THEY WILL NOT GO QUIETLY

It's that time. Here's all of Rev Tom Frost's Bloody Halloween mixes. Every year, a grand Halloween lazy night repost cop out. I'd imagine there are a few of you who haven't heard any of them. If you're unfamiliar with Reverend, there's bits and pieces in these past posts.

The mixes (25 of them!) are only available streaming, but by now most of you have the gizmo arsenal required to blast them at a party.

And don't forget, the Frosty one is a kick ass musician himself. Ask your local Mr. Record Store Man to put the Reverend's goods in their racks. While you wait, buy his shit at Bandcamp.

MUSIC FOR ROMAN HANDS

Photo found by Pea Hix
Well, today I did what I wished someone had done for me when I needed it. During the course of the day I reminded a half dozen guys that it was Valentines Day and they better get their squeeze something or suffer the consequences. While flowers or candy (or booze, if I know my demographic) might do it, what to do once you've handed over the goods? Try putting one of Reverend Tom Frost's Bloody Love mixes. Three different mixes of vintage make out soundtracks, roughly three hours worth. That's enough time for you to git down and have a post-coital smoke. Seal the deal with Ronnie Self's "You're So Right For Me".

SOUNDS FROM SOUTH OF HELL

Okay you party planners, you've got your work cut out for you. You've got less than a week until your Halloween shindig. If you're in need of a soundtrack to all of your hijinks, that part of your to-do list is about to be taken care of. Reverend Tom Frost, the former host of Spread the Good Word, and a damn fine musician in his own rite, is keeping the tradition alive. Every year he puts together a Halloween mix or two, and this year he's posted his twentieth. I know, one mix might just get you through a an hour or two. Fear not, all twenty mixes are online, so you're covered. If you dig oddball, raunchy, creepy, swinging, reverb drenched and rockin' sounds, you needn't go further. The Reverend's Halloween mixes are the standard by which all others are judged, (The mixes are now posted at Mixcloud, and are streaming.)

Reverend Frost is no slouch, his own music is good stuff as well. Gravelly, roots type stuff, loosely drawn from surf, rockabilly, and country, with some reverb and distortion to taste. Check the links below the mixes. It's some dynamic sounds, man.

HIGH SEASON SOUTH OF HELL

Holy shit, it's Saturday night on Halloween weekend! I might be too late, but if your party ain't in high gear, or you're one of the brave souls that rips it up on Sunday or Monday nights, mornings be damned, here's the annual posting of Reverend Tom Frost's Bloody Halloween Mixes, twenty of them. That's right, twenty. If you stream them back to back their good for almost a solid day of ghoulish misbehavior. Do it up right. Make a mess.

SOUTH OF HELL'S FINEST

You people that really get into Halloween might already be on the party train. Some of you may be doing it big tomorrow night. Either way, here's the traditional annual posting of the infamous Bloody Halloween mixes, posted by the late great Spread the Good Word. To make a very long story short, Reverend Tom Frost, the host of said blog, stopped posting regularly a few years ago, but true to his word, he's left his mixes up, now hosted at MixCloud. They're not available as downloads as they were when originally posted, but you resourceful types will either figure out a workaround or just blast them from you fancy phone plugged into something loud. Twenty mixes, that's enough to keep that party going all weekend.

When Frost stopped updating his blog, it was to concentrate on his own music which, believe me, is worth checking out. Top notch South of Hellabilly. Just listen to "Malaguena" (mp3 near the bottom below) and see if you can just go about your business. Get your goosebumps on.

YOU TOO LOVERBOY

I can't even believe I'm paying attention enough to remember what you had better remember. That is, if you're in a relationship, be it married, dating, or doing whatever the hell it is those guys who are always back from lunch late do. It's next Friday you dolt. Look at the calender. You've got a week left. I'm not one for giving advice on this topic. If romancing was a sport where you advance to different levels respective of your performance, let's say like baseball, you've got the major leagues, and way out there, way out past the parking lot, there's me. Playing Wiffle ball. So, no advice. I'm just throwing this out there as a public service. Grab, or at least bookmark, the Bloody Love Mix, Part 3 at Spread the Good Word. Do I have to spell it out for you? It's the back up plan, and it's a good mix to boot, low on schmaltz. Thank Rev. Tom Frost. Again. Long after his site went dormant, the lights are still on. It bears mentioning that he stopped updating the site to concentrate on his own music, which you should totally check out. If you're hanging around here with any amount of regularity, our tastes intersect somewhere, as mine do with Reverend Frost's, ergo, you will dig his shit.

Note: Once you get to Rapidshare, look for the bar that says "to download", then on the next page select the box next to the mix and click on "download selection": You do not have to register. I repeat, you do not have to register. Ignore that window when it comes up and a few seconds later, the download will start. Got that?

HE'S NOT THROUGH YET

It's only appropriate that we close this barrage of Halloween posts with a new mix by Reverend Tom Frost, the oft mentioned former host of Spread the Good Word. The periodical corresponding with him over the course of the last several years has restored in me the faith that true believers still tangle. The fact that he is a performing and recording musician takes the sting out of the lack of updates at his old site. But he never really shut the door. His mixes are still up, and after I posted links to his first seventeen Bloody Halloween Mixes a few days ago, he reared his bloody head again, hepping me to his new Bloody Halloween mix, this one the nineteenth. I'd been saving his secret eighteenth mix from last year for my last Halloween post, but now some double dipping is in order. So dig these, and by all means, check the good Reverend's own music.

THAT TIME AGAIN

Good ol' Reverend Tom Frost is a man of his word. He stopped updating his blog a couple years ago to concentrate on his music, but for several years before that, Spread the Good Word was a favorite around here. The selections he posted were always worth listening to, and and they were varied. It was his back to back posting of Mahalia Jackson and Anti-Nowhere League that got my attention. That was three days into this whole quixotic mess, six years ago. When he stopped updating his blog, he said that he'd leave his mixes up for the unforeseen future, and he has. So here's seventeen of his Bloody Halloween Mixes. That's right, seventeen. These suckers should take you all the way through party night. Each is linked separately, because you'll want the song lists. I won't go into what's on each, just look at a couple, they're packed with goodies.

Rev Frost is still doing his own music, which is damn fine in and of itself. There's a link to the his site down there. Check out the "More samples..." link. If "The Naked Witch" and "Whoopee" don't make you want to investigate, just get out of the way.

THE REVEREND DELIVERS

Reverend Tom Frost, musician, blog man and nice guy, from South of Hell, France, used to run Spread the Good Word. He bid adieu to the blog while back, but pops his head up every so often, re-upping a mix here or there. I'm getting spoiled, I've come to expect these incidents, but that's not to say that I take them for granted. Everything this guy has his toe in merits attention, whether it's his mixes or his own music

For me, the ultimate litmus test for music, really good music is whether or not my late twin brother Tim would like it. Our tastes in music were very similar, and we functioned as final filters for each other. I'll give you an example: the Challengers. They were a surf band not unlike the Chantays, Surfaris, Bel-Airs, Lively Ones, or any other faceless surf band. Or so I used to think. Nothing ever indicated anything to the contrary, not that I was exposed to anyway, until Tim deemed them dodes, a derogatory term I still don't know the meaning of. All I knew, and still know, is that the Challengers are out. But Tim would have dug these mixes, and probably have knocked back a few with the Reverend if he ever had the chance. That's a long winded way of saying that I consider the Reverend part of an extended family. And his mixes are always top shelf.

R.I.P. SPREAD THE GOOD WORD

Holy hell, Reverend Tom Frost, purveyor of good shit, is hanging up his blog, Spread the Good Word. If you've hung around here enough, you know that he's unequivocally in with this out crowd. He began posting single songs in 2004 and later added mixes, all showing his impeccable taste, the sort of which that if you didn't recognize the artist's name, you clicked anyway, because it passed his muster. His was one of the first blogs I linked to, appearing on my radar after posting Mahalia Jackson and the Anti-Nowhere League back to back. Along with just a few others, he's what got me into this mess. The big difference is that he offered encouragement, which was always welcomed.

He's posted one final mix, and it's a eighty minute doozy. This one has Bernard Herrmann, Hank Mizell, Hershell Gordon Lewis and the Amazing Pink Holes, Bunker Hill, Ronnie Dawson, Ennio Morricone, Cozy Cole, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Captain Beefheart, the Tornadoes, Roy Acuff, Otis Blackwell, Joe Clay, Jackie Wilson, and Eddie Cochran, along with sixteen others that I didn't even recognize. And those sixteen unfamiliar artists are the draw, that's where want lists are born. He's leaving all of his mixes up for now, but I'd do some digging stat, because you never know when the lights will go out.

He's checking out to devote more time to his own music, and he's no slouch with that either. A lazy comparison would be Tom Waits, but the Reverend has his own brand of swing. Good stuff, Maynard, as they say. If'n I was you, I'd bookmark his site, buy his music and become a pest over there.

RENE SAYS "DIG THESE BABY"

Checking in on some favorites today, I figured it was time for another plug for a couple guys I owe big time. Two of the first blogs I linked to several years ago, and remain in the regular rotation, are Diddy Wah, a blog by the DJ of the same name, and Spread the Good Word, the haunt of Reverend Tom Frost, a musician from France. Both of their tastes very similar to mine, at least in older stuff, which is what they post. Theirs is meat and potatoes stuff. Rock 'n' roll, instrumental, rockabilly, rhythm and blues, and the gray area between them. Actually, meat and potatoes would be selling them short. It's more like air and water, that essential, and vegan friendly.

Diddy Wah recently posted a fantastic song, "Bullfrog," by Johnny Moore and His New Blazers. It is an instrumental, featuring Rene Hall on guitar. He also played the guitar on Ritchie Valens's "La Bamba," Chan Romero's "Hippy Hippy Shake" (whoa, dad!) and Larry Williams's "Dizzy Miss Lizzy." That alone should get your attention. The song also features legendary drummer Earl Palmer, who is held high regard at Diddy Wah, for good reason. Everything that he's posted with Earl Palmer on it has been an instant right click freakout. (He's going on a vacation for a couple weeks, so spend some time going through his old stuff. It's a worthy dig.)

Reverend Frost will pop up occasionally at his place, and post a themed mix, and they're always good. His latest is "A Bloody Western Mix," posted in March. He used to post more often, but he's spending more time now doing his own music, which is fine by me, because his music is damn good. If you doubt my objectivity, listen for yourself. He's got five songs streaming. Start with the top two, from his just released new album. I think you'll agree, some duly crazy shit here. As my brother would say, "This is a good one. You should buy it."

DIDN'T WE JUST DO THIS?

Here they come folks, as dependable as cheese balls, sugar ODs, and heavy drinking, the consolatory holiday mixes. For those with at least a toe in the humbug pool, these mixes have the stuff that will make forget what a crass, phony, consumer driven holiday that Christmas is. Holy crap. This is the way that you celebrate the birthday of your deity? Yeah, okay, pass the bottle.

So, here's Spread The Good Word's Reverend Tom Frost's Bloody Holiday Mixes. Tons of mixed up stuff: James Brown, the Ventures, Hank Snow, Davie Allan,...all sorts of stuff that will have you smiling while you're digging for toothpicks. (Check the song lists.) There's a few songs from other sites too, for those of you who don't feel like diving into mixes.

In case I don't get around to my normal long winded bullshitting tonight, here's more than enough to keep you busy; a link to sixteen, count 'em sixteen, Halloween mixes from Reverend Frost of Spread the Good Word. Those of you who hang around here enough already know that anything he puts his stink on is held in high regard. THE STRYCHNINE'S ON ME GUYS

There are a handful of people that first sucked me into the can of worms that is music bloggery. The two biggees were a couple of folks who unknowingly tugged at my tired ass rock and roll heart stings, and convinced me that true believers still tangled. Every few days I could visit their space, and it was like my brother bringing home a thrift store score. That was roughly four or five years ago, and they're still my first two clicks when I start prowling.

These guys just kill it, consistently. This here is a bookmark alert. (If you don't bookmark them, there will always be links here in the "Get Lost" list.) Here they are: DJ Diddy Wah's Diddy Wah (an Australian ex-pat in the UK), and the Reverend Tom Frost's Spread the Good Word (from South of Hell, France).

Reverend Frost used to post a little more regularly, but he's now doing complete mixes, every few weeks. If you're leery of committing to a whole mix download, you shouldn't be. Trust me on this, there's nary a stinker in the bunch. He's also a musician, and there's a link below to a post with an mp3 of his two man project, the Bloody Tomahawks (as seen above), doing a cover of the Cramps' "Garbageman." If you dig that, there's a link or two to other places with samples (Facebook, etc.). It's good stuff.

Diddy Wah hits it just about every post. Usually just a song or two, but always worthy. A sampling is down below, but you really should just go there. The dude's been on a roll lately. His mixes are also dyn-o-mite.

ATTN: PARTY PLANNING COMMITTEE

If you were going to throw a decent Halloween bash, how hard would it be to round up a bunch of Halloween music without having to resort to "The Monster Mash" or, worse yet, "Thriller"? How about over 300 songs, in 16 mixes? Rev Frost has posted a bunch at his super fine blog Spread the Good Word. And he has great taste. Where else are you going to find Akira Ifukube's "Frankenstein At Lake Biwa"?

And what Halloween would be complete without surfing monsters, eh? I just ran across the Deadly One's "It's Monster Surfing Time" with "Igor Goes Surfing" and, yes, "It's Monster Surfing Time" (and ten others). I've no idea what the vintage is of this double edged cash-in, but it's got the Vee Jay label, so I'm guessing 60's (though the artwork is so perfectly corny that it may be faked). Dig in at Rock n' Roll Ichiban.

RIGHT PLACE, WRONG TIME

One thing that continually amazes me, because I'm of the pre-internet generation, is the ability to find people with like tastes, halfway across the world. There are a few blogs that I always check out, and two I link to quite often are Diddy Wah (UK) and Spread the Good Word (France). The hosts of these two sites seem to have tastes parallel to mine, which means that I'm constantly finding stuff that, for one reason or another, I've never added to my physical music stash (not to mention, getting turned onto stuff I've never heard).

"Right Place, Wrong Time" is one that I've always loved. A hit for Dr. John in the seventies, it's probably his best known song, and, as far as I know, the only one to chart. The fact that it did is kind of amazing in itself. The intro is killer, with a clavinet (I think) starting for a couple measures, followed by the drums and horns, then the bass and congas, and finally the guitar. An excellent cut of funky seventies New Orleans gumbo. Turn it up, loud and crank up the bass!

NO KOOKS, NO GOONS

Because I bodysurf. Because there's a lot of surf music, but not much in the way of bodysurf music. Because summer's right around the corner. Because our President bodysurfs. Because the hosting blog is held dear to the Trastos heart. Because it's just so damn weird to come across a sung called "Bodywompin'" by a band from Fresno, on a blog from France. Because the same post has the same band doing a suitably twisted cover of "Exotic." For these reasons and others, I felt compelled to post a link to a post with somewhat limited appeal. Thank you Rev. Frost.

This one's for Tim, Ted, Tryka, Gildea, Ables, Sundberg, OSPAC, and the entire Rutherford clan.

SPOKEN WEIRD

Just when you start thinking that you've got a handle of all of the offbeat genres of recorded music, comes one that is so old school WTF that you wonder what rock you've been under. Word jazz is really just spoken word laid over jazz and as simple as that sounds, when it's done right, it's simultaneously bizarre and hilarious. Really, this shit must have been de rigueur for all of the wanna be hep cats back in the day. And one of the best at it, the Chuck Berry of word jazz if you will, was Ken Nordine. After listening to one of these cuts, I instantly recognized the voice from nameless mp3s I've downloaded in the past. Leave it to Spread the Good Word (one of my favorite music blogs) to fill in the blanks about Nordine and word jazz.

BO DIDDLEY 1928 - 2008

THE BEAT IS DEAD. LONG LIVE THE BEAT. Eric Bacher said that, at Che Underground. BLOODY HELL, I'M REALLY SAD. Rev Frost of Spread the Good Word said that. Both kept it short, even in the full text of their comments, and for good reason. You get past the simplifications, and it's hard to stop. Especially for someone like Bo Diddley. Both Bacher and Frost were incredibly economic in their words, but both summed it up.
.
If the average person knows anything about Bo Diddley, they know the beat. And they probably know about the rectangular guitar. And maybe about Jerome and the Duchess. But Bo Diddley was much more than the Originator of the beat.

Who else would release, as the A-side of their first 45, a self-titled song? What other early rocker recorded their own music, in their own studio? (C'mon, I mean, how DIY can you get?) And who, before Bo Diddley, had a rock n' roll band that included a woman? And to top all this off, he literally invented his own style of rock n' roll?!! And we haven't even started tabulating the songs yet. (Fuck, do not get me started.)
..
ADDED 6/5: 15 more Bo Diddley mp3's at Probe is Turning on the People
Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley mp3 and seven others, with bio, at Spread the Good Word

TESTIFY!

Fuck yeah! Pardon my French, it's just my real world way of saying "hallelujah!” Rev. Tom Frost from Spread the Good Word has done it again. The guy from South of Hell has a knack for posting really great stuff that either I've never gotten to, or am woefully ignorant of. Most of it is roots music, be it surf, rockabilly, R & B, country, or rock n' roll, and just about everything he posts is worth a listen.
.
I confess. I'm a gospel nincompoop. If you too are lacking in the gospel category, there can't be a better place to start than with the Blind Boys of Alabama. Believe it.
