original stereo, the '97 Iggy Pop remix, and a mono mix of the original. (Yeah, like AM radio is going to come calling.)
