Been a while since we've checked in on African sounds...wait, what's this? Club Cortez just posted a recently reissued Ebo Taylor cut? Well then, Ebo it is. Taylor is something of a rarity, a first generation afrobeater with newish material, albeit with a twenty year gap between his last old record and the 2010 LP Love and Death. Doesn't really matter though, this stuff is timeless. You'd be forgiven if you compared his music to Fela's, They came from the same musical space, so that's going to happen. But, according to liner notes of one compilation, he's cited influences as diverse as jazz dudes Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery and Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore. Regardless of who influenced him, I'd much, much rather listen to excellent afrobeat than shitty rock 'n' roll. It clears your head.
