I don't need a calendar to know what day it is. The yahoos down the street have been blowing shit up for the better part of the day. So, yeah, hey baby, it's the fourth of July and all that jazz. For some reason, the first wholly American song that came to mind was Chuck Berry's "Promised Land". Sometimes we forget, we take Berry for granted. But, stand back for a second. Is there any doubt that he is one of the best American songwriters of all time? Regardless of genre, his lyrics, song structure, and playing are altogether seamless. Formulaic maybe, but it's his damn formula. And, at his peak, the one thing he really, really excelled at was his delivery.
