I've no clue how I ended up on a Raincoats binge tonight, but it'll be taking me away from here. Some of you know them. Some of you don't know them and will think they're absolute crap. And some of you don't know them but will be intrigued. Their first record came about 1979. Punk rock was still happening and the hardcore thing wasn't yet on its feet. There were relatively few punk-informed bands that said "fuck that shit" and stepped beyond the restrictive unwritten codes. Seriously, good post-punk makes punk rock seem like new wave in regards to all that formulaic crap, albeit three chord formulaic crap. The Raincoats were one of the first bands I remember hearing breaking out of that. They were one of those bands that, when you first heard them you thought "Okay, so this is the direction things are going."
