SONGWRITING AT 2 AM

I mentioned a while back how my uncle unknowingly turned my brothers and I onto the Ventures and surf music. He also had Santo and Johnny in his stash, which wasn't much of a leap considering his obsession with instrumental guitar bands. (To wit, he shared Duane Eddy's last name, and my Mom later told me that he would tell his classmates that he was related to him). Somehow, my brothers and I ended up with his copy of Santo and Johnny's 1961 LP Hawaii which we played incessantly (our favorite back then was "Hawaiian War Chant"). It was the first record in our collective heap that had steel guitar on it. (Try describing the coolness of that sound to your friends when their primary exposure to music is Boss Radio.)

David Lynch wishes...

Fast forward to drinking age, let me rephrase that, heavy drinking age. When you've grown past keg party age and graduated to barstool, or rather barfly. When I used to go to the bar, every night, the bar in question was Pacific Shores. An awesome bar it was, pre-mob scene, and the last few years I was a regular there, the jukebox was the best in any bar I've ever been in, particularly because it was more informed than the clientele. So you had the day crowd, largely geezers, listening to Love's "Little Red Book", and the night crowd which was younger (but still contained relatively few music geeks), listening to "Sleepwalk". Imagine that, in a bar that opened on Pearl Harbor day, and had been updated little since. That's heaven right there.

HELL YEAH OF THE WEEK

This song flat out jams: Jimmy Smith's cover of Lalo Schifrin's "Theme from Mission: Impossible". Listen to the first half minute, there's a whole lot going on. It's already pretty wild, then Smith comes in about 40 seconds, and it just takes off. Hammond, horns, bongos, this song packs it all in. This three and a half minutes will change your something or other.

LOW CAL SPECIAL

In 1969, Rainbo, a singer from New York, took exception to the cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Unfinished Music #2: Two Virgins, picturing the couple butt ass naked. So she produced what is thought to be the first white whine ever committed to vinyl. She didn't get it, so she quit singing, took up acting and went back to calling herself Sissy Spacek.

DO ME

I dig Ken Boothe and it's been a while, so here's a handful from him. But this time we turn the tables on Mr. Never Met A Song I Couldn't Cover.  But first, a couple covers by Booth; of Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime", and Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine", both solid. Then, his "Old Fashioned Way", followed by U Roy's version, "Dynamic Fashion Way". And finally, Boothe's "Artibella", followed by a cover by Robert Walters's 20th Congress, which is so damn fine that it was the reason for this Boothe-fest. And that is how you make a paragraph out of a song list.

CHEER UP SAD SACK

I'm not one for birthday posts, but a friend of mine linked to a nice video of Johnny Thunders (born July 15, 1952), and it was hard not to be a little moved. It's a video of him with three kids and I'm not sure what the story is behind it. It looks like they were going to use clips for a future music video. It was nice to see him clowning around with young bullshit detectors. One of his last recorded songs, "Kids Are People" plays intermittently in the background and at one point the kids are singing along. The song was recorded for what was to be his next album (See Sticks and Stones, linked below).

Here's just a few other songs, the last of which, a rerecorded version of "Born To Lose", was recorded with the German band Die Toten Hosen just 36 hours before he passed away. A whole lot of other Thunders related stuff has been posted here before, scroll down these posts. A lot of the links are still good.

LEFT COAST

It was a Dick Dale sorta day today. Rather than dish out the ones we've all heard a zillion times, here's a few lesser know songs. (If you're a dick head, you know these.) Did you know that Hal Blaine, Glen Campbell and Leon Russell, then in the Wrecking Crew, all played on Dale's major label debut LP, King of the Surf Guitar? It was his second LP, and his first on Capitol, so, without looking it up, my guess is that the label was throwing money into their new act. None of the songs down there are from that album. The first two are from his first LP, Surfers' Choice, self-released on Del-Tone Records. "Let's Go Trippin'" and "Miserlou" are on it too. If you're going shopping, start with that one.

COMMENCE TWITCHIN'

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Benny Joy's stuff hits me as crazed. Maybe because, if  it's not over the top, it's not for lack of trying. The echo, his enunciation, his random shouts during the solos, everything is a little over done, in a good way. All three of these have novel approach sprinkled throughout. Not to say it's not good rockabilly. On the contrary, this is my favorite type. If you're not top tier and you know it, do whatever it takes to make yourself stand out. Get bold you crazy rockabilly man.

SKITTLES

Lester Chambers, former member of the Chambers Brothers, was attacked on stage tonight, after dedicating "People Get Ready" to Trayvon Martin. His son Dylan Chambers posted on Facebook eight hours ago that he was on his way to the hospital. More about this sad event can be found here. So, crazy lady attacking a seventy year old man, I'm right here, and this is dedicated to Trayvon Martin.

THOSE OLDIE BUT GOODIES

Earlier tonight I was attempting to get through the Germs bio-pic, What We Do Is Secret, for the third or fourth time. Though, I gave up a little further into it in this viewing, it just seems too corny, like an After School Special. After I lost interest this time, I just left it on and went about my business. When I was in the kitchen, I heard "Forming" from their first 45, from the other room. If you weren't around when it came out, you'll probably think it sucks. Hell, most of the people who were around when it came out think it sucks. But when I heard it, albeit a reenactment, it might as well have been "Johnny B. Goode", for the amount of times I've heard it, and how familiar it was. And I think the song sucks. But there was a very small window of time, I think it was just weeks, when "Forming" was the only L.A. punk single out. Things like that carry with them strange attractions. I saw the Germs live back then, their second show. It was a "Kim Fowley Presents New Wave" showcase at the Whiskey. I think bands just signed up to play, I don't think there were auditions. So it was a real crap shoot. They sucked, and here I am, all these years later, and I'll be damned if that shitty song doesn't feel like Chuck Berry.

SHAKE SCRATCH BUZZ

It's Slim Harpo month over at Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban. Their first helping has a couple songs you might know...no, make that you should know. No excuses. "I'm a King Bee" and "I Got Love If You Want It", pretty elementary for most of you. Having never really looked at his chronological discography, I was not aware that those two oft covered songs were both from his first 45. From his first 45. Yeah. So go to Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban to get them. There's another down there, "Shake Your Hips". You know that one.

THE JAZZ PORTION OF OUR SHOW

Wondering what that reference was yesterday when I said that Os Incriveis' "Nao Resta Nem Ilusao" sounded like a surf band doing Mulatu Astatke? I listened to Astatke's Éthiopiques compilation again today, and, well, that description was admittedly a little far reaching. But I realized that it's been a long time since I posted anything by Astatke, so here's some of his older stuff (70's, I think). It's usually referred to as Ethio-jazz (Ethiopian jazz), and wasn't particularly well known, at least here in the states, until Jim Jarmusch used it in his 2005 film Broken Flowers. In recent years he's been messing around with the Heliocentrics, no doubt earning them all sorts of hipster and music snob bonus points. That's why I'm sticking to the early stuff. (I mean, would you listen to the Jerry Lee's Mercury stuff if there's Sun stuff you still haven't heard?)

FULLY RANDOM

Here again, the fruits of absolute random clicking. It's Os Incriveis! They're incredible! Says so right in the name of the band, which translates to The Incredible. This is the sort of stuff that breaks up the monotony of an overly curated mix. Just slap some of this next to something totally unrelated and watch the head scratching commence.

The first one, "Nao Resta Nem Ilusao" ("No Remains Not Illusion", I think) is hard to peg. It sounds like a surf band doing Mulatu Atatke. At least its got that feel. Vague as that description is, anyone who can imagine what that would sound like will probably dig this. The intro is a killer. Starts with a reverb drenched guitar, and then the beat comes in, along with the sax, about eight seconds in. If you could bottle that...

Continuing my assholery, the second song, "Nosso Trato" ("Our Tract") is either a cover of the Beach Boy's "Don't Worry Baby" simply renamed, or it's a complete rip-off. Regardless, I dig the backing, the slightly off production. Nothing like the Beach Boys. Check the solo at 1:50. there's sixteen seconds that you could well imagine as the Velvets doing surf music. The last one, "Perdi Voce" sounds like Booker T, with some Duane Eddy freak subbing for Steve Cropper. It's got a real Packy feel. I'll shut up now.

THREE HAIRY SLABS

Suppose you happen to be on someone's blog, and you spot a phrase, in bold, that reads "perhaps the most crazed garage record ever put to wax!" Whaddya do? If you're the deliberating type, it probably depends on who it is that stating something so declaratively. Me? I don't care, I'm clicking. Statements like that merit at least a listen. After I listened to the song in question the Banshees' "Project Blue", a definite keeper with requisite snotty sounding singer and an abundance of monotonous fuzz (seriously, sounds like the guy's using two strings for the whole song), I considered it crazed enough to go back and actually read the rest of the text. When they follow that statement with "Especially when we have songs like that by Australia's The Elois and Texas' The Outcasts" you know there's gonna be more clicking. Turns out the other two do indeed rival the nuttiness of the first.

A word about downloading these suckers (or anything on DivShare): While you can stream them at the hosting blog, if you want to download them, you will have to be patient. DivShare, where the files are hosted, is running kind of slow right now. But stick to it, because these songs are worth it. Once you get to DivShare (which will take about thirty seconds to load), click on the download button, wait the required fifteen seconds and when, in the past, it would prompt you to save the file right away, it might take another few seconds to happen. Everybody seems to be having problems with DivShare in recent weeks, but your stick-to-it-ness will be rewarded with three fine, and yes, sufficiently crazed fuzz laced workouts.

OLD STUFF WINS AGAIN

I don't know about you, but even though my ears have opened up to music that wouldn't get past the front door when I was younger, I gotta say, the old shit rules, plain and simple. We could go down the list of misfires by legends, later albums made when they updated their sound, whether through a natural evolution, an attempt to stay relevant to younger audiences, or just bad advice from a third party (that means you, Marshall Chess). You know what I'm talking about: Muddy Waters's Electric Mud, Bo Diddley's Black Gladiator and who could forget Howlin' Wolf's The Howlin' Wolf Album? These and others like them may be entirely listenable, but c'mon, you know as well as I do that their earlier stuff blows the pants off the shark jump stuff.

Junior Parker was one that I thought about today. His early stuff, recorded when he was still Little Junior Parker, is my kinda meat. Good solid pre-rock 'n' roll R&B. His later stuff was good, particularly when compared to other similar records from the same era. But check out any of the first three below and stand them up against the last two, recorded after well after he lost the "Little". No contest in these parts.

In my hunt for samples of Parker stuff, I ran into a couple excellent mixes (links below). Both are at Hearsay, both are twenty four songs and both are, how you say, kick ass. They're available streaming, in a single zip, or individual mp3s. I have to tip my cap, Hearsay does it right.

HOT PLATE

I don't know much about Jungle Fire. I know that there are many band members, they're from L.A., and they do afro-funk stuff that'll have you thinking Budos Band. That's fine. The world could use more bands that sound kinda like the Budos Band. That would be enough, but it says here that members  have performed or recorded with Stevie Wonder, Joe Bataan, Breakestra, Ozomatli, Quantic, Alice Russell, Celia Cruz, Orgone, and the Greyboy Allstars. That's some list isn't it? So, come on. Let's get to know these rascals.

THAT WENT BY FAST

The Oblivians have a new album out. You know what I found surprising? That it had been sixteen years since their last LP. They didn't seem they were gone that long, I suppose partly because they've kept busy. (One with solo records, one with a new band, and the third started a record label.) But, I think the big reason that I didn't really realize how long it had been, is because the whole trashy garage-cum-punk thing, that amorphic "scene" and ersatz network they played a part in, continues to thrive if you know where to look.

These guys are older now, with more shit under their belts, and they're candid about the changes that have occurred. I'd check the article at Memphis Flyer, it's a good one. A telling recent lyric, "Let's rock and roll as we get old." Roger that.

DON'T BLOW YOUR HEAD OFF TONIGHT

I don't need a calendar to know what day it is. The yahoos down the street have been blowing shit up for the better part of the day. So, yeah, hey baby, it's the fourth of July and all that jazz. For some reason, the first wholly American song that came to mind was Chuck Berry's "Promised Land". Sometimes we forget, we take Berry for granted. But, stand back for a second. Is there any doubt that he is one of the best American songwriters of all time? Regardless of genre, his lyrics, song structure, and playing are altogether seamless. Formulaic maybe, but it's his damn formula. And, at his peak, the one thing he really, really excelled at was his delivery.

LKJ IS A-OK

You might know Linton Kwesi Johnson. He's usually referred to as a dub poet. While the dub part of that description may apply to some of his stuff, the stuff I like is more just spoken word over dub-less reggae. Toasting, rapping, storytelling, reciting, narrating, testifying, Check out the video. While he's not exactly Action Man on stage, just crank it up and go about your business for an hour. You will be sucked in. His pacing, meter, or whatever you call it, is so good, really, fucking art. Even the a capella bits. You guys, this is the shit.

The first one below, "Di Anfinished Revalueshan" is a killer, and for the life of me I can't figure out why I like it so much. Admittedly, my exposure is limited to his first two LPs and a few other early cuts, so the intro to this one was a little disconcerting, being a little more polished than I expected. But when his vocals kick in, it's off to the races. His delivery, the horns, the trombone solo and the guitar fills make this a candidate for a personal song of the summer, twenty some odd years after it was released. Ordinarily I'd feel a little guilty about referring to a song by a socially conscious artist as such, so I thought I'd dig into the lyrics. After finding them online and seeing the transcribed patois, I just threw up my arms and let the song take over.
