BROTHER BOOGIE

The weekly Saturday Night Fish Fry radio show on the local jazz station is a total gas. All old school jump blues and early rhythm and blues, hosted by Billy Vera, who some of you might remember from his band Billy Vera and the Beaters (who are not at all like his radio show). Regardless of what type of music his band played, he knows R&B. He knows names, record release dates, gig notes and all sorts of trivia. It comes on from 6:00-8:00 Saturday evenings, perfect for after beach putzing around. It's like you've got a buddy in the living room spinning the wax while you man the burritos.

One song Vera plays a lot is "Drunk" by Jimmy Liggins (above). Man, I dig that song. Years ago I was a pretty heavy drinker, so I get it. It's been decades since I've been shitfaced drunk, but this song makes it seem like yesterday. One thing Vera mentioned on the show is that Jimmy Liggins had a brother, Joe (below), also a singer. So here's a couple from each of them. You Don and Dewey fans will recognize "Pink Champagne".

One last thing, I just checked and there's a bunch of Vera's shows that you can stream on the radio station's web site. But really, a transistor radio is the way to go.

ROBERTA'S STOKED

A couple of days ago I was listening to the jazz station, a weekly show called Saturday Night Fish Fry. If you know the song of the same name by Louis Jordan, you'd probably guess that the show featured jump blues and you'd be right. Also mixed in is pre-rock 'n' roll rhythm and blues. Good shit. The show is only a couple hours long and nearly every week I cut out early to post something else. Not this week. Fuggit, I thought. I was going to listen to the whole thing. What good is posting music if you don't allow yourself the time to actually listen undistracted? So I had me a rhythm and blues binge for the past two days and did little more than scratch the surface. Thought I might drag you along with me.

I was wondering why I hadn't heard of Tiny Topsy. She's my type of fifties, a throaty rhythm and blues singer not unlike Big Mama Thornton or Big Maybelle. One who really belts a song. So, I did some digging. She died at the age of 34 having only recorded nine singles. That explains why I've never run across her. The silver lining, if there is one, is being able to fit her entire recorded output on one compilation. Here's a few, including her radical reworking of Rosco Gordon's "Just A Little Bit". I have digging to do.

Here's a couple by Big Maybelle. "That's a Pretty Good Love" is awesome. In a moment that would have made my late brother Tim proud, I correctly identified the guitar player as Mickey Baker. Tim's the only one I know that would have appreciated that. We never discussed Baker back when he was alive, we'd never heard of him. But I know if he were still here, he'd have found Mickey Baker and he would have been impressed that I was able to ID the licks. Damn, I miss him.

SO THAT'S WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE

I haven't really run out of bands, but I find myself going back to songs that were overplayed when they were hits to the extent that I've never actually bothered to really listen to them. Today there's a fire burning about forty miles south east of me. Ashes are falling all the way out here on the coast (I'm in San Diego). I was trying to think of a song to post, so when I noticed the ashes and was told about the fire, I thought, what about a fire related song? The first one that came to mind was Hendrix's "Fire", followed immediately by the Ohio Players' "Fire" which I hadn't heard in years. So that's the one I went to, to really listen to it. In doing so, I ran across "Love Rollercoaster" a badass jam in and of itself.

This should kill more than a few hours. These were first posted here five years ago, but it's worth a bookmark, especially not knowing how long the stay at home orders last. Without just repeating what was said when I first posted these, I'm just slapping a new title on the post. Here's what I said back then:

Dude looks pretty square doesn't he? Assuming you don't know who Hoss Allen is, if someone were to tell you that he hosted a syndicated TV show you'd probably think it would be fairly tepid, right? Wrong. He hosted The !!!! Beat, a 1966 music series with insanely solid line-ups of soul, R & B and blues artists all performing in the studio, most in front of a live band. The list of performers includes (prepare to drool here) Etta James, the Bar Kays, Louis Jordan, Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Freddie King, Willie Mitchell, Barbara Lynn, Sam and Dave, the Mighty Hannibal, Joe Tex, and on and on. Yeah, budget a night or two, get a six pack, and for fuck sake, turn off that phone.

THE MAN WITH THE HALFTONE HEAD

Last night while fiddle farting around I was listening to Saturday Night Fish Fry, a rhythm and blues radio show that just plain kicks ass. I've probably mentioned it before. If you like rhythm and blues, jump blues, and that type of stuff, primarily from the forties and fifties there's a link below (they stream the show online). That lead to an r&b dig, and I was reminded of this cheapo 10 CD Rhythm and Blues set with a couple hundred cuts. There are partial song samples posted at Internet Archive, but the set is so damn cheap (about $20 U.S.) that if you're into that type of music you really ought to shell out some of your fancy beer money. It's a no frills set with no liner notes, just song titles and artists, and it's got about the most generic name possible, Rhythm and Blues, so it can be hard to find. (Just search the "ASIN# B000AAP7IU" and it'll pop up.)

My aim was to post some Amos Milburn, the first artist on the first disc of that box set, and take if from there. I instead settled on Roy Milton because his stuff was easy to find, surprisingly easy. Following Milton I was off to the races, so Milton is what you get. I checked out and finished the night flat out fucking around while listening to about third of that set. Baby. I just can't stop.

SHOOP SHOOP OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

How could I not have posted Betty Everett yet? Not that I'm all that familiar with more than just a fraction of her output, but still. I'd heard  "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" a thousand times when I saw the movie Exposed and that was at least twenty years ago. The film starred Nastassja Kinski and I had it bad for her after seeing Cat People. Big ol' movie star crush. In the film she's alone in her apartment and plays that song, doing a crazy dance that I haven't been able to disassociate with that song ever since. Shit, now that I think about it, I had the song on a Charly Records compilation and used to spin it occasionally when DJing. So, yeah, oversight.

Everett's music was seemingly made for those Northern soul all-nighters. That kind of soul that isn't Aretha, but it's not the Supremes either; it's somewhere in the middle. Sixties soul was like that. Just like all sorts of lesser known surf bands, rockabilly singers, garage bands and punk bands, once the genre was identified, there was just shitloads of lesser known records that weren't exactly copycats, but sure did benefit from the artists that were leading the pack. Check out Everett's version of "Hound Dog". It's apparent that just about any song can be made in a Northern soul vein. As an added bonus, check Merry Clayton's version of "Shoop.." released in 1963, a year earlier. I actually like it more then Everett's. Not quite as slick sounding. And it has a whole lotta cowbell.

HONK AND GRIND, SPILL YOUR HAMMS

A couple more here from Big Jay McNeely, one of the finest honkers to ever pick up a saxophone. There are more technically proficient sax players, more innovative and so forth, but McNeely just flat out wailed. Check out the songs on this post for some examples of that. He also excelled at strip tease type instrumentals. Here's a couple of them and surprisingly "Strip Tease Swing" isn't even the best of the two. Though I've only heard a fraction of McNeely's output, I can't imagine anything surpassing his cover of "Night Train" for backing the bump and grind. Amazing that it was recorded in 1984, right about when metal invaded the strip clubs (as I've been told...). What a damn trouper, keeping that tassle twirlin' torch lit. Fuck that "Cherry Pie" shit.

NOT A PARTY 'TIL I GET THERE

A nutty album title and timeless cover art (as in unable to date design-wise), and I'm finally introduced to Thundercat, which will no doubt cause some of you to mutter "what took ya so long?" Here's the deal, I don't follow charts and I read very little about current music. There's so much good music that's been made in the past that I'll never catch up, and I really don't give a shit about being relevant to anything let alone current musical trends. Never forget, current musical trends gave us auto-tune, metal ballads, pop-punk, new wave and all sorts of total crap that followers follow. If the good shit is out there, it'll find it's way to me eventually.

In the case of Thundercat, the cover of his 2017 LP Drunk just sort of stared at me from the side bar of Discogs when I was looking for something else. The cover looked kind of seventies-ish and the name Thundercat seemed vaguely familiiar. There was a link to a video, and I bit. Good click there. "Them Changes", the music was good in a lightly funky soul way, like the album cover hard to peg in terms of when it was made. The video itself was trippy. Bang.

The more I listened to his stuff, the more he sounded like the Bill Withers meets Brian Wilson. Make that Bill Withers meets Brian Wilson and they both get stoned as shit. I don't really care what this music is classified as, it's interesting and nice to fill the air with. If it keeps my interest, why bother over analyzing it?

EPIC JAM FROM THIS LADY

I don't know how much Esther Phillips you've heard. I've heard only a fraction of her stuff.  Pretty stupid considering I've liked just about everything I've heard of hers, spanning decades. I've heard early r&b stuff, northern soul type stuff and blues. Somehow I never ran across a 1971 cover of Gil Scott Heron's "Home Is Where the Hatred Is". Man, it's intense, lyrically and musically. The instrumentation is insane, all the shit that's going on, yet it still sounds spare. Listen to "Mojo Hannah" first, and then "Home Is Where the Hatred Is". Only seven years separate those two songs. Oh shit, here goes.

INNUENDOS? WHATEVER FOR?

It happened again. I was looking for something entirely different, Big Youth to be exact, and got sidetracked by Lavern Baker. The happened again part wasn't getting sidetracked. It was seizing the opportunity to, at the mere mention of Lavern Baker's name, succumb to the force that is "Better Think Twice", more precisely, "Better Think Twice (Version X)", a duet with Jackie Wilson. Pardon me if you've heard it before, here or somewhere else. I've posted about four times over the years, but I always accompany it with something I haven't posted. I should have known something was up. All of a sudden a Big Jay McNeely post was getting all sorts of hits. The post was from a year and a half ago, when he was still alive. Then it hit me, the reason for the hits. Sure as shit, McNeely had passed, back in September. Why the fuck didn't I hear about it? McNeely was the epitome of honking r&b sax. Crazy, wild and everything in between. He died and I didn't hear a peep about it. What a sorry fucking world this is.

Ahh, that fertile period when rhythm and blues was being pilfered for rock 'n' roll. How many early rockers gave proper credit to the original artists? How many introduced a song "Now were gonna do a song from a record by Tiny Bradshaw, who really is sumpin', you should check him out."? Uh, none. Or even "Paul here is going to knock it out with a killer guitar tone which is really the thing that makes it all okay for you crazy white kids to get off on it" for that matter? Oh man, this was bad news. This morning while driving I heard that Aretha Franklin was "gravely ill". As details seeped in during the day, reports that she may have cancer and had not publicized her diagnosis. More reports that family members had gathered at her bedside. Whatever, it doesn't sound good. So, if you're religious, say a prayer. If you're a hippie or something, send good vibes. Thoughts, prayers, vibes,...shit, raise a glass in some dank bar. At least pause and reflect on her immense talent, her nearly spotless track record, and her longevity. Many of you may have taken her for granted. Fuck, she is an American treasure with no asterisk. Those of you of a certain age know why she is the queen. It occurred to me today that some of you younger people might not have a clue. I suggest you get yourself a "Best of" at the very least. To not know Aretha Franklin is to not know music, regardless of your preferred genre.

I ran into P.J. on my way home from the beach today. He's a good friend, like family, my brother's old roommate, and the only non-family member ever presented a key to my Mom's house by my Mom. He's also a drummer and the guy who told me to listen to The Ultimate Elvin Jones. He was listening to music on headphones today and when I asked what he was listening to; he said it was the jazz station. I asked him what his favorite show was, because sometimes it can get lame (newish borderline smooth jazz). He said his favorite was Saturday Night Fish Fry. Hell yeah. Big Jay McNeely was the shit, the epitome of a honker, just pure unadulterated blasts. Providing exactly what the songs needed. Distilled down to the basics and there for a reason, to take a song to the next rambunctious level. The intent was clear. You just have to see a handful of his titles to see where he was coming from. Don and Dewey again. As if I have to give a reason. You know as well as I do that they are criminally under-recognized. If you don't know them, it proves my point. They're the package. Both possess gravel ridden pipes and both play multiple instruments (violin/guitar and keyboards/guitar respectively). They are to the Righteous Brothers what Little Richard was to Pat Boone. The wild and crazy OGs vs light weight blue eyed shit.

To try to stretch out, I went looking a little further for stuff than I have in the past. The first few down are the no-brainers. They should be considered absolutely essential if you ever hope to experience something beyond American Graffiti level oldies. The other stuff is lesser known. Man, though, for a duo that are as unknown as they are, they sure recorded a lot together. Check their discography. (Dig the entry from '64, Don and Dewey and Larry (Williams) and Johnny ("Guitar" Watson)! Holy fuckin' Wilburys, Batman!

WANTED: BAD HAIR DAY

I have to admit, I have an aversion to clean cuts. It's not hard and fast, but from time to time I notice myself backing away from objectivity. If a singer is too clean cut, I may not give him an entirely fair shake. Like this guy, Nick Waterhouse. He's a perfectly fine r&b singer, old school in practice, totally clean cut 60s Ivy League in appearance, not a hair out of place. I really dig his music, and by extension his mission to keep this type of music alive. I just wish he'd lose the comb at some point.
