CARLEEN WAITING FOR THE NEXT ADJECTIVE

Carleen and the Groovers have been here before but I'm in a Carleen and the Groovers mood and I'm dragging you with me. The four songs below are all that they recorded, two 45s. Carleen Jean Butler was the drummer, a very funky drummer. These four songs are tight as fuck.

CARLEEN JEAN BUTLER, THAT'S WHO.

Time for some relatively obscure funky butt movers. All three of these bands were unknown to me until I came across some post on some long forgotten blog drooling over some new (at the time) reissue. That was a while ago. By now they're like old pals. I was kind of missing them, maybe you too if you've heard them before. It's better if you've never heard them, you can figure out where to go from here.

Carleen and the Groovers feature Carleen Jean Butler (that's her at the top of the post) on drums, and she smokes. Really. Dyke and the Blazers are a solid presence in the second tier of funk and soul recognition. In other words, out of the three they're the better known. The Kashmere Stage Band is one unbelievably tight high school stage band. Check the drummer, whoever he is, on those two cuts. Jeez. High school.

GIVE THIS DRUMMER SOME TOO

Big hair, a big beat, and funky as all get out, Carleen Jean Butler was the drummer behind Carleen and the Groovers, a Charleston funk band that included her brother Clary, once a member of Wilson Picket's band, on trumpet. They released only two 45s before Carleen high tailed it to Germany, leaving Clary to pick up another drummer and change the name of the band. But those two 45s are whoppers. I've posted these before but it was six years ago, so they're buried back in there someplace. Regardless, you probably haven't heard them, I'm lazy tonight, and that adds up to a cheater post.

CARLEEN, CAN YOU KNOCK 'EM OUT?

Look at the photo above. Think those drums are a prop? Think again. That's Carleen Jean Butler, the funky beat behind Carleen & the Groovers, a South Carolina band formed in 1970. The five piece Groovers also featured her brother, Clary (who did some time playing trumpet behind Wilson Picket) on some inspired GFOS-esque vocals. The exchanges between brother and sister in "Hot Pants" (link below) are classic: "Carleen, can you knock 'em out?" she answers coyly, "Right on!", and then, after some restrained showboating, she says "Is that black enough for you?" Ohh, if only there was some video floating around. As it is, Carleen & the Groovers released only two 45s.
