RIFF BE GONE

Having a guitar riff in stuck in your head is worse than having a melody or a song stuck in your head, harder to shake anyway. If it's a good one, no matter how many times you hear it, you walk around for a day or two wondering if you've heard it in another song or not. The more it rolls around it your head, even if you know there's no link to another song, the tougher it becomes. It never becomes a cold case, as if you know someone had to have ripped it off, it's just not known yet who or when. The opening cords of the Creation's "Making Time" have been stuck in my head for the past few days and it's really starting to bug. Maybe subjecting you to it will exorcise it.

Thanks a lot for popping that into my brain! Was whistling "Makin' Time" all yesterday afternoon and couldn't get rid of it! Great song though - glad it wasn't "Painter Man".

But what's with these Led Zep dudes? Yes, there's the lifted guitar-fiddle party trick, but they're also currently in a legal dispute with Spirit over "Stairway to Heaven", and a couple years ago, I had a real WTF! moment when I heard Small Faces' "You Need Loving", which is like a blueprint for "Whole Lotta Love" (checking now, it's seemingly a double rip-off of a Willie Dixon/Muddy Waters tune called "You Need Love").

Now, I know Jimmy Page was a respected session guy in the sixties, who got credit for just about every cool guitar lick recorded in London at that time - justified or not (ask Ray Davies), but my guess is he picked up as much as he laid down. Maybe more.
