OBSCURABILLY'S NOT DEAD

I never heard of Ric Cartey before today. I've listened to rockabilly for decades, read books and so on, and I still never heard of this guy, because rockabilly is just like other genres, surf, punk, garage, jazz, whatever. 90% of the fame and attention goes to 10% of the bands. It's probably more skewed than that, but the point is that there are an awful lot of might have beens. A lot of bands that will never be heard until they end up on some oddball compilation fifty years later. Even if their records are soaked in echo.

Oooh-Ee, Tom! Sure you haven't bumped into Ric Cartey before?

The name didn't ring any bells to me neither, but the song "Born to Love One Woman" did. Flippin' through some CD comps I first found the guy on a disc called "Desperate Rock'n'Roll vol.4". Different song though, so checkin' Discogs I see he's on the "That'll Flat Git It" vol. 1 (Bear Family), which I know I have (somewhere); his "Born To Love One Woman" counterpointing the opening track - Joe Clay's "Sixteen Chicks"...

Beleive it, I somehow missed him entirely, which is actually more encouraging than it is embarrassing. It means that there's still stuff out there for me to discover. This decidedly old dog does need some new tricks.

Aw hell, if I'm responding to a comment from someone who teaches, I ought to acknowledge that I misspelled "believe".
