ASS DEEP IN TWANG

Okay, so there's this thing going around social media that friends are posting, encouraging people to post music rather then self absorbed ramblings, complaining, pictures of meals, cat stuff, i.e. the usual drivel. It's one of those things, "like this post and I'll give you a letter, then post a song by an artist with that initial". Innocent enough, right? Well, soul sister Lady Spinsta was dealt "E". and surprised the hell out of me by posting Duane Eddy's "Rebel Rouser".

Duane Eddy was, and is, the poster boy of twang. I would imagine most of you know that. He made a career out of twang, with hits spanning four decades. Because I don't really know who visits here, in case you don't know him I'll lay this on you: Eddy was respected enough that when he resurfaced in the eighties, John Fogerty, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ry Cooder, James Burton, David Lindley, and Steve Cropper, all lined up to play on an album. All because of twang. Go figure.

About the songs: there's just a few below, but a link to about sixty or seventy at Internet Archive. (Once there, scroll down. There's two columns of mp3s, with the left column the better quality.) But before you split, you should really check a couple below. "Stalkin'", because it's about as baddass as Duane Eddy ever got, and "Your Baby's Gone Surfin'" because, despite having the oft present cheesy bacgkround vocals, Darlene Love was one of the vocalists and she really goes off at 1:53. "Twistin' Off a Cliff" is down there because it's a perennial party favorite.

DEL-FI ROCKERS

A few days ago I posted some Del-Fi Records non-hits. Good as they were, I figured we ought to give label owner Bob Keane his due, so here's a few Del-Fi all-timers, a couple each from Chan Romero and Richie Valens. As familiar as they may be, you can't deny their top-shelf worthiness.

KILLER READ ALERT

Remember my friend Ray, aka "The Guy Who Always Finds Cool Shit On YouTube"? He just hepped me to what is probably the best thing I've ever read about Eddie Cochran, written by a friend of his. It's on Huffington Post of all places and well worth the read. If you need tunes to go along with it, there's a link below to a post from a few months ago.

IT'S WOMACK NIGHT OVER HERE

Bobby Womack died yesterday. That's a bummer. It's gonna be one of those nights, totally sidetracked. I'll just leave these here. You should know at least a handful of his songs.  These are the first few I ran into. Considering they represent almost four decades, there's a hell of a lot of dots to connect. You know how to do that, right?

GET THOSE KIDS OUTTA HERE

Diddy Wah just posted the first 45 by Junior Kimbrough, credited as Junior Kimbell, from 1967. After hearing that, I started browsing and landed on the video below. All hell broke loose. The evening is shot. Check it out. You know what comes to mind? A phrase from the liner notes on an early Johnny Winter LP: "hypnotic blues bag". That's what Junior Kimbrough is. He's a hypnotic blues bag. What he's got is what others wish they had, some kind of intangible numbing air. What the Stones couldn't summon on Exile on Main St., or the Black Keys on The Big Come Up. Don't even think about bringing up the Jon Spencer thing, or, for crying out loud, the edit by Daft Punk (for a fashion show of all things). Watch the video, rather listen to it. That's not something you can bottle.

HEY, OVER THERE!

This is going to be a quick one. I had a zillion things to do tonight. Really, more like four. But that's about three more than I'd care to have. Here's the post at Probe Is Turning-On the People that included the Bedwells' "Karate", that was posted yesterday. There's sixteen karate themed songs (if you include the Hai Karate commercial), with a high keeper ratio. Some really good ones. One more click.

KEANE DON'T CARE

Man, you gotta love Del-Fi Records. They were one of those West Coast independent labels that just threw everything at the wall. They didn't have a real signature sound, like Stax, Sun, Motown, et al. Owner Bob Keane gave everything a shot. There were some hits and as was the case with independent labels, many, many misses. Here's a grab bag of some oddballs misses. Too many hits kind of creeps me out anyways..

PRIMORDIAL CHILL

When it comes to restrained coolness, it really doesn't get any cooler than Santo and Johnny's "Sleepwalk". It's a multi-purpose instrumental, good for barbeques, post-beach chilling, and, as my high school friend Randy would say "a slow dance with a foxy chick" (a comment that was met with guffaws by all present because this guy never came close to slow dancing with a cardboard stand-up, let alone a foxy chick). It's been posted here before, but I just ran across an extended version, long enough to give even imaginary player Randy a run for his money. It sounds like it was recorded at a different session than the original, but retains the innate goosebump inducing vibe, four and a half minutes of it. [Note: The long version was mislabeled at Plain or Pan. It's actually the Ventures.]

EL PARCHE

Seriously. Just take a look at that publicity photo. It's Esteban Jordan, a San Antonio musician. Obviously an accordion player. With a look like that, the guy could sing disco songs about dog shit and I'd still eat it up.  But he didn't. What he did do was stretch the boundaries of Tex-Mex, using effects (fuzz, echo, phase shifters), and elements of soul, jazz, funk, and rock 'n' roll to suit his fancy, unknowingly creating what sounds like Tex-Mex psych dub. So, he liked to fuck with things. Cool. But you know what I really like about him? The guy played thirty five different instruments, and chose the accordion. Lest you think he was just some freak that was disregarded by peers, he recorded with Flaco Jimenez, and that's just about all the squeeze box cred that's needed.

If you think I was kidding about the Tex-Mex psych dub thing, check the video below. As cool looking as it is, let it rip, without watching the screen. I gotta find this record. Maaaan. And take a listen to "Squeeze Box Man", Really. It's funky as all get out. There's also a video of him doing "Summertime" below, as in Gershwin's (posted Ricky Nelson's version of the same song a couple days ago). While I'm not keen on the more contemporary jazz feel, and the scat thing he throws in there, I gotta stand back and marvel at the weirdness of it.

BELYING LOOKS DEPT.

If you need a reminder of how much good punk rock slipped through the cracks back in the late seventies, just go dig through Killed By Death. Every once in a while I'll just poke around through their old posts, and I almost always stumble across a song that ranks right up there with all of the early punk stuff that you and I have heard a thousand times before, you know, the classics. The Cigarettes' "They're Back Again, Here They Come" is one of those. It sounds like a cross between Spiral Scratch era Buzzcocks and ATV. Don't let the intro fool you, after about thirty seconds it kicks in, and it's one of those low budget smash and grab catchy as hell specials. The lyrics ain't half bad either, anti-neo-Nazi stuff. It's posted with two other songs that aren't quite as good, but what the hell, I'm not looking for a greatest hits package.

I DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT CATFISH

Ohh yeeah. Summer starts tomorrow. Warm days, warm water, bonfires, weenie roasts; what's not to like?  I can't be objective, I live in Southern California, I live for this shit. But rather than start this three month party off with surf instrumentals, surf themed vocal garbage, or anything else too beach oriented, I had to go looking for this sucker, Ricky Nelson doing "Summertime", written for the musical Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. Yeah, that's right, I'm a cultured sonofabitch. Nelson packs some punch into this one. It sounds considerably later than 1962, the year that it was recorded. Almost sounds like he's backed by the Yardbirds. James Burton on guitar, yesssir. Even though being in Southern California, I can't really relate to the lyrics, I've got three months to bore the hell out of you with all the cliché shit. So take your damn shoes off already. You can do that anywhere.

GOODBYE HIT MACHINE

Gerry Goffin died today. He was a brilliant songwriter, and that's not just some casual use of the word. He partnered with Carole King and together they were a hit machine. The two wrote fifty Top 40 hits between 1960 and 1968. Their first collaborative hit, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", was recorded by the Shirelles in 1960, and it's my favorite, hands down. It's about as close to perfect as you can get, Nothing is absolutely perfect, Nothing. This is close.

GUITAR JACKOFFERY

Back when I was in my teens, I use to eat rock guitar records for breakfast. Shit yeah, Ten Years After was in there. Them and a hundred other bands. At this point in my life, I can't bothered, but back then, the term guitar hero meant something. It sold records, it packed smoke filled arenas, it sold magazines, and it actually got teenage boys to pick up a damn broom.

I don't think I've heard this earlier version of "I'm Going Home", the guitar jackoff anthem of Woodstock. If I have, it's been a long while. (Off topic, but I must interject here, because I just thought about it. No matter how well intended, a peace sign sticker has no business being on an ES335. It's just wrong.) I don't mean that Alvin Lee himself is a jackoff. Every guitarist was a show off back then. More power to 'em, That's not the reason I'm posting this. I'm posting it because it sounds more pared down, a little raw compared to the Woodstock version. And I think my brother will dig it. Though, for the life of me, I don't know if I find it comical or not. I don't care. I'm a wild man.

STILL THEY COME

A few years back there was all of this talk about a soul revival going on, or starting, or some other tangent. Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Daptone Records, Eli Paperboy Reed, Ryan Shaw, and so on; all that shit going on around the same time. Plus a bunch of good specialty labels reissuing obscure old stuff. Everything was going along just fine. Then the nitpicking: who came first, who's the most authentic, who was the guiding light. Roughly a decade later, it doesn't matter much at all. The massive success of Amy Whitehouse was sadly short lived and there was no apparent successor, at least in terms of widespread popularity. So it's still in these little pockets.

Either I've had my head in the sand, or I just stumbled onto a pocket heretofore unknown to me. The Foxionaires, with Brandy Butler. Their particular pocket, Biel, Switzerland, population 50,000. (How about a Hee Haw salute?). This is some good stuff, from just a few years back. The last activity I ran into was a live date from late 2013. I also put another track down there, as a sort of vintage soul control group. You know, just go compare. Get out of my hair.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD

As you might know, the Equals recorded the original version of "Police On My Back", covered by the Clash on their 1979 double LP, London Calling. What you may not know is that they were one of Britain's few multi-racial bands from the mid-sixties, with two British members, two Jamaican, and one from Guyana, the latter being Eddy "Electric Avenue" Grant. And that's about it. There's nothing much all that remarkable about their sound, nothing extreme or crazy, and by all matters of reason I shouldn't even be attracted to their music. But, there's this thing, their songs have a tendency to get stuck in your head. "Baby Come Back", their first and only big hit, is a good example. I hadn't listened to it in years. Heard it today, and it was "Aw shit, I'll be hearing that jostle around in my head for hours". So, what the hell, let's exorcise this shit.

THE LIST GETS LONGER

Man, oh man, I swear, sometimes if you so much as blink you could end up never knowing about a singer that might be right up your alley. If it wasn't for On The Flip-Side, I may have walked around the rest of my life not knowing who Margie Hendrix was. And even after having been turned onto her music (thank you very much Morgan), and going digging for more background info, I was once again reminded how much unheard music and how many untold stories there are. When Sir Shambling mentions that there's little info out there about Hendrix, you pretty much have to cut your losses. I mean, the guy's research is always exhaustive, so I'm going to take him at his word.

Hendrix was a Raelette, singing backing vocals behind Ray Charles, with whom she also had a relationship. After bearing Charles's child, the two split up, and she was let go as a Raelette. She continued to record as a solo artist, but, whether it was the plethora of great female R & B singers around at the time, a lack of promotion, or something else, Hendrix never really broke. After listening to her music, it seems pretty unbelievable. Holy hell, does it ever.

TUBBY? NEVER HEARD OF HIM.

I'm not into Outkast enough to know much of what they sounded like in the early years, but if their 1998 cut "Spottieottiedopaliscious" is any indication, I've got some more digging to do, It's a seven minute groove that sounds something like a cross between King Tubby and the Budos Band. SHAKE IT OFF

Alright already, back in business. (In case you're wondering, the culprit was a fried motherboard in the juice box.) After a few unplanned days away from here, I figured it'd be a good idea to dance with the one that brought me, in other words, rock 'n' roll. Straight up, no mop tops, hippies, spikey hair or phony hyphenated offshoots. No extended solos, bell bottoms, gongs, wah-wahs, or any other extraneous bullshit. A return to the womb, so to speak. So here you go, a mix of what should be considered essentials. If you dig any particular artist, check the index to the right. There's probably more of each floating around here.

COP TO IT

I was just goofing around over at Boogaloo Time, and I ran into Tom Jones's "Chills and Fever". That was gonna be it. But then I listened to "She's A Lady" again. Holy fuck, that's one reason I don't mind being my age. I got to hear "She's A Lady" coming out of a tinny speaker on an AM radio. Compare that to...oh fuck, nevermind.

Check this video of him with Janis Joplin. It smokes. There's some sort of weird show biz mutual respect chemistry thing going on there. I really, really dig it when they're dancing together during the sax solo. But the whole thing, beginning to end, is just plain awesome. Even the fully freaking dancing extras are a gas.

BBQ MUSIC. COMMENCE WEEKEND.

This is a weird one. Good, but a little overcooked. It's a DJ created mix, with an excellent song selection. The selector, one Tek A Dee, is an overactive sonofabitch. Maybe that's how it's done, but sheesh. I can see just playing partial songs, after all, there are 48 songs packed into one hour, something's got to give. But man, this one goes sound bite crazy, heavy on JB screams, and Austin Powers. What the hell is that? It can be annoying, particularly if you're a purist. But I've got to hand it to him, it is an excellent song selection. I'm not going to cut and paste the song list, check it out here. If you don't have much reggae, this is a perfect way to introduce yourself to a lot of stuff in just an hour. The sound bites seem to lessen as you get further into it. Maybe I'm being too harsh. I'm starting to like the mood this mix is getting me into. I'm lightening up. That's probably the desired effect. Tricked again.

Note: It's hosted on Soundcloud. The "download" link is the small button, next to the "share" button, under the comment thing. If you go to the post to hear it, the download link is the small downward pointing arrow on the streaming bar. And, again, the song list is here.

DELICIA DE LA SCAVENGER

Oh yeaaah, the internet boneyard. I dig it. Maybe because dormant blogs with good music and links that still function give me the thrill of digging through tossed out records without getting my hands dirty. Come to think of it, that's part of what I like about digging through tossed out records. Getting dirty. You feel like you're on some sort of recon mission. Whatever. I ran into these gems five years ago, and was surprised that the links still function. One of these sites has been dormant for a year, the other for five years. Check both. There's a lot of top shelf stuff, most of which you may never run across again.

These particular songs are by Latin bands that sound like they listened to more than a little soul music. It's funky soul, and there's some Stax like stuff going on. Ersatz Stax was plentiful back then. Oh god, there's a genre name waiting to happen, Stax Mex. Let the eyerolling begin.

THAT GUY

He played on the Flamin' Groovies' "Teenage Head", and the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses". In the same year. He played on Aretha Franklin recordings, and some from Rocket From The Crypt. Ditto Ry Cooder, Mudhoney, Big Star, the Replacements, Sam and Dave, Toots and the Maytals, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Bob Dylan, Petula Clark, and.Tav Falco. He's recorded his own records, both music and spoken word. He has been backed by the Cramps. He's Jim Dickinson. Musician, producer, songwriter, and apparent replicant.

Adios Lounge just posted a thing with Dickinson talking about his work with the Stones. That prompted you know what. Rabbit hole, here we come. So, here's just a handful to get you started. NICE WINGTIPS

If you lived in San Diego before it got spiffed up downtown, and spent any time in the vicinity of the Greyhound station and the Funland arcade, you no doubt walked past a seedy looking time machine of a strip bar, the name of which escapes me. Strip bar, because it had strippers, and it had alcohol, but there's no way it qualified as a strip club. I'll give you an idea what it was like. In the display window, where a glamor photo of an entertainer may once have been, there was a faded black and white poster of Raquel Welch, from One Million Years B.C. It was in that window for years, decades after the film had come and gone. I must have walked past it 46 times.

After seeing the poster slowly deteriorate for years, I decided to see if Raquel Welch was inside. She was not. But I passed through some sort of portal. It was very dark, the room smelled, sweat, booze, cigarettes. I was with my friend Kevin. We had decided that that, if we were curious enough to look inside, it would be the right thing to do, to sit down and take it in with a beer. But in a single moment, our voyeuristic anthropological study got turned on its face. There were about a dozen or so patrons in the bar, most were just kind of glancing at the stripper. No real gaping. The dancer finished her set, and then, from the stage, she said "I'm off work. Does anybody want to take me home with them?" Dead silence. I honestly don't remember what music was playing in that place, but I'd like to imagine that at one time, in its heyday, they were spinning stuff like the songs below, all from the Las Vegas Grind series of compilations.
