DROP YOUR GUARD

After posting Ty Segall the other day, I got a message from the son of a couple I know. I go way back with this kid. It was at my apartment that his parents met, so that should give you an idea. I know he was brought up listening to good music, beginning at a very young age, and he pays attention to newer stuff much more than I do. I trust his taste enough to follow a lead. He recommended a band he thought I'd like, Parquet Courts. I know. You get one chance to name your band and you pick that? Right off the bat, I had a decision to make. Begin nitpicking or just listen to it with the ears of an eighteen year old. I chose the latter, and you know what? These guys make some respectable noise. There's all sorts of stuff I hear in there, not the least of which is guitar interplay that belies the era they're stuck in. The type of stuff that Dream Syndicate did when they were channeling the Velvet Underground and Everyone Knows This is Nowhere era Neil Young. Robert Quine when he stretched out on stuff with the Voidoids. Hell, even Jonathan Richman's playing on "Pablo Picasso". So, with the kid in mind, it's noisy guitar night over here,

A plug for tonight's suggester: His name is Reoh Darwell, and this kid is a fighter. Born with cystic fibrosis, he jumped head first into distance running, was on his school's cross country team, racked up awards and graduated high school with a 4.2 average. Hear me out. If you think this sounds like the work of some over achieving goody two shoes being pushed by smothering parents, think again, This was the work of one cool baddass kid. I've known this family since before they were a family. They're good people, that don't just fall into line. You know what I mean. They're like us. 

If you feel like helping out Reoh, and his brother who was also born with CF, and all others who suffer from the disease, donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. If you want to help Reoh get a scholarship, you can go to this site to vote for him (before September 15). Know this: I've never heard this family complain about the daily treatments Reoh and his brother require, let alone all of the medical costs. They didn't ask, or even hint about a mention here. After Reoh suggested the song, I just got to thinking about all the time I've spent with them over the years. They're a cool family, a very cool family. They are goofy and they have taste. You'd like them.

THE WELL MEANING DICKHEAD

If you're into the Beach Boys enough to go beyond their discography, you know who Murry Wilson is. He was the father of Brian. Carl and Dennis Wilson, and he was a bit of an asshole. Though some of his behavior could be written off as well intended, you don't exactly get the Father of the Year award for hitting your son upside the head with a two by four. And that's just one incident. But even the victim in that incident, Brian Wilson, has acknowledged his fathers influence on his initial interest in music. But you cannot, as a dad, coast on that. You can't be going around swinging slabs of wood at your family. It's been a while since I've read Brian Wilson's autobiography, Wouldn't It Be Nice, but I remember coming away from it thinking Murry Wilson was a complete dick.

Beach Boys minutia nuts, this might interest you. Ten Murry Wilson related songs at Probe Is Turning-On the People (scroll down to "Session 496 - The Moody Moods of Murry Wilson); some he wrote, some he released under his own name, and a couple he wrote and produced for the Sunrays, a Beach Boys soundalike band. If that's too much hassle, you can listen to a shnockered Murry Wilson dropping by the recording studio to provide his unsolicited advice during the recording of "Help Me Rhonda". Oh, the hilarity that ensues. You gotta know all of the annoying and abusive behavior of Murry Wilson had a butterfly effect. I swear to God, if you listen closely, you can hear six Wilson you-know-whats drop all at once. Though, if that were the case they'd have to be called the Beach Men, and that just wouldn't work at all.

ALL SCHOOLS JAM

I'm so many years removed from school, it doesn't even bug me when the school year starts. Hasn't for years. It's not my problem. But if I was going to do it all over again, I think I'd consider band class. I don't know how it is these days, but I seem to remember that it didn't exactly get you laid, but, man, what dividends. You get to learn about music, theory and all of that, and on top of that, free music lessons? In school? Oh, hell yeah. That would be the only reason to go to a high school reunion. I'd round up all the band people and say, "You know what you guys? You were right."

Here's a selection of school band songs that all have some sort of flair, starting with the Roth Junior High School Stage Band's cover of David Rose's "The Stripper". It sounds like the original should have; like every band member was drunk. Can you imagine the band teacher's thought process? "Man, these kids play like they're drunk. Oh well, we'll just add 'The Stripper' to the set list." Next up is Langley High School Band's cover of Stevie Wonder's "Uptight", played at breakneck speed. It jams. Then Goddard High brings it on, with a cover of Hendrix's "Fire", notable for the drummer who beats the living shit out the drum kit. The other two are the by the amazing Kashmere Stage Band. They just take it to a whole other level. That's them in the photo above. If you think a high school band that large would be all over the place, think again. They're tight as shit.

Aarrgh! Some neighbor is listening to something current and twee, by who knows who, recognizable because it annoys the hell out of me. And that's just from hearing it in random places. They should listen to this guy. He's current, and keeps it interesting enough, with adequate dirt. Haven't heard all of his stuff, but every time he puts out a new record it's heralded as something or other, so I do check him out from time to time. Clean record so far. I do know that it's a lot better then that war chant shit creeping through the fence. I mean, he's on our side. You old farts, that's all you gotta know. The three below are from his latest, a double album, which means nothing. Exile on Main St. was a double album, but so was Frampton Comes Alive. What the hell, just throw them in there with T Rex, Redd Kross, and Sabbath.

MEET THIS LADY

Here's a singer I couldn't find squat about online. Wanda Davis. Believe me, I tried. After hearing her cover of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" I went digging. I ran into her Facebook page and a couple more songs, and that's about it. But she's now on my radar, I will be digging further. For now, check the two cuts below, a cover of Aretha's "Save Me" from 1970 (some kind of funky drummer on that one), and the Leadbelly cover from 2003, with a guitarist that's listened to the first Creedence LP more than a few times, and some wicked, super spooky horns. It's soaked with doom. Now the hunt continues.

NO, REALLY, WE NEED THIS GUY.

I'd wager to say that most of you are very familiar with Roger Miller. He had several country crossover hits that you know like the back of your hand. Think about this, fifties and sixties music has been almost completely eliminated from radio playlists. Oldies stations are all but gone, replaced with classic rock [sic], mixed format, old school jams, stuff like that. Where would you even hear Roger Miller these days, if you had never heard of him? I guess it's almost a duty to keep the dang me ball rolling, so here you go. He's not gonns tear the house down, but I'd sure have a beer with him.

The other version of "Dang Me" down there is by Sam Hutchins, a radically different, very funky version, produced by Chips Moman. You really have to hear it, it's hardly recognizable, a total soul stomper. It's at The "B" Side, on a post about Moman. A long profile with a bunch of songs, definitely worth the visit. Hutchins's song is the first one listed (click on the song title to you-know-what).

Man, do I miss the old days. I saw a group of bikers near the beach today. Bikers, as in the old school, greasy, dirt under the fingernails, chopper variety. Filthy leather vests, boots, all the gear that used to invite shakedowns from the man. They used to be crawling all over the place. Nowadays, the only "bikers" you see around here are more likely to be straight professional types playing dress up for the weekend. It was refreshing to see the old guard. I think I may have even muttered "fuck yeah".

As serendipity would have it, once I got home I ran into the theme from "The Born Losers" at On the Flip-Side. The combination of these two events had me jonesing for a biker flick, hokey as they can be. I hit paydirt, seven old school biker flicks at YouTube, a good ten hours of don't hassle me, man fun. And, if you still want more, check the sidebar over there, there's a bunch. Apparently that's where they all ended up once the drive-ins closed down. TONIGHT! ONE NIGHT ONLY!

If you're into Drive Like Jehu, this will jack you up. That is, if you're within a few hours of San Diego. The band hasn't played in nineteen years (already?), but are reuniting for a one off performance with pipe organist Carol Williams, San Diego's official Civic Organist (yes, there is one), at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. It starts at 7:00 PM and will undoubtably be a mob scene, so plan accordingly.

The pipe organ is behemoth, one of the largest outdoor pipe organs in the world. The thing has 4,530 pipes, Having been to regular organ performances there (free every Sunday, sans rock band), I can tell you, the organ alone is worth hearing. Putting it together with Jehu is probably going to be quite a racket. Be forewarned, traffic and parking will suck.

A PINT OF OLD HARPER

American Graffiti: badass movie, badass soundtrack. Without a doubt, one of my favorite movies of all time. While it's not what you'd consider high art, if you're into late fifties and early sixties rock 'n' roll, it's hard not to elevate it a bit.  When I first watched it, I identified with the whole hanging out while not really doing anything feel of it. I identified with some of the more awkward situations, and the characters, particularly Toad, and I came to love some of the less rock 'n' roll songs on the soundtrack. Director George Lucas gave the fifties to me and my friends. The rock 'n' roll, the cars, the girls, and the style; but the most tangible gift was the soundtrack. Those sounds diluted the less than savory seventies crap that was an everyday nuisance. Think of it, you have a choice. The Doobie Brothers, or Buddy Holly? What's it gonna be? It's no fucking wonder we played the shit out of that soundtrack.

You know there's no way I was going to miss out on an opportunity to do a cheap post on a day when the Wedge was going off. APPLES AND ORANGES

This was bound to come up sooner or later. My general distaste for hokey surf related vocal songs. Not that they annoy me musically, but because they are so far removed from the real essence. (Please tell me you know what I mean.) But a whole hour of girl groups doing surf related songs? If only for the novelty, what the hell, I'll bite. But not before I watch this insanely cool footage of Linda Benson at Makaha. That's her in the photo above, same break, 1959. The footage below is from the early sixties, if I'm not mistaken. Dig the coffin at 1:10, followed by a nice head dip on the same wave. She was hot.

HOT SHIT. CAN BE HORNERY.

Oh yeahhh. I love the double whammy. Tonight I ran into two things I'd been hoping to find online for quite a while, plus I just had my mind sufficiently blown by a new song. Browsing through old posts at Likembe (a really great African music blog), I ran into one with Ginger Baker's Strativarious LP, the album with Fela on it. I mentioned it in a post about six years ago and have been on the lookout ever since. Check it out, consider that it was only a couple years after Cream disbanded. I remember when I first heard it in my teens, wondering how went from Cream to "...this?!" That was until I heard "Blood Brothers", and was sucked in. It's the least African cut on the album, an eight minute drum solo, so to speak. It's actually Baker and Ghanaian drummer Guy Warren just completely going off. My young rock brain could comprehend that.

Finding that LP would have been enough, but I also ran into Beware Mr. Baker, the documentary about Ginger Baker, in its entirety. To top it off, a new song released just a few months ago, "Why"; a jazz number that is both complex and stark. I totally dig it. It's almost like stoner no wave.

Here's a couple early Wilson Pickett cuts from his days with the Ohio Untouchables. Once you're done digging the original version of Pickett singing "I Found A Love", check "Let's Kiss and Make Up" for some seriously twisted licks. The guitar is by Robert Ward, the founder of the band and apparently king of the Magnatone amp. Three online souces cite his tone and choice of amp as being influential, and who am I to argue? I never heard of Magnatone amps until a couple hours ago. But the solo in "Let's Kiss and Make Up"? That's got me going to Robert Ward Town tonight.

The difference between Duke Ellington and your favorite band? One of then didn't put out a stinker, ever. Okay, so I'm presuming a lot. Duke Ellington may have put out a shitty record. Hell, he put out a lot, so there had to be one somewhere. But I've yet to hear one. AAHHHAAHHHH!!!

A few weeks ago I was helping a friend go through her dad's record collection. I'd never had the opportunity to meet her dad, but after going through about a third of his collection, it was apparent that he was my kinda music fiend. His collection was incredibly varied, and almost all of the albums were in really good shape, If the LP came with some sort of insert, they were there (The Isaac Hayes's "Black Moses" LP with the giant fold out cover still had a coupon to get the Isaac Hayes discount on a subscription to Ebony magazine.) A lot of them still had the shrink wrap on them. And he was a man of taste. To give you an idea, while we were going through them, we were spinning random selections, including an early King Sunny Ade, followed by Bud Shanks' soundtrack for Bruce Brown's 1959 surf film Slippery When Wet, and after that, Ronnie Hawkin's self-titled LP. Yeah, "Who Do You Love". The two gutterall screams (at :52 and 1:56) are among my favorite monosyllabic passages of all time. The outro yelp at the end is just icing on the cake.
