NO WAVE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT

Was No Wave invented by late 70's New York hipsters, or did they just give it a name? Raw, minimalist approaches are where you find them, not sole property of some East Village miscreants with a nack for branding. Look at Les Abranis, for instance. They won the Algerian Wilaya de Bejaia Bowling Championships (hence the bearded member's shirt), leading to their big break; a chance to sing at the following years championships. Had it not been for their bowling skills, I may have wandered around my whole life thinking James White, et al, were innovators. But, of course, it led to a hunt for No Wave (fuck I hate that term) anyway, to round out the post for comparisons sake.

Now the plug: Get lost at Ponytone, the host to Les Abranis. A good kind of time suck; a blog with all sorts of off-the-wall international music and private pressings. You could spend hours there, and come away feeling like you traveled back in time, around the world, or to some two bit Omaha recording studio.. I was on there an hour, dissecting Thai pop, before happening upon Les Abranis. Really, just the record covers alone warrant a visit.
