AAHHHAAHHHH!!!

A few weeks ago I was helping a friend go through her dad's record collection. I'd never had the opportunity to meet her dad, but after going through about a third of his collection, it was apparent that he was my kinda music fiend. His collection was incredibly varied, and almost all of the albums were in really good shape, If the LP came with some sort of insert, they were there (The Isaac Hayes's "Black Moses" LP with the giant fold out cover still had a coupon to get the Isaac Hayes discount on a subscription to Ebony magazine.) A lot of them still had the shrink wrap on them. And he was a man of taste. To give you an idea, while we were going through them, we were spinning random selections, including an early King Sunny Ade, followed by Bud Shanks' soundtrack for Bruce Brown's 1959 surf film Slippery When Wet, and after that, Ronnie Hawkin's self-titled LP. Yeah, "Who Do You Love". The two gutterall screams (at :52 and 1:56) are among my favorite monosyllabic passages of all time. The outro yelp at the end is just icing on the cake.

THREE GUYS WALK OUT OF A BAR

It's the end of an era. The Heartbreakers are now officially dead. After Billy Rath's recent passing, three out of the four members are physically dead, and Walter Lure, if Wikipedia is to be believed, is a stockbroker on Wall Street. I suppose that could be bullshit, but suppose it's true. Yeah. Extrapolate: What if he later repented, and burned his tie? He would still be an ex-stockbroker. And even though he still plays music with his band the Waldos, any band with a stockbroker among its ranks might as well be a Dave Matthews cover band. I've got nothing against Lure, or stockbrokers per se, I'm just stating facts. Let's just get this Occam's razor shit out of the way. Stock brokers are not rock 'n' roll. Ex-stockbrokers are not rock 'n' roll. The Hearbreakers are rock 'n' roll.

DO THE DOO

You know what I dig about doo-wop, and vocal groups in general?  There was just so damn many of them, and they all had to distinguish themselves from one another within the confines of some sort of unwritten code of conduct. Every group had to have at least four to five members, they had to have a snappy name for their group, they had to have promo photos that showed one or more with pleading hands or some kooky ass version of jazz hands, and they all had wear matching get-ups. Other than that, the sky was the limit. Weird vocal inflections, nutty lyrics, or wild backing bands, in varying amounts, all served to get a little attention. But more often than not, not enough to top the charts. Some of it was too wild, too nutty, or just plain crappy. There's a lot, by groups you and I have never heard of, and the non-hits, as with most forms of music, are almost guaranteed to be more interesting than some boring chart toppers. The Twilight's "Little Richard" is a good example. It's not about the Little Richard, but a little Richard, as in a kid. A kid who throws a rock the singer's head, slashes his tires, and throws mud at him. Sh-boom, sh-boom, your life might be a dream, but I'm digging the hijinks.

I've mentioned Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban's Vocal Group of the Week series before. A 45 a week, of five guys hollering. Kogar the Swinging Ape. a frequent poster over there, just put together a compilation of them, so there's a link below, and another to their posts tagged as Vocal Group of the Week, so you can hear them individually. AGAIN WITH THE SUN RA

Well, that was weird, I was talking music with the guy behind the counter at the local mom and pop hardware store (Ocean Beach Paint and Hardware), and towards the end of the conversation, Sun Ra came up. When I got home about twenty minutes later, there was a thing in my in box about a new Sun Ra compilation. It won't be out for another month, and the email was for pre-orders. Shit, pre-order? I don't do that. Nevertheless I followed the link to read about it and was treated to an excellent track I hadn't heard before.

AMBITION: BLOW MINDS

Earlier today I read something about some old hardened 78 collector being transformed when one of his favorite old slabs was playing. "Experiencing ecstasy" is what it actually said. A bunch of songs can do that to me, or get close. While not necessarily ecstasy, they can turn me into an old softie. One that came to mind was "Surf's Up", from the Beach Boys album of the same name. It was written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks in 1966, originally for the Smile LP, but that album was never completed. (Not back then anyways.) The song was finished for the later album, Surf's Up, in 1971. That's the first version below. The second version below is a demo. There are a few other versions, notably one on a Brian Wilson solo album in 2004, and another patched together with tapes from the original Smile sessions. Check this video, a live version by Brian Wilson. It's just plain awesome, thickly layered and every bit as complex as the recorded versions. His reaction to the ovation at the end is heartwarming.

There's also a great documentary, Beautiful Dreamer (also linked below), about the Smile sessions. Lots of musicians and media types interviewed, lots of Brian Wilson, and a shitload of details. It should get you caught up, if you're so inclined. It's over an hour and a half long, so, yeah, go pee and get a beer now.

EL PRODUCTIVO

When it comes to musicians who started their career in a punk band, there may be no one more prolific than Billy Childish. Hell, when it comes to any musician, there are very few who put out as many records as he did, in the same time span. His discography between 1979 and 2013 lists over a hundred albums. That's an average of three LP appearances a year, for thirty plus years. Even if you liberally discarded half as compilations of one sort or another, that's still over fifty albums. That doesn't take into account the singles. Before you go muttering "dude's a machine", consider this: he's an artist, published poet, and author of half a dozen novels. He's more like a vending machine.

Here's just a few from one of his many bands, Thee Headcoats. The recordings on these are insanely raw (may be a Toe Rag thing). Keep in mind that this is like just a molecule on the tip of the iceberg. You could get lost in all of his stuff, and I have been, slowly, over time. I can't even consume at the rate his body of work was created. I'm just pacimg myself.

TROPICAL CRUSH ALERT

I just heard a cover of Os Mutantes' "Baby" by Gal Costa. I'm not gonna fight it. I started revisiting old stuff, and I got sucked in again. Before I high tail it, I gotta say, that cover photo above is some kind of unattainable cool, isn't it? That thing that Anita Pallenberg had in her prime. Maria Schneider too, Last Tango In Paris-era. The high priestess of lady cool, Brigitte Bardot, in her every burp and fart. Gal Costa exudes that sort of cool, only she has a voice and she's Brazilian. Tropical cool. Yeah baby. And she's made some really great records. Check out the fifteen at Super Sonido. It's an awesome cross section. And read the text. He's got the profile and music stuff covered. Oh, and on "Baby"? She's singing it to me, Just so you know.

TACOMA-A-A-A!!!

Because I'm in one of those moods, I'm throwing caution at the wind. I know that by using the word "douche" to describe an asshole could possibly get women's libbers ten kinds of pissed (and that comment probably sealed it). But, I'm sorry, used in a casual, off color vernacular, there is no better word to describe the newest member of the Mike Love Army, one Tommy Lee. This short little clip is the, well, it's like a fuckin' dream Tacoma.  When you're done watching how fucking awesome his drum solo banter is in Tacoma, dig the link below for forty five minutes of Paul Stanley spoken word.

OH SHIT. THAT'S MY DAD.

What the hell. I just ran into a relatively jammin' version of the Dark Shadows theme. I don't remember watching the show back when it was on, I was probably up on the corner with the other kids, hiding behind Mrs Mixson's wall, chucking apricots at passing cars. That was fun. Until one of the other kids threw an apricot at at my dad's truck. You can guess who suffered for that bonehead indiscretion.

TWEE PEOPLE, GET DIRTY

Surf music purists beware, you'll probably hate "Sand Witches". However, if you like your surf music sounding like Harley Davidson of Deadbolt playing with Pussy Galore, you're in luck. I'm not trying to be an asshole. I know only about four of you will know both of those bands, but those four of you will know exactly what I mean. There's a lot of other noisy shit going on in it, but that Deadbolt and Pussy Galore would be the predominant noisy shit.

The song is by Druggy Pizza aka Cédric Bottacchi from Dusty Mush, not that that tells you anything. I don't know who the hell he is, some French dude. I just ran into it.  Checked out a video by Dusty Mush and they're fairly noisy too. Heavy on the distortion with a primal kit bashing beat, self aware as it might be. Regardless, nice to hear the youngsters still banging on guitars instead of some of that button down reverent stuff. Abrasive music should be encouraged. Always.

SOMEONE PAT HIM ON THE BACK

Charlie Feathers is one if those rockabilly guys who's kind of an acquired taste. His delivery can be a little off putting to a casual listener. I don't know, I like it. It's unique. SURF MUSIC ROULETTE

Man, the real Gidget was badass, wasn't she? Think about it. All guys surfing? She didn't give a shit. That's her, that tough looking lady in the photo above. Kathy Kohner, the real Gidget. Determined look I'd say, considerably more badass than movie Gidget, Sandra Dee. That calls for some oddball new-ish surf music. Because segues are overrated.

Sort through some of these. There's about a hundred in all, posted on the Internet Archive by Surf Guitar 101. Fair warning: Some are iffy, some suck, but there's a decent percentage of good ones, some really good, by bands you will probably never again get a chance to hear. Hey, there's a fairly noisy Link Wray cover. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, go ahead, walk around like that. Go ahead, be the movie Gidget.

OTIS AND A GRAB BAG

Mother lovin' Diddy Wah did it again. That fucking rascal. He posted Otis Rush's "Homework", which many of you older Bic lighter wavers might know from the J. Geils version. Rush's original version just sent me right into a clicking frenzy, through the series of semi-related songs below. It's compare and contrast night over here..

I dig the production on all of these, as different as they are. In varying amounts of rawness, most could easily have been cut live in the studio with no overdubs, if that's any kind of reference. It's all some kind of electric blues, done by a black dude, a greasy rock band,  some ticking time bomb-weird spit shined Canadian white kids, a British blues demigod, and a really, really white guy from Texas.

FINK OR FREAK?

I'm not all that crazy about Kim Fowley. He's a bit of a self-aggrandizing jerk. No, wait, not a bit. He's practically the textbook definition. If he happened to be lurking somewhere in the studio when some minor hit was recorded and so much as farted, believe me, he's gonna take credit for something. That said, he has been in the studio when an awful lot of minor hits were recorded. And he recorded some oddball records of his own, occupying that black hole between garage and Zappa. In other words, weird enough to have absolutely no commercial potential whatsoever. This, of course, gives him a free pass here, despite all of his blowhard tendencies.

LITTLE ESTHER DOES WILLIE

Want your mind blown? The guy that wrote "Hello Walls" is a pothead. You country people know who I'm talking about, one Willie Nelson. What an insane career he's had. I'm not even gonna go down that road tonight. He's done too much to mention in a haphazard post. Between all of the songs he's written, the records he's released, the duets, the collaborations, the voice, the picking,...hell, just mentioning the categories of notable achievements takes up a half paragraph. So, Willie Nelson wrote it, but I just brought that up because tonight I heard a vastly different version than the one that was a hit in 1961 for Faron Young. It's a 1964 cover by Little Esther Phillips. It's very cool reworked as a soul ballad, produced by Bert Berns. Nelson himself recorded it 1962, followed by Bing Crosby, Ricky Nelson, Brook Benton, and, a couple decades later, Reverend Horton Heat. But, really, it's Little Esther's night. If you get all Hello Walls weepy, check "Mo Jo Hannah" to reset your clock.

MAINTAIN SPEED

I remember the first time I heard Rosco Gordon. It was the song "Just A Little Bit", on a VeeJay compilation. Do you know it? Then you likely know his delivery on that third line "I don't want it all-l-l". That's what hooked me. It's so relaxed, he practically sounds drunk. Slays me ever time. And that same delivery is all over his stuff. So the slaying has been pretty consistent over the years. Gordon was a rhythm and blues guy who recorded for a bunch of different labels, among them Chess and Sun, but he may be the only person who recorded Chess, Sun and Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. That little factoid grants him sainthood around here, and that don't come easy.

Diddy Wah just posted "Just A Little Bit" and it doesn't pop up that often, hence this lazy post. For a lot of good reading on Gordon, check out the thing at The Hound Blog. For some extrapolating on his rhythm and its influence on late fifties and early sixties Jamaican music, check out Boogie Woogie Flu post.

COSIMO BAIT

Wow, talk about a double whammy! It's not every day that you run into the first studio recordings of Jerry Lee Lewis. That would be enough, but wait! Don't go running off yet. Just hear me out. Do you know the name Cosimo Matassa? He's the studio owner who recorded the Killer, and someone you should know. Matassa was a New Orleans record store owner when he decided to start a recording studio, and later a record label. Let's just say his shit did not stink. If your tastes include New Orleans R&B and early rock 'n' roll, you likely have Matassa to thank for many of the sides in your collection. You need to check out The Cosimo Code, the host of these two songs. It's an exhaustive site about the recordings of Matassa, and a collaborative effort with contributions from some serious heavy hitters (Soul Detective, Sir Shambling's Deep Soul Heaven, Home of the Groove, among others). The site is one of the best, most comprehensive single subject music related websites I've ever come across, and believe me, I'm a trolling fool. Bookmark it, or remain a bonehead.

About these Jerry Lee sides: They were recorded in 1952, when he was sixteen and just getting his sea legs. The vocal number, a cover of Lefty Frizzell's "Don't Stay Away (Till Love Grows Cold)" is notable because the Killer sounds like a baby, hitting some notes so high you can practically hear his teenage voice crack. The other song is an instrumental "Jerry's Boogie" (aka "New Orleans Boogie") that is just completely nuts when you consider the nimble chops are coming from a sixteen year old kid.
