Man, oh man, I swear, sometimes if you so much as blink you could end up never knowing about a singer that might be right up your alley. If it wasn't for On The Flip-Side, I may have walked around the rest of my life not knowing who Margie Hendrix was. And even after having been turned onto her music (thank you very much Morgan), and going digging for more background info, I was once again reminded how much unheard music and how many untold stories there are. When Sir Shambling mentions that there's little info out there about Hendrix, you pretty much have to cut your losses. I mean, the guy's research is always exhaustive, so I'm going to take him at his word.
Hendrix was a Raelette, singing backing vocals behind Ray Charles, with whom she also had a relationship. After bearing Charles's child, the two split up, and she was let go as a Raelette. She continued to record as a solo artist, but, whether it was the plethora of great female R & B singers around at the time, a lack of promotion, or something else, Hendrix never really broke. After listening to her music, it seems pretty unbelievable. Holy hell, does it ever.
