Want your mind blown? The guy that wrote "Hello Walls" is a pothead. You
country people know who I'm talking about, one Willie Nelson. What an
insane career he's had. I'm not even gonna go down that road tonight.
He's done too much to mention in a haphazard post. Between all of the
songs he's written, the records he's released, the duets, the collaborations, the voice, the picking,...hell, just mentioning the categories of notable achievements takes up a half paragraph. So, Willie
Nelson wrote it, but I just brought that up because tonight I heard a
vastly different version than the one that was a hit in 1961
for Faron Young. It's a 1964 cover by Little Esther Phillips. It's
very cool reworked as a soul ballad, produced by Bert Berns. Nelson himself recorded it 1962, followed by Bing Crosby,
Ricky Nelson, Brook Benton, and, a couple decades later, Reverend Horton Heat.
But, really, it's Little Esther's night. If you get all Hello Walls
weepy, check "Mo Jo Hannah" to reset your clock.
