TOOTS DIED YESTERDAY.

This sucks. Toots Hibbert died yesterday from Covid. He was in intensive care in a Jamaican hospital about ten days ago and after a couple days came news that his condition was improving. Like a lot of people, I was relieved. Hearing this today was a major bummer.

Hibbert was the lead singer of Toots and the Maytals and there from the beginning, active throughout the years from the ska era up to just a few weeks ago when his latest album came out. His voice was distinctive in a gruff Otis Redding sort of way, and he could make you like songs you previously hated (check his take on John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads". Whoa!). Dude was reggae.

Here's a few songs that I didn't post when I did the post about him going into intensive care a week or so ago, along with a couple I did post because some are just vital (see "Pressure Drop"). Some of it is very early, when they were billed as just The Maytals. If you're unfamiliar with Toots and the Maytals altogether, check this documentary.

R.I.P. to one of the true greats. I'm so glad I went to see him live, about a year and a half ago. Tom, thanks for posting the link to that BBC doc - I watched it when you first posted it, and it's great.
