PASSING THE TORCH LIKE A HOT POTATO

Here's a good juxtaposition. Robert Johnson's "Preachin' Blues" covered by the Gun Club as "Preaching the Blues". The Gun Club (above) were an L.A. band made up of off-duty members of the punk scene. They rip the shit out of the song. (Before anybody gets a fact checker hard on, I know Johnson didn't write it and I'm not even sure his version was the first.) After hearing the Gun Club I got distracted and when I get distracted, I relish it as an excuse to bale. So, wrapping things up, as a chaser there's Beehive and the Barracudas' cover of the Gun Club's "Sex Beat".

MADE IN SAN DIEGO

If you have never heard Beehive and the Barracudas, consider yourself fortunate. You can listen to these three and be objective. And don't ruin it by heading over to YouTube just yet. First, listen to the songs down there. Make up your mind and decide if they are worthy of attention or not, without all that other useless information. It's music. All that other stuff isn't supposed to matter.

FRIDAY FUN TIME

After hearing the Q65 cover of "Get Out of My Life" and Christopher and the Souls' "Diamonds, Rat's and Gum", Beehive and the Barracudas' cover of the Gun Club's "Sex Beat" is a perfect chaser. Don't ask me why. It just sounded good tonight. I'm sure the thud of the drums has more than a little to do with it. If you too like that sort of thing, this will have you banging on anything within arms reach.

PLASTIC SOUL ROCK 'N' ROLL

Rare is the band that seems to coalesce around a who gives a shit? attitude so much that it makes the whole band/audience dynamic irrelevant. In that way, Beehive and the Barracudas pretty much rule. They have an air of audience as band, straddling the line between fuck it all side band and raw rock 'n' roll genius. These are the guys who were fucking around in the garage while the hipsters were out shopping. I love how they're recorded. Enough is enough, song done, on to the next one. Nothing's overdone, nothing's pandering, just some cardboard sounding drums, weird riffs, and lyrics that let you discern what the hell they're getting at. The first one below the video is a Gun Club cover. I like it much.
