Every type of music has that guy. The non-musician, be it producer or engineer, that is attached to a gigantic swath of the genres best music. In jazz, Rudy Van Gelder is that guy. Over three thousand sessions by the biggest names in jazz. Here's four, selected because they're all named after places (Could be wrong about "Afreaka".) The Sonny Rollins cut is the shit.

I understand this as well. But I have encountered some criticism of Rudy Van Gelder on the Steve Hoffman forum; which has appearantly led to people being kicked and banned from it(!).
